Built in the former USSR; Soviet-occupied Ukraine. Registered in the U.K. in 2009, now living on a picturesque farm in North Yorkshire.

The design looks to have originally been influenced by the that of circa 1940s Dodge Trucks of the USA - particularly the Power Wagon.

KrAZ (Ukrainian: Кременчуцький автомобільний завод, Kremenchutskyi Avtomobilnyi Zavod, Kremenchuk Automobile Plant, АвтоКрА́З or AvtoKrAZ) is a Ukrainian factory that produces trucks and other special-purpose vehicles in Kremenchuk, Ukraine; particularly heavy-duty off-road models

KrAZ-256 is a Soviet dump truck, which replaced earlier Yaaz and KrAZ-222 trucks in 1966. Everything in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which also included the automotive industry, was under the control of the Communist Party.

The vehicle became the debut postwar heavy-duty vehicle. Due to its massive size, it was almost not used in the city, but it still works in quarries, mining and oil producing enterprises. The model was produced for 11 years, after which KAMAZs moved our giant a little bit back.

Vehicle production was established in 1986, but out of the 18 vehicles that had appeared at that time, not a single copy survived to our time. However, in the automotive market there is an opportunity to find cars that were produced in the debut 11 years. The truck has a large payload, a large mass of components (as most parts were made of cast iron), as well as high cross-country ability. The whole model range is KrAZ.

The Kremenchug facility was built from the start to produce heavy-duty trucks. Initially, machine 222, which was named “Dnepr-222”, was produced during 1950s of XX century. Six years later, the KrAZ-256 was demonstrated, which acquired the best developments of the 222nd model. The truck was used at the quarries or on a large-scale construction site. The main body was a bucket-type dump truck, where there were no tailsides. Also on this platform there were made on-board modifications of the trucks, but because of some moments these vehicles were not further developed.

Over the 11 years of production, the 256th model has undergone some upgrades, but the changes have mainly concerned only the cab and hood. The main body was not changed. The machine has been recognized many times as simple and unpretentious. In addition, it is quite strong. However, it was also not very easy to operate the truck model, as it required considerable physical strength. Over these short years, the conveyor belt was able to produce many cars that had the same parameters.

Newly restored Belaz 256B 6x4 dump truck in its natural habitat at Welland Steam Rally.

These Ukranian built V8 diesel powered Kraz dumpers were imported into the UK in the mid 1970's by UMO Plant of Letchworth and badged as a Belaz - this particular lorry was one of several originally sold new to Dowsett Construction.

Taken some time ago on my Nikon F5, not easy for photography with the harshness of the constant overhead sun.

KrAZ 255 (1967-94) Engine 14,860cc YaMZ-238 V8 diesel 240hp

Registration Number 807 UXT (London)

The KrAZ-255 is a Soviet three-axle off-road truck with six-wheel drive (6 × 6), intended for extreme operations. Introduced in 1967 as a direct replacement for the KrAZ-214 (produced 1956-1967). Despite being very similar at first glance (both using the same cab, flatbed as well as the suspension), there are few major differences. Firstly, the 255 used new and much more powerful engine - the YaMZ-238 replacing the previously used and sensibly weaker YaAZ-206B which was used in 214. The 255 also featured new and more reliable transmission, the YaMZ-236N, five speed manual. It also featured new headlights (which were now, together with turn signals, located in their own housings mounted on the fenders) and, most notably, much wider tyres. Along with Ural, ZiL, Kamaz, GAZ and MAZ, the KrAZ once represented one of six models of cargo/towing trucks (in its basic version, the KrAZ-255B) used by the Soviet Armed Forces, as well as by many civilian organizations in the former Soviet Union. Since the KrAZ-255 was the heaviest (weighing 12 tons empty) and most powerful (using a 14,900 cc engine, producing 240 hp/180 kw) of all Soviet three-axle (6 × 6) military cargo trucks, it was most often used for towing heavier artillery pieces.

The KrAZ-255 ultimately evolved into a new model as its successor in 1979, the KrAZ-260, whose only difference was a new design of cab and the interiors. Despite that however, the KrAZ-260 did not replace it in production, but was actually produced alongside it up until 1994, when both were finally discontinued in favour to KrAZ-6322

This truck is an ex-Czech Army example, believed to have been used as a tank transporter
