Some people put these in their houses. For fun.

Or to ward off evil spirits.

Henry John Collett, known as Jack by the family, was born on 02.04.1903 at Ampney St Peter, although it was given as Ampney Crucis on his death certificate. His mother Eliza died during the birth. He joined the army on 4th September 1922 when he enlisted at Warley in the West Midlands and became Private 6003325 with the Essex Regiment. His military record states he was born at Ashbrook which was another name for Ampney St Mary, and is no longer used today. The record also states he was a labourer, the son of Ebenezer William Collett of Ashbrook near Cirencester, and was five feet six and a half inches tall, weighed 115 pounds, had a fresh complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.

During his military career, which lasted until he was discharged on 3rd September 1929, he served in East India for three week in December 1923 with the 1st Battalion followed by five years and four months in India with the 2nd Battalion. His military conduct was exemplary and he was only discharged with a disability pension when he ceased to fulfil army medical requirements. This was as a result of wounds he received whilst in action in India which left him with only one lung.

He married Violet Bridges on 03.08.1931 at Ducklington just south of Witney in Oxfordshire and according to the marriage certificate was a clothier living at Ampney St Peter. Violet was born midway between Faringdon and Witney at Langford on 28.03.1905 and at the time of the marriage was living with her shepherd father Albert Bridges and her mother Ada nee Whittock at Home Farm in Cokethorpe south of Witney. Prior to the wedding she was in service at Hatherop Castle and later took up the role of cook at Burford Cottage Hospital.

Henry later became a baker at Scott’s in the High Street at Burford. He died from a heart attack on 31.12.1975 while living at 3 Wydom Way in Burford. The death certificate records he was a retired baker.

His wife Violet passed away on 09.04.1988 at Widford midway between Burford and Asthall.

This month is the 35th anniversary of the Xth British Commonwealth Games - the "Friendly Games" as they came to be known (for our overseas friends, think the Olympic Games, but on a much smaller scale!)

I was just six years old in 1974 but so much from these Games remains vivid and clear in my minds eye. Why that should be I have no idea but it's almost like my childhood memories "kickstart" from this particular moment in time.

I clearly remember Dick Taylor running away from the rest of the field for gold in the 10,000 metres.

The legendary Graham May toppling over during the Super Heavyweight Weightlifting, the bar rolling off the stage onto the lap of Princess Anne and his wonderful classic 70s black-rimmed spectacles smashing on the ground.

John Walker and Rod Dixon vainly trying to chase down the magical Tanzanian Filbert Bayi in the 1500 metres (still - IMHO - the most memorable moment ever in New Zealand sports).

Probably most of all, however, I remember this song: Join Together

"Join Together" was the theme song for the Games and was written by a fellow called Steve Allen (real name: Allen Stephenson). "Join Together" is my favourite piece of music ever - joyous, happy, innocent, basically New Zealand how it used to be and will never be again.

I actually came to know Steve quite well when he ran a magazine shop in Napier in the mid-1990s. I whiled away many a rainy lunch hour yarning with Steve who - it turned out - was an even bigger sports nut than me.

Anyway, this very long-winded spiel is my introduction to our latest Flickr pic - yours truly in a genuine mint-condition 1974 British Commonwealth Games Officials Uniform.

I found this over Christmas and can still scarcely believe my luck. This isn't just any other piece of Commonwealth Games memorabilia - this is the "Holy Grail". The only other complete uniform I have ever seen is at Te Papa -and that was the womens' version.

I have been pondering for a little while now how best to raise this minor but notable New Zealand sporting anniversary.

It took a bit of arm-twisting but I finally persuaded my lovely wife to take some pics of me today (hair plastered down in classic 70's style bowlcut style) to post on here to share with you all as my own small but personal tribute to the greatest Games of all. Enjoy everyone!

Michael D. Dunn hosted an Old School Photo Shoot Challenge on his photography Facebook page. I saw the event notice and joined to participate. I was pretty excited about the challenge because it has been almost two years since I've shot with my 35mm film cameras. I decided to shoot both my Nikon N75 which has the additional camera grip and does auto-focus, and use my Ricoh KR-5 Super II SLR which is 100% manual with manual focus. I got good results from both cameras, I shot approximately 40 frames. I had an old roll of partially used film in my Nikon N75 which is why I took the opportunity to finally finish the remaining 15 shots in it. I shot 25 frames with my Ricoh KR-5 Super II. Shooting with my girls (my two cameras) brought back so many memories. I've had the Ricoh KR-5 Super II since 1990 and she is in excellent condition. I purchased the Nikon N75 as a replacement for the Ricoh KR-5 Super II back in 2002. I didn't start shooting with my 1st DSLR until 2010 with the Nikon D3100 which I kept for about a 3 days. I had quickly realized that the Nikon D3100 was too much of a beginner camera for me. Besides, at that time in 2010, I was craving for the D7000, but they were impossible to buy back then. I eventually settled for a used Nikon D200 which is the primary DSLR I shoot with today. I'm saving up for the Nikon D800, although I want the Nikon D4 which I'll get later time.

