Located in a busy shopping center in Prague, this twisting and reflective sculpture depicting the head of writer Franz Kafka is the latest kinetic artwork by controversial Czech artist David Cerny. Installed in 2014, the enormous mirrored bust is comprised of 42 independently driven layers of stainless steel and weighs in at some 45 tons. The piece brilliantly reveals Kafka’s tortured personality and unrelenting self doubt that plagued him his entire life. The layering of objects is a common motif for Cerny who built a similar rotating head that also functions as a fountain titled Metalmorphosis.
This bronze statue was unveiled in December 2003. It stands next to the Spanish Synagogue in Prague's Jewish Quarter.
The statue is made by sculptor Jaroslav Rona, and is based on a vivid description that appears in Franz Kafka's early short story "Description of a Struggle." Kafka wrote of a young man riding on another man's shoulders through the streets of Prague. In Rona's work, that figure is Kafka himself sitting astride a headless man.

A few months ago, my friends The Kafkas scared the hell out of me by asking me to do some promotional shots. Now, after a few months, with “Xanadu” – their debut – almost out and “Shere Khan” – the single – pumping on your stereos (if it isn’t, then it should), I’m happy to show the results of this adventure.
