The Portal of the Booksellers, like that of the Calende, is surmounted by a third-point arch with sculpted voussure above which a gable stands out from the glazed clerestory. The rose window is surmounted by a large gable. The square towers that frame the largely hollowed-out arms of the transept, built in the 13th century, were to bear stone arrows that were never made. This portal, open on the north transept, has changed its name over time. Its first name, "portal of the Virgin", comes from the Ivory Book around 1300. It then took the name of "portal of the scholarship holders" because the dozen stalls that open onto the courtyard known today as the Booksellers were occupied in the 14th century by craftsmen practicing this trade. It finally took the name of "Portal of the Booksellers" because of the installation of the booksellers in the stalls of the court or rather because of being framed by the bookstore which designated in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance still, the library, while the booksellers were called the "libratiers", a confusion of terms would have occurred subsequently.
The tympanum of the portal develops the Last Judgement on two levels: the resurrection of the dead coming out of their tombs before the separation of the just and the damned. The upper part, which was never sculpted, was to accommodate a Christ in majesty.
The voussures are populated with angels, apostles and martyrs. The wise virgins and the foolish virgins frame the large rose window up to the base of the gable of the large portal.
The central mullion supports in a niche sheltered under a canopy a statue of Saint-Romain, recut in the 19th century.
The base consists of medallions in quatrefoils that tell the upper part of Genesis from Creation to the murder of Abel by Cain, while the lower part is composed of fabulous and fantastic characters. The choice of decorating the quatrefoils, inscribed in the recessed windows of the splays, with small scenes or grotesques, is almost unique in France; only Lyon Cathedral, the Abbey of Saint-Ouen in Rouen and the great chapel of the Palais des Papes in Avignon also have this alliance between sculpture and architecture. It is assumed that all the sculptures were painted in the 13th century, as shown by traces of colour on a statue from the upper parts of the portal.

I bought this lovely evening dress earlier this year,I have worn it once to go out in Manchester. It isnt a wedding dress but it kind of makes me feel like a bride wearing it.
The view from a gondola. If you think that white tower in the distance looks like it is leaning, you are right! Venice is plagued by unstable and sinking foundations. Combine that with rising oceans, and you have a recipe for disaster. More about this coming soon.
Just two syllables different than the recently-declared-extinct "Ivory-Billed Woodpecker," yet so very different.

The common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), or hippo, is a large, mostly herbivorous, semiaquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa, and one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae. The
name comes from the ancient Greek for "river horse".
After the elephant and rhinoceros, the common hippopotamus is the third-largest type of land mammal and the heaviest extant artiodactyl. The closest living relatives of the Hippopotamidae are cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises, etc.) from which they diverged about 55 million years ago.
Adults average 1,500 kg (3,310 lb) and 1,300 kg (2,870 lb) for males and females respectively.
Despite its stocky shape and short legs, it is capable of running 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances.
The common hippopotamus inhabits rivers, lakes and mangrove swamps, where territorial bulls preside over a stretch of river and groups of five to thirty females and young. During the day, they remain cool by staying in the water or mud; reproduction and childbirth both occur in water. They emerge at dusk to graze on grasses.
While hippopotamuses rest near each other in the water, grazing is a solitary activity and hippos are not territorial on land.
The hippopotamus is among the most dangerous animals in the world as it is highly aggressive and unpredictable. They are threatened by habitat loss and poaching for their meat and ivory canine teeth. - Source Wikipedia
This box was inspired by some Gothic ivory carvings I saw at The Cloisters in NYC this August. The box ended up a lot more Baroque though.
