Thanks a lot for inviting me to your wedding, was pretty fun. All the best for your future.

Today, federal, state, and local leaders joined JAXPORT and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Jacksonville District to celebrate the completion of the Jacksonville Harbor Deepening Project through JAXPORT’s Blount Island Marine Terminal. The project deepened 11 miles of the federal shipping channel—from the sea buoy to Blount Island—to a depth of 47 feet from its previous depth of 40 feet.

The 47-foot harbor provides the channel depth needed for larger ships to call Blount Island to and from destinations worldwide and allows existing ships calling Jacksonville to carry more cargo on board. In addition, the project includes a new turning basin allowing larger vessels to turn around at Blount Island berths.

"Florida's seaports are economic drivers for our state and serve as gateways to domestic and international markets," said Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E. "Through FDOT's strategic investments, our seaports continue to expand and modernize to meet the needs of Florida's growing economy and communities. The JAXPORT Harbor Deepening Project communicates to the world that Florida is open for business and demonstrates Florida's unwavering commitment to strengthen and grow supply chains while providing a safe, resilient, competitive, and dynamic multimodal transportation system."

“When JAXPORT began this deepening journey nearly two decades ago, the goal was to build the port of the future,” said JAXPORT Board Chair Wendy Hamilton. “With today’s completion of deepening through Blount Island—the future is here, and JAXPORT is equipped to meet the needs of the nation’s supply chain for generations to come.”

In coordination with deepening, JAXPORT completed more than $100 million in berth enhancements this month to enable the SSA Jacksonville Container Terminal (JCT) at Blount Island to simultaneously accommodate two post-Panamax container ships. In early 2023, terminal operator SSA Atlantic will welcome three new eco-friendly 100-gauge container cranes, bringing the JCT’s total to six.

“Anchored by harbor deepening, well over half a billion dollars in infrastructure improvements have been recently completed or are currently underway to improve our container capabilities at Blount Island,” said JAXPORT CEO Eric Green. “With the support of our federal, state, and local partners, JAXPORT is open for business and ready to serve the needs of our customers while creating local jobs here in our community.”

Deepening through Blount Island was completed three years ahead of the original project schedule. The total funding to date is $420 million funded through a public-private partnership between the federal government, State of Florida, City of Jacksonville, JAXPORT, and SSA Atlantic.

“This truly is a great public-private partnership,” Congressman John Rutherford said at the event. “The potential is amazing, but what I really love the most is while we’re here for the deepening ribbon-cutting, the Board and Eric are already talking about how we are going to make port operations even better. This is not the end of anything, this is really the beginning.”

“This project solidifies Northeast Florida as a top destination for worldwide commerce and shipping, with the ability to accommodate larger ships,” said Congresswoman Kat Cammack. “Florida, with her 14 ports around the state, continues to lead the way for maritime transportation and I’m grateful for the hard work and investment in this project, which will only create more opportunities to strengthen our supply chain and make the Sunshine State a top gateway to domestic and international destinations.”

The Jacksonville Harbor Deepening Project creates or protects 15,000 jobs throughout the supply chain, including trucking, warehousing, and distribution. The initial feasibility study for the project began in 2005, and construction started in February 2018.

“As with all Corps projects, this mammoth civil works effort was undertaken to upgrade the nation’s waterways and ports, to strengthen supply chains and promote economic growth while protecting the environment,” said USACE Jacksonville District Commander Col. James Booth. “As a result of this team effort, we expect Jacksonville harbor will grow and prosper as a preferred destination and point of departure for the largest, most cost-effective commercial fleets of the mid-21st century.”

"Jacksonville's economy and livelihood has always centered around the St. Johns River. JAXPORT has been a crucial driver of economic growth and investments in our city," said Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry. "The completion of this leg of a decades-in-the-making Harbor Deepening Project has required the collaboration and effort of public, private, and nonprofit spheres. It is no small feat and will kickstart the next phase of growth in our job market and investments from regional, national, and global actors."

In addition to the deepening, berth improvements, and new cranes, more than $70 million in terminal enhancements—funded by SSA and a grant from the US Maritime Administration (MARAD)— are also underway to expand container capacity at the SSA JCT. By spring of 2023, SSA will complete the first three of seven construction phases, producing approximately 31 acres of newly paved and improved operating area. The total project of approximately 93 acres will be complete by the end of 2024, allowing the SSA JCT to accommodate 500,000 TEUs (containers) annually.

