It had been grey, miserable and raining all day. It was getting dark when my wife shouted excitedly to come quickly as a sparrowhawk had landed on a neighbours wall. I didn't think it was worth attempting to take any photos, but decided to give it a go anyway using my flash. The images are a little grainy due to the high iso and the fact it was getting dark, but nonetheless i'm pleased with the results.

Castletown is dominated by the medieval Castle Rushen, one of the best preserved medieval castles in Europe and ancient home of the Kings and later Lords of Mann. Tynwald, the Manx Government, was based in Castle Rushen by the 1500s and Castletown was the Island's capital until Tynwald moved to Douglas during the 1860s and 1870s.

Stashoon traenagh Valley Chashtal - Castletown Railway Station. "Caledonia" and Hutchinson meet again - exchanging tokens at Castletown on Sunday 13th July. a two-train service is in operation, and "Caledonia" is in charge of the 14.20 Douglas-Port Erin whilst no. 12 "Hutchinson" heads up the 14.35 Port Erin-Douglas train.
"Caledonia" is nominally no. 15 in the IMR fleet, but began its life as Manx Northern Railway no. 4, being built in 1885 specifically for the steeply-graded St John's - Foxdale line which the MNR operated under lease from the outset. The MNR was taken over by the Isle of Man railway in 1905. In 2007 "Caledonia" was returned to her original MNR condition, including fleet number. No. 12 "Hutchinson" was built for the IMR in 1908.
The headboard being carried by "Hutchinson" denotes that it is "Manx National Week" - this is the week during which Laa Tinvall, or Tynwald Day, is commemorated. As the oldest continual Parliament in the world the rituals of Tynwald Day are hugely significant to the Isle of Man and the day is observed as a National Holiday - usually on 5th July, except when the date falls on a Saturday or Sunday it is observed on the following Monday.

The Isle of Man Railway was established in 1870 and opened two 3'-gauge lines to Peel (opened 1st July 1873) and Port Erin (2nd August 1874).
The Manx Northern Railway opened its line from St John's to Ramsey in 1879. It also operated the nominally-independent Foxdale Railway, transporting its mineral traffic on to Ramsey for export to the UK. The MNR suffered with the opening of the Manx Electric Railway to Ramsey in 1899 and was acquired by the Isle of Man Railway in 1905.
Regular operation ceased in 1966, and although a seasonal service was operated in 1967 and 1968 the Peel and Ramsey Lines subsequently closed (the lightly-used Foxdale line had fizzled out in the 1950s). The Port Erin Line however has survived and has been operated ever since as a heritage steam railway.
The chapel is on St Michael's Island which is connected to Langness via a causeway.

This stone circle is located at "the Chasms" on the South of the Isle of Man just outside of Port St Mary. Not much is known about the stone circle at all.
On the facing headland you will see some bits that look like giant steps cut out of the rock. This is where stone gateposts were cut out for use all across the island.
This group of photos were taken on the Isle of Man on the 17th of September 1971. I'm sorry I don't know more about them than that so if anyone can supply details of location etc please feel free to do so.
A nice place to end the walk - chance to make a cuppa (tea for us) in return for a donation, St Luke's Church

"Built on the site of an old keeil, St Luke's Church sits in the centre of the Manx countryside in the Baldwin Valley and is possibly the most isolated church but also in one of the most perfect settings on the island......."
