Yeah, it's hard to believe, I know. What can I say? Truth is stranger than fiction.

Although downtown Portland, Maine is not historic, 2-foot territory, there are some distinct advantages to this location for the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Museum. Unlike most Maine railroads, this one is definitely not a tree-tunnel. Although only 1.3 miles long, this line is quite scenic, with beautiful views of Portland's harbor, and on hot summer days, the passengers enjoy cool breezes as well. In this frame, the former Bridgton & Saco River #7, a 33-ton, 2-4-4T built in 1913, takes her passenger consist railroad east toward the Cutter Street Crossing, perhaps a quarter mile ahead.

The Rauma is a river that runs through Romsdalen, a valley in Møre og Romsdal and Oppland counties in Norway. It runs for 68 kilometres (42 mi) from Lesjaskogsvatnet, a lake in the municipality of Lesja, to the town of Åndalsnes in the municipality of Rauma. The river was once famous for its salmon-fishing, but since an infection with Gyrodactylus salaris only 5 to 10% of the original stock survives. The salmon runs up to the Slettafoss, a 16-metre (52 ft) high combination of waterfalls and rapids more than 42 kilometres (26 mi) upriver from the estuary. Wikipedia

"Capsula Mundi is a cultural and broad-based project, which envisions a different approach to the way we think about death. It's an egg-shaped pod, an ancient and perfect form, made of biodegradable material, where our departed loved ones are placed for burial. Ashes will be held in small egg-shaped biodegradable urns while bodies will be laid down in a fetal position in larger pods. The Capsula will then be buried as a seed in the earth. A tree, chosen in life by the deceased, will be planted on top of it and serve as a memorial for the departed and as a legacy for posterity and the future of our planet. Family and friends will continue to care for the tree as it grows. Cemeteries will acquire a new look and, instead of the cold grey landscape we see today, they will grow into vibrant woodlands."

Mizoram is a picturesque destination for the perceptive visitor with its wide display of dances & festivals, handlooms and handicrafts, flora and fauna, breathtaking natural beauty and temperate climate. The general belief is that the Mizos migrated from China about three hundred years ago, in search of new territory and settled in these remote hills which were earlier known as Lushai Hills.

The term ‘Mizo’ is deriving from two words- ‘Mi’ means man and ‘Zo’ means hills. Today Mizoram consist of a population of over five Lakh who identify themselves as ‘Mizo’.

The Mizos are friendly and hospitable.

The people are simple, happy, carefree, contented, generous and freedom-loving.

Music plays a key role in uniting and strengthening the bond between the Mizo people. The joyful enthusiasm and companionable spirits of the common people have truly made them the real songbirds of this exotic hill station.

My entry for Bio-Cup round 1

Theme: Nature

Sub-theme: Echinoderms and Porifera

I initially wanted to make Patrick but I didn't have any magenta pieces. Then looking up starfishes, I learned some of them are prone to eat other individuals of their own species, along with sea sponges... hence this rather macabre MOC.

You can find more pictures on my feed, along with the nano versions of bob's house.

This is my proof and what I look forward to every year..the mustard bloom. As soon as the wild mustard explodes with that yellow everyone around here knows that Spring is not far in the future. It is so beautiful to see this.

So, of course, I took a drive around and snapped about 100 shots of blooming mustard this morning. Of course I did! LOL

Hastings is the oldest surviving standard gauge locomotive built by Hunslet (459, 1888). Built for the contractor building the Manchester Ship Canal the engine led a nomadic life around England including helping with the construction of Brookland Motor-racing track (where my Grandfather worked for the Aviation industry). Preserved on the Kent & East Sussex railway in the 1960's the engine later underwent some restoration in Essex and was then finally completed by Statfold Engineering a few weeks before this open day. She is privately owned and was seen here exercising past Strawberry Fields platform.

What is it about being a girl I love so much?

I don't love guys--in fact, I barely tolerate them.

But I love the feminine appearance, which (of course) I try to emulate.

You don't have to like this. I'm just so tired from my awesome day today. We had a half day and I went out to lunch with a bunch of friends, and then we ventured around for awhile, went to my sister's field hockey game and now I feel dead. I have a full day tomorrow.. :/

Some photographer somewhere said something about photography not being reality. I have always thought he was on the money with that. My work, by it's very nature is not reality. It was never meant to be. Sure, it may appear to be sometimes, but the images are cleaned up, touched up, doctored. Not real.

