In NZ Maori kai = food and moana = sea. This lady was gathering food at low tide when all the shell fish banks in Purakaunui Inlet were easy to reach. Just cropped and converted to B&W. Just a casual shot as I walked passed.

Thanks very much if you have time for a comment. Nice to get faves but they don't say much to me :)

The Whare Kai (literally 'food house') is a traditional Maori building for the storage of food.

In a land with no snakes and very few mammals, keeping food safe from animals wasn't as hard as in many countries but there were certainly challenges.

New Zealand had only one land mammal historically (a bat) but Maori brought rats and pigs with them when they arrived some 800-1,000 years ago. The country did have a native lizard and skinks and the food will have required protection from them as well. However, NZ is primarily a nation of birds where they have replaced mammals in many of the food niches we understand.

Food would typically have been wrapped in leaves and/or woven flax to protect it from scavengers. Because of this, many birds lost the ability to fly and became ground scavengers. Other flying species, are opportunists and would steal any food left out.

Maori across the two main islands, established a raised food storage building as the best way to protect stored foodstuffs.

Kai.

He is a puppy in training.

I took this picture, of Kai, swimming at Lake Boga, a few years ago.

It was a great day for swimming.

We had no trunks, for the Kai, and his brother, so we just let them take off their cloths, and go for a swim.

@ four, I taught Kai, at least five letters, in the alphabet, and how to count to 20. Not recite to 20, but to count every number, to twenty, the prime colors, and the names of some insects.

A wonderful kid with animals.

The enjoyment of water, was taught to me by my mother. So to teach a boy, to love water, was very amazing!

This shot, is not posed, it is a candid.

The image was taken, with my dead, PowerShot Canon G12. Although it is dead, l keep it on my shelf. It reminds me, of great times, and places visited.

Kai Iwi Beach is located 19 Km northwest of Whanganui and is becoming one of the most popular beaches in the area The beach is good for swimming, surfing and fishing .
