The Aesthetic Union
Letterpress Studio & Shop Launch Party Thursday, December 5th 2013 6 – 9pm 555 Alabama Street San Francisco, CA 94110 415 955-7485
risaculbertson@gmail.com
(San Francisco) Please join Local printmakers, James Tucker, of The Aesthetic Union, and Risa Culbertson of PapaLlama on Thursday, December 5th from 6-9pm to celebrate the opening of their new letterpress studio and shop, located at 555 Alabama Street in the San Francisco Heath Ceramics building.
The What
The Aesthetic Union is a collaborative which specializes in custom letterpress, serves as headquarters for the PapaLlama stationary line, gallery space featuring local print makers, and retail shop that celebrates the art of correspondence with handmade paper goods, vintage tools, and specialty writing products.
The Who Printmaker extraordinaire, James Tucker of the Aesthetic Union, pushes the boundaries of traditional printing methods to create specialty business cards and custom prints. James received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking at Maryland Institute College of Art. After graduation, James headed West to San Francisco where he interned and worked at a variety of letterpress, design, and bookbinding companies. He now has over 8 years of experience as a printmaker and graphic designer. Some of his employers include Hatch Show Print, Taurus Bookbindery, Austin Press, Dolphin Press, and Hello Lucky. With all of these experiences James has had a well-rounded education in the business of design and print.
PapaLlama creator Risa Culbertson, hand carves her designs using linoleum blocks, among other letterpress techniques to create untamed cards that are bold and cheeky. The line was started two years ago and can be seen in over 50 stores in the bay area. Risa received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with an emphasis on Entrepreneurship from California State University of Fullerton. Risa has worked with many small businesses for the past 13 years during which time she has also assisted with event coordination for indie craft shows and freelance design work.
The Why James and Risa share a common vision of a local and sustainable collaborative space between their two businesses in which they share resources, learn, grow, and help others. The collaborators are not only excited about their new workspace in the beautiful Heath Ceramics building, but being a part of a community of like-minded crafts people who are passionate about preserving historic arts in a modern world.
The How In June of 2013 The Heath Ceramics family reached out to James and Risa about joining the community of makers within their beautiful 18th Street building in San Francisco. An old laundry facility dating back from 1924 was completely remodeled to specifically suit The Aesthetic Union’s needs while maintaining much of it’s original industrial aesthetics, including a pair of massive furnaces from a WWI ship. Heath Ceramics is an inspiration to James and Risa because it demonstrates that a thriving business is possible to have while practicing ethical business, creating beautiful, high quality works of art, all while staying local.

These are fabrics that I have selected from my stash to use for Rachel Griffith's Synchronized Squares Quilt Along. The fabrics are actually a combination of RJR's Art nouveau collection and Art Nouveau Revisited, both now out of print. I have been hoarding these and thought its time I do something with them! I still have to chose a solid... not sure whether to go with a pale yellow, green or blue, or just a warm beige. This link will take you to Rachel's blog with instructions for the Quilt Along. Greenpeace activists joined a 15-foot tall monster in a visit to Nestlé’s headquarters in Arlington, Virginia delivering Nestlé plastic pollution gathered from streets, rivers, and beaches across the country and demanding that Nestlé take responsibility for the over 1.5 million metric tons of single-use plastic it produces annually. “It’s time for Nestlé to end its reliance on single-use plastics and move toward systems of reuse,” said Greenpeace Plastics Campaigner Kate Melges, who helped return the plastics to the company. “Nestlé has created a monster by producing endless quantities of throwaway plastics that persist in our environment for lifetimes. It’s time for the company to own its mess and stop pushing false solutions that will never solve this crisis.”

Upping her effort to combat the nation’s opioid epidemic, and joined by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill hosted a series of events across Missouri to highlight recent federal legislation she successfully shaped to open up resources to local and county Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs—and to challenge state legislators in Jefferson City to “finally get off their hands and take action to protect Missouri families.”
“It’s no mistake that Missouri ranks number-one in the rate of prescription opioids sold in the Midwest,” McCaskill said. “Every day that state legislators in Jefferson City fail to set up this kind of program, communities are going to suffer the consequences. Until those legislators decide to finally get off their hands and take action to protect Missouri families, I’ll take the opportunity to support local and county efforts to fill the gap, and am eager for the opportunity to have Secretary Vilsack hear directly from folks in my state.”
Vilsack, who is leading the Administration’s multi-pronged effort focusing on addressing opioid and heroin abuse in rural areas and communities across the country, will join McCaskill for events in St. Louis and Columbia next week. McCaskill will also hold events in southwest Missouri and Kansas City. Further details about the events will be available in the coming days.
The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act—federal legislation which provides resources to states to combat the record number of prescription drug and heroin deaths across the country—was approved by the Senate and is widely expected to be signed into law by the President this week. Given Missouri’s status as the only state without a PDMP, previous versions of the bill would likely have made Missouri ineligible to receive these federal resources.
A motion shaped by McCaskill was successfully included, which enables St. Louis County’s network of county-level PDMPs to be eligible to apply for federal resources. The language McCaskill successfully added would allow local governments in Missouri with PMDPs to apply for a new Department of Health and Human Services grant to establish, maintain, or improve their local PDMPs. Without this provision, eligibility for this federal grant funding would have been limited to states.