I spent several hours on Saturday taking photographs around downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. I had great time meeting interesting people and shooting with my first cameras again. I still have 3 rolls of color film and 1 roll if Ilford Super XP2 400 B&W film that I purchased on Saturday to shoot, so both cameras will see some action again in the future. The photo challenge was a welcome break from trying to figure what I was going to do for my Project 365 for Saturday.

All photographs are SOOC (Straight Out of the Camera), photographs were not processed with any 3rd party software or Photoshop, photographs were shot in manual mode on both cameras ISO 200 35mm film.

Completed stitched handkerchiefs & hand-written notes by craftivists for M&S board members & other VIPs to be wrapped and ribboned to hand over as gi]fts at the AGM on Tuesday 7th July 2015.

Press Release: Craftivist campaign launches after survey shows 17 percent of British shoppers would shop more often at Marks & Spencers if it paid a Living Wage

The Craftivist Collective is joining forces with ShareAction’s AGM Army this summer to press UK retailers to pay a Living Wage. The campaigners are coordinating a series of “stitch-ins” at branches of Marks & Spencers across the UK, for crafters to sew hand-made messages onto M&S handkerchiefs, to be delivered to the board, celebrity endorsers, and major shareholders of the British retail giant at its annual general meeting at Wembley Stadium on July 7th.

An online poll shows 17 percent of British shoppers would shop more often at Marks & Spencers if it paid staff a Living Wage. (Source: Opinium survey, 12th-16th June 2015, based on 2002 online interviews across the UK).

The first “stitch-in” will take place on June 22 in London at 6:30 pm outside the Marks & Spencers on Liverpool Road, N1 0PR. Another “stitch-in” is scheduled for June 23 in Cardiff, another in Brighton on June 29, and another in Milton Keynes 30th. There will also be stitch-ins in Warrington, Lincoln, and Birmingham amongst others.

The idea of the “stitch-ins” is to show M&S that in addition to major shareholders with billions of pounds under management, its core customer base is also fully engaged and supportive on the issue of the Living Wage, and that they expect the company to show leadership on this basic fairness issue.

Each unique hand-stitched hanky encourages board directors of M&S to commit to paying the Living Wage of £9.15 in London and £7.85 across the UK to all staff. This is a part of ShareAction’s campaign in partnership with Citizens UK to achieve the Living Wage across the FTSE 100 through shareholder activism. Nearly a quarter of FTSE 100 companies have now accredited with the Living Wage Foundation, but no high street retailer has yet signed up.

ShareAction has organised AGM questions on the Living Wage at more than 20 company AGMs so far this year. ShareAction is simultaneously mobilising an Investor Collaborative for the Living Wage made up of institutional shareholders with billions of pounds in British companies, including asset managers, pension funds, charity and faith investors. These large shareholders have written in 2015 to all of the FTSE 100, including M&S, in support of the Living Wage.

Crafters will be giving M&S handkerchiefs with personalised positive messages stitched into them to all 14 board members of M&S, as well as to its largest shareholders, and to the 2014 celebrities who feature in the company’s ad campaign: Annie Lennox, Emma Thompson, Alex Wek, Rita Ora, Dowreen Lawrence, Lulu Kennedy, and Rachel Khoo.

They will also be handing out 250 special handkerchief craft kits with a Living Wage message printed on them to shareholders at the company’s Annual General Meeting, so that shareholders can stitch too, to encourage themselves to support the Living Wage. These kits include an ethical hanky, needle and thread, instructions, and a briefing note on investment risk.

M&S Chief Executive Marc Bolland is paid £2.1million a year. Last year, his company refused to consider a Living Wage at its Annual General Meeting. Later, at a meeting with campaigners, the company again refused to consider paying the Living Wage.

Sarah Corbett, founder of the Craftivist Collective, said: “Marks & Spencer is supposed to be a company with solid values threaded through all that they do, which include paying your workers fairly. We’re sending the board and shareholders these carefully hand-stitched handkerchiefs to encourage the company not to ‘blow’ their chance to support life-changing decisions.”

Catherine Howarth, Chief Executive of ShareAction says: “This craftivist initiative at the M&S AGM is nothing to 'sniff at'. Sarah and her amazing stitchers are devoting hours to creating gifts the M&S board we hope will treasure and remember forever. People adore M&S but they want to see the company step up and become a Living Wage employer. The many big shareholders backing this call know it makes business sense as well as being the right thing to do.”
