Peppadew is the trademarked brand name of sweet piquanté peppers (a cultivar of Capsicum baccatum) grown in the Limpopo province of South Africa.The fruit is processed for removal of the seeds and reduction of the heat of the pepper to more pleasant levels. It is then pickled and bottled.

January of 2019 was the last month that Factory Obscura's 'Beyond' exhibit was open. Rachel and I visited on the day before the last weekend (when it was still empty).
Since then they opened a new permanent place elsewhere in OKC.
January 15, 2025, at El Ensueño, Quindío, Colombia.
Here is an Aplomado Falcon (Falco femoralis), a medium-sized falcon of the Americas. Although absent from the Amazon basin, it is widespread in a region extending from Mexico to Argentina and Chile. Nonetheless, we seldom see this bird at El Ensueño, so this is my first publishable photo of this bird taken at this location.

January 3, 2021 - today, I am remembering my late daughter, who died six years ago. Missed and loved as always, Fiona.
It had been just a few hours short of two weeks since I had been out of the house for anything, and I desperately needed to get out somewhere. After a very unwelcome snowstorm just before Christmas, my car was still covered in snow and, with a very painful shoulder (rotator cuff) and extremely painful knee, I was hoping that all the snow might just melt, revealing my filthy vehicle. That didn't happen, and the heavy, packed snow and ice were almost impossible to remove and took forever. Thankfully, there is no snow in the forecast for the coming week, so far.
The previous day, I had called in at two locations in Fish Creek Park, but didn't go for a walk at either. The parking lot at the second place was overflowing with cars and people, some in groups with no masks and no social-distancing. Sitting in my car for a few minutes, more and more cars kept streaming in. For sure, it was a Saturday (oops, no, it was a Friday!), which didn't help. Yesterday, Sunday (no, it was Saturday!), there was no way I was going to give it another try, so instead, I drove SW of the city a little way. I was so happy to find a different way to get on to the highway, both going and coming back home, so now I am free to do some of my favourite drives much more easily.
It felt good to drive along some of my favourite roads, though I left the backroads for another day, to avoid the risk of getting stuck in the snow. Passing Brown-Lowery Provincial Park, I had never seen so many cars, not just in the jam-packed parking lot, but there were about 30 cars parked on the road, too.
It was so windy yesterday afternoon, even though it was not snowing, snow was being blown across some of the roads. You can imagine what happened most times when I opened the car window to take my photos - I met with a blast of icy snow coming into my car.
The first thing I did, before driving around, was to call in at Jane's Cafe in Priddis. Luckily, there was one last tub of Chili available and I was happy to find out that the Dutch Mustard soup was once again on the menu. During these difficult times, it is so important to support local businesses and this is one of the ones that I am more than happy to help.

January 22 the new Intercity service The Hague-Breda started. Trains are run with rebuilt ICR cars, sandwiched in between 186 engines. 186-044 is ready for departure at The Hague Centraal.

The last of a month long adventure with the Pentax DA 17-70. The more I use this lens the more I fall in love with it. Color reproduction is wonderful and it is very sharp.
Our rubber band ball is not growing very fast since we stopped getting the daily newspaper.

I just found this one from one year ago,
No much sunrise/sunset here lately, mostly cloudy and rainy. Hopping for some good sunshine.
It was with great pleasure that on friday i received an email from the Take A View Landscape Photographer of the Year competition to say that one of my images has been commended and will appear in the 2013 awards book. It will also be shown at the National Theatre exhibition which runs from 7th December 2013 until the 8th February 2014.
This is the 2nd year running that i will have had an image within the awards book, which is a great feeling.
Congratulations to all my other photographer friends who have had images chosen for the book and look forward to seeing those that are going to the preview showing.

We took a brisk walk through the park, apparently we weren't the only ones with that idea; the park was actually full of outdoor enthusiasts, who after a long cold spell took the first sign of nice weather to venture outside as well. us Canadians are a funny bunch indeed.
we stopped at the frozen lake and took a shot of the reeds frozen in the thick ice. all golden yellow from the winter.

Comment from the SIDC (RWC Belgium): In the last 18 hours solar activity decreased and the last C-class flare was C1.8 flare which peaked at 13:26 UT on January 21. The Catania sunspot group 81 (NOAA AR 2628), which was source of the majority of the flaring in the last 48 hours has presently beta-gamma configuration of its photospheric magnetic field and could be the source of the C-class flares, and possibly but not very probably also source of an isolated M-class flare. No Earth directed CMEs were observed during last 24 hours.

In the United States, National Croissant Day is observed each year on January 30th. This “unofficial” holiday lets us celebrate this delicious baked bread. Croissants are buttery, crescent-shaped rolls that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The typical ingredients, for making these yummy baked rolls are flour, butter, salt, sugar, yeast and water. This rich, flaky bread can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack. They are enjoyed just as they are, straight out of the oven or maybe you might like to spread more butter on top of them. Many people like to split them open and fill them like a sandwich. A good breakfast filling could be egg and sausage while a good lunch filling might be chicken salad or egg salad. The great tasting croissant can be enjoyed anyway that you like it, anytime of the day!!
NATIONAL CROISSANT DAY HISTORY
While the origin of this unofficial National holiday are unknown it is known that the history of croissant began in Vienna, Austria in 1683. That year the Turkish Empire laid siege on Vienna, Austria. After defeat of the Turks, crescent moon shaped bread was baked to celebrate and it then became custom to serve morning coffee with the pastry.
Gold has always had a significant part to play for the Chinese New Year.
Whether it’s the physical precious metal or the colour itself, gold has played a prominent part in the celebrations. This stems from several myths and legends where gold was used to scare away demons. As well as celebrating this success, items such as gold coins or golden inscriptions have since been used to symbolise wealth and prosperity.

Manchester celebrated the year of the rabbit with the return of the Chinese New Year Dragon parade on Sunday January 22nd, 2023. The Federation of Chinese Associations of Manchester coordinate the parade each year and this time included a 175 foot Chinese dragon, as well as traditional lion and ribbon dancers, Chinese opera performers, 12 zodiac animals and ancient army characters.