“SSA would like to thank JAXPORT, the Army Corps of Engineers, and all our state and local officials for their commitment to this historic event,” said SSA Vice President of Florida Operations Frank McBride. “Forty-seven feet of water positions Jacksonville among the deepest ports on the East Coast, further enhancing the capabilities of the SSA JCT as an international cargo gateway.”

The Jacksonville Harbor Deepening Project is a 13-mile federally authorized project. The current funding model covered the completion of the first 11 miles. The final two miles are authorized and under review.

JAXPORT is Florida’s largest container port and one of the nation’s top vehicle-handling ports. Jacksonville offers two-way ship traffic, no berth or terminal congestion, and same-day access to 98 million consumers.

Cargo activity through Jacksonville’s seaport supports 138,000 jobs in Florida and $31 billion in annual economic impact for the region and state. The port continues to make infrastructure improvements in support of JAXPORT’s mission to create jobs and economic opportunity for the citizens of Northeast Florida.

Hundreds of young activists joined an inspiring Youth Climate Strike in Santa Rosa, to demand action on climate change.

This North Bay strike was organized by young climate activists Lucy London and Kelley Tillman, along with their peers at the Novato High Earth Club. They gave speeches, sang together, made posters, marched on City Hall and created a beautiful mosaic to honor mother earth.

Over a million students around the world skipped school this Friday to protest government inaction on climate change, with thousands of rallies in 125 countries, making it the largest youth climate action in history.

Their peaceful demonstration in Santa Rosa was very moving: these young people are sweet, smart, articulate, dedicated and they share an amazing creative energy and love for the earth. I want to be like them when I grow up!

Our Green Change team supported their youth action by providing a sound system, a large earth globe, and shooting videos and photos of their uprising. Thanks to our crew members Sarah Acker and Marilyn Price for their invaluable support of this important cause. :)

In coming weeks, I will create a special video story featuring Lucy, Kelley and their friends for Climate Heroes, our new series on the new leaders of the green revolution.

Even though this was a youth-led event, they welcomed the help of adult allies like us. It was a pleasure to join forces with these young leaders to fight for climate action together, across generations!

A quarter million people joined the Climate Action March around the world on Sep. 8, 2018, asking for immediate action to reduce climate change.

In San Francisco, thousands of activists created one the largest street murals ever made, covering five blocks of city streets with dozens of colorful scenes illustrating possible solutions to global warming, all around the City Hall plaza.

Each mural was designed by a different community group, and painted on the ground in large 35-feet wide circles, with washable tempera paint. Murals featured in this photo set were created by the Sierra Club ("Keep close to Nature's heart"), environmental students at UC Berkeley (“Fiat Lux”) and SFUSD (“Write History Wisely”).

Everyone was welcome to join and it was a sight to behold! Participants ranged from veteran environmentalists to young activists, with very diverse backgrounds, coming together from all across California and beyond. We used this creative art form to demand that our leaders act now to cut back on fossil fuels and switch over to renewable energy, before it’s too late.

High school students from ‘Generation: Our Climate’ participated actively in this event, and were interviewed by both KQED and KPFA. I volunteer with their group and am inspired by their knowledge and passion. I really enjoy our collaboration, which bridges the gap between generations that are too often separated into different silos.

The Climate March was also a great opportunity to reconnect with many of my activist friends, including Marilyn, Wayne and the Freedom Singers. We posed together in front of a colorful float of Mayahuel, the Aztec goddess of fertility, created by Latino activists in the wood shop of a Mission high school.

Kudos to art director David Solnit and team at 350.org for guiding the creation of these murals and many of the signs for this march -- inspiring a diverse community of citizens of all ages. Many thanks to all who marched, painted, chanted, organized and spoke up for a better world at the Climate Marches around the world. This wonderful blend of art, music and activism helped engage more people to fight for climate justice. Let there be light!

‘Resist tyranny, join a union’: Huge turnout as Hongkongers hit the streets for New Year’s Day protest

Thousands of Hongkongers took to the streets on Wednesday for the first police-approved mass protest of the new year.

The huge turnout built on a continuing a pro-democracy movement that has reached each corner of the city over the past seven months.

The march received a letter of no objection from the police, and began at around 2:40pm in Victoria Park in Causeway Bay.