This is me. This is reality. I have an artist's soul, and the voice of a crow. I'd love to sing, to play music, but I have none of it in me. Often, I feel like I have the visual voice of a crow as well. I used to write. A lot. Incessantly. I blogged. Not about photography, but about effective self defense. I gave that up when I picked up a camera again.

Strange, isn't it? A photographer with an artist's soul writing about self defense. There's a reason for that. I was once a pretty decent fighter. Like most fighters, I learned the hard way, getting my ass beat. I never stopped fighting though, and I learned. Then, I gave up my knees to Uncle Sugar's Yacht Club. I am now in constant pain, I can't kick, and I damned sure can't run fast, long, or far. About the only time I am not in pain is when my mind is somewhere else right-braining it away on photography. I can't fight effectively anymore. So I carry a weapon. Everywhere. I do so because as a fighter, I've learned I will probably never see the attack coming. I don't want to avoid people I don't know, so I carry the means to preserve my life if need be. That's reality.

Winter is very dark for me. As the days get shorter, my mood gets more morose. And my knees hurt like a bitch. I watch Zack's film, Transform over and again, and I try to forge on. I get a lot of inspiration from my flickr friends. You may not realize it, but I do. Sometimes I think you are my truest friends. Tonight, I was devoid of inspiration, ready to hang up this 365 project again. Then I commented on Stacie's image. I ended my comment with "It's real." Yeah, that's what I want to do tonight, that's what I need, so this is real.

I hurt. I am on the tail end of a 72 hour call rotation that has whipped my ass. I have spent most of the weekend, it seems, at the hospital. Patching up people who refuse to take care of themselves, and they will be back again. I've listened to people claim to be medically disabled for miniscule ailiments while others lie comatose and bleeding in the next room. All the while wondering if I would meet the criteria for disability myself because I can hardly stand and my knees throb up and down my spine. My back hurts from trying to restrain people who are fighting against those who are trying to save their lives. A few days ago, I commented in depth on Viewminder's photo about what we sometimes go through as practitioners. It is a small glimpse. Sometimes I think nobody but a nurse can understand what we go through as nurses. This weekend I have been cursed, hit, scratched, spit on, pissed on, shit on, had stomach contents sprayed across my face, had blood sprayed all over me, and I'll go back for more tonight at 2:00 AM if needed. I'll certainly be back for more at 6:00 AM. That's my reality. Nobody really understands it until they experience it themselves.

Why do I do this? Why? Because I've also had tears on me. The comfort we provide as nurses erases the blood, the puke, the piss and the bruises. At least it does for the nurse. I also do this for my family. That's reality. I do a damned nasty job that few want to do, so my family can stay fed. So we can stay warm in winter, cool in the summer, and not live under a bridge. That's reality.

I started doing another 365 project this year with my daughter, for my daughter. I thought, against my better judgement, that it might work, that it would give us more time together. Several years ago I bought her a camera and taught her about photography to bring us together. Our joint 365 lasted a total of four days before she was off to other things and I was uninspired. Yet I have forged on with it, in case she wants to rejoin me. I don't know if she will, but I'm taking daily pictures of myself no matter how uninspired I might be, in case she does. At the end of my last 365 project, I stated that I felt the thing was a pointless exercise. It was for me at least. Her involvement gave me reason to do it again. I'm a father, and I will not give up on her. No matter how much infectious blood soaks through my paper surgical cap and mixes with the sweat running down my back, no matter how much the gangrenous pus filled crap in my hands turns my stomach, and no matter how much my knees throb. That's reality.

Tonight I was uninspired. Dead tired. Foul. Ready to throw in the towel. Then I went online to see my flickr friends. They say this isn't reality. What the Hell do they know? Tonight you inspired me, kept me going when I was at my lowest. I got my tired ass up, put on my Chucks, tossed fresh scrubs in the Jeep in case my pager went off, and I drove to the studio to capture this image. I had pre-concieved it in my mind, and I recorded these words on my dictaphone on the way there and back. If you inspire me so, how can you not be reality? Know what? I'll probably leave the typos in here too, because I have big-assed fingers and I only type with one of them. That's reality.

Plus, my wife just came in, and I want to get to spend a bit of time with her this weekend. I miss her. That's reality too. Photography isn't reality. At most, it's a picture of what used to be. Not what is. It can't depict what is real, but perhaps it can make us recall a feeling that was. But this is my reality, this is me. No. This was my reality. This is me.

