RAF Station Kai Tak in about 1954. Accomodation blocks and admin offices border the road. Receiver station in centre foreground, runway top left and dispersal at centre top.
The beginning of the old runway was a sea wall and in October 1958 the new runway was built and due to be opened in a few days ("Cat's eyes" Cunningham would fly in a BOAC Comet 4) when a MATS DC4 caught the sea wall, damaging the undercarriage and caught fire It finished up in the middle of the runway and burnt out. No-one aboard was injured except a US Airman who broke his ankle after jumping off the wing.
Almost immediately a pair of Venoms "needed to" scramble so they were the first aircraft to use the new runway!

Remarks/comments:
In combining playful and practical, Kai-Uwe Bergmann's Copenhagen-based architecture firm BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) has created courageous and provocative architecture all around the world. Led by the idea of "hedonistic sustainability" one of their latest projects is a waste management plant doubling as a ski slope, using smoke rings as tell-tale signs to increase environmental awareness. Bergmann is a man who knows how to think BIG.