The front of the march reached the endpoint at the Chater Road Pedestrian Precinct in Central just after 4pm.

In addition to the five core demands of the movement, protesters on Wednesday also called for increased union participation, supporting the victims of political reprisals, and halting a proposed pay rise for the police.

Protesters chanted slogans such as “Five demands, not one less,” as well as new additions such as “Resist tyranny, join a union.”

Those at the head of the march included some newly-elected pro-democracy district councillors – whose term in office began on January 1.

A group outside Victoria Park were rallying Hongkongers to register to vote: “We want to use our vote to tell the Hong Kong government what we want… We want the people to come out again and win at the Legislative Council election [in September],” Ms Oliver told HKFP, following the pro-democracy camp’s victory at last year District Council elections.

Though the extradition bill – which sparked the movement – was axed, demonstrators are still demanding an independent probe into police behaviour, amnesty for those arrested, universal suffrage and a halt to the characterisation of protests as “riots.”

In a statement, march organisers the Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF) called on the public to be “more united, persistent, and caring of one another” in the coming year.

“In 2020, the police have already fired the first round of tear gas,” the group wrote shortly after midnight. “Carrie Lam and police brutality turned a festive season into anguish, and perhaps we should say ‘Five demands, not one less’ instead of happy new year.”

In a statement later on Wednesday, the Front said the police had taken no responsibility for any misconduct: “They dehumanise protestors as cockroaches, demean journalists as “black reporters” and arrest medical doctors and nurses as rioters. Now, the government even attempts to increase the salaries of these rioting police.”

“We must persist this fight, for the arrested, injured and departed brothers and sisters in this movement. When victory comes, we shall gather at the dawn,” they added.

During the march, Ms Ho of the Construction Site Workers General Union said they had over 10,000 signed-up members and around 100 active members: “It is a union that already exists, but now we are recruiting more workers with the same political stance,” she said.

“We aim for three targets. The first one, we want to defend our own worker’s rights… We want to get the right to vote in the coming legislative election [as a functional constituency]… The third aim – we are trying to use construction workers’ role in this movement – for example, volunteer teams for people in need – trying to prepare for the general strike.”.....

Thousands of university, college and school students – joined by workers – are marching in London and Manchester against Tory cuts to education, fee rises and attacks on jobs and services.

The revolution in Tunisia and uprising in Egypt have clearly inspired the marches. Marchers have chanted, “Egypt, Egypt everywhere.”

London

Aisha, an FE student from Camden in north London said, “I’ve been on all the demonstrations, but some of my friends are here who haven’t been out on the protests before.

“I like the slogan ‘This is only the beginning’, because it’s going to be a long fight against this government.”

Theo, a school student from south east London, took part in the Day X walkouts last year. He said, “Lots of people who want to go to university won’t be able to and people will definitely be affected by the cuts to EMA [Education Maintenance Allowance]. The government is making the wrong people pay – the bankers are getting hundreds of thousands in bonuses.”

For workers, the student protests have been an inspiration.

A GMB rep joining the protest in London said, “I’m here to show solidarity with the students. I’ve got a daughter who has just gone through university and there is no way she would have been able to afford £9,000 a year fees.

“I’m also here to say that I don’t believe in these cuts. We’ve got to stick together workers and students. I think that the TUC demo on the 26 March can give people confidence to fight.”

UCU lecturer Vicky Margree works at the University of Brighton. She said, “We face 100 percent cut in arts and humanities funding which will hit universities hard. And the new fees will make university unaffordable for the majority of people.”

Kelly Rogers, a Unison organiser, said, “Unless we show solidarity with younger people we may as well give up. Students have led the way and enthused workers, showing us how to fight.”

Solidarity with the Egyptian uprising

In London the mood was electric as up to a thousand students joined the many hundreds of people already protesting in solidarity with the Egyptian people outside the embassy off Park Lane.

Chants of “Solidarity, solidarity,” “London and Cairo unite and fight” and “Hey ho Mubarak has to go” are ringing through the air.

One man on the original protest said, “I can’t believe that all these young people have come to support us. This makes us feel even stronger. I can’t wait to send the pictures of all you British people who have come to support us to people back home.”

Before reaching the embassy, the protest stopped outside the Tory HQ at Millbank – a focus of student anger and protests last year – as students chanted, “Tory scum, here we come.”
