For me, the Mines Tavern at Laxey vies for the title of ‘best beer garden in the world’. Especially when the Manx Pale Ale is on.

We had explored Summerhill Glen on one of the evenings; and as we had time to fill on our last morning we decided to explore in the light.

Summerhill Glen has two entrances. The top entrance is at the top of Victoria Road, and the main entrance is on Summerhill. On the evening walk we used the main entrance and went up the glen, on this explore we had done a loop walk and started from the entrance in Victoria Road.

In the 1980's a fairy grotto was created near to the top end of the glen and this is still popular today, this is one of the more recent additions.

From the inscription plaque

This memorial commemorates the men and women of the Merchant Navy who sacrificed their lives for our future during Operation Dynamo. TSS Mona's Queen III was one of three Isle of Man Steam Packet Company vessels lost during the Evacuation of Dunkirk. Her anchor was recovered from the seabed off Dunkirk on 29th May 2010, to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of her sinking. Dedicated on 29th May 2012.

"Port St Mary residents are proud to act as custodians to this memorial. Information boards at the site explain the vital contribution of the Isle of Man to the Dunkirk evacuations, and the men who were lost are commemorated on the walls of the memorial."

I had not know that the Isle of Man Ferries had been involved in the Dunkirk rescues, and that so many had lost their lives. The memorial is well worth a visit if you are nearby.