... Humans are caught—in their lives, in their thoughts, in their hungers and ambitions, in their avarice and cruelty, and in their kindness and generosity too—in a net of good and evil. . . . There is no other story. A man, after he has brushed off the dust and chips of his life, will have left only the hard, clean questions: Was it good or was it evil? Have I done well—or ill?"

You have to check out Serena's stream if you haven't done so far. As you all might know I am not a big fan of pet shots but she is amazing. She does mainly pictures of her dogs that are clever, hilarious and so well done. The post processing is the cherry on top. I am a huge fan of her work. I went through her whole stream today and it took me ages to decide for only 9 shots cause all of them are amazing. She also does rocking portraits. Serena surely is one of the most creative and funny people I have met on Flickr.

Spinalonga (Greek: Σπιναλόγκα) is an island located in the Gulf of Elounda in north-eastern Crete, in Lasithi, next to the town of Plaka. The island is further assigned to the area of Kalydon. It is near the Spinalonga peninsula ("large Spinalonga") – which often causes confusion as the same name is used for both. The official Greek name of the island today is Kalydon.

According to Venetian documents, the name of the island originated in the Greek expression στην Ελούντα stin Elounda (meaning "to Elounda"). The Venetians could not understand the expression so they familiarized it using their own language, and called it spina "thorn" longa "long", an expression that was also maintained by the locals. The Venetians were inspired for this expression by the name of an island near Venice called by the same name and which is known today as the island of Giudecca.

The island was subsequently used as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957. The last inhabitant, a priest, did not leave the island till 1962, in order to maintain the Greek Orthodox tradition of commemorating a buried person 40 days, 6 months, 1 year, 3 years, and 5 years after their death. There were two entrances to Spinalonga, one being the lepers entrance, a tunnel known as "Dante's Gate". This was so named because the patients did not know what was going to happen to them once they arrived. However, once on the island they received food, water, medical attention and social security payments. Previously, such amenities had been unavailable to Crete's leprosy patients, as they mostly lived in the area's caves, away from civilization.

After the leper colony was dissolved, Spinalonga sank into oblivion; interest in it was revived by the work of people like Maurice Born.

Spinalonga was one of the last active leper colonies in Europe; others that have survived Spinalonga include Tichileşti in eastern Romania, Fontilles in Spain and Talsi in Latvia. As of 2002, few lazarettos remain in Europe.

Today, the uninhabited island is a popular tourist attraction in Crete. In addition to the abandoned leper colony and the fortress, Spinalonga is known for its small pebble beaches and shallow waters. The island can easily be accessed from Plaka, Elounda and Agios Nikolaos. Tourist boats depart from all three towns on a daily basis (every 30 minutes from Elounda). Since there is no accommodation on Spinalonga, the tours last only a few hours.

Spinalonga is under consideration to become a World Heritage Site.

This camera will always hold a special place for me. It was a gift from the parents of my last exchange student. It had been the mother's grandfather's camera. He had given it to the mom before she went on her own adventure as a youth to China. She had stopped using it and, upon seeing the vintage camera collection that I have been assembling when they visited us for Christmas two years ago, they shipped this to me from Denmark on their return home.

In an unrelated note, I am almost feeling myself again this morning and I have a burning imagination full of ideas for my next series that I want to start working on today. All of this is just in time, as my brother-in-law, his wife and our niece will be arriving tomorrow morning for a visit! It has been a year since we last saw them all; so we are very excited!

This is the final video (which you can watch here: youtu.be/n-ttuRpVqjo) part of last week's outing, a stroll around M&S at Bluewater in those lovely seamed stockings. I did, though, change my skirt for one slightly longer for this walk.

India is still under a huge pall of Covid 19 pandemic with the highest death and infection fevers. People are not dying so much because of the disease but because of lack of facilities and non vaccination of the populace. Democracy skews sometimes and brings forth leaders who are popular but are totaly unfit to think rationally.

Continuing this series on the Elephant at Work in one of the Saw Mills in Fort Kochi.

The tiny shifts and maneuvers that the elephant makes to move such heavy loads is a case in point in this series. The deft way with which the trunk is being used to pull the tree can be seen here. Not much body effort either.

The elephant is a gentle giant and has been to a certain extent used extensively in Kerala for ceremonial parades for Hindu temples.

The non temple elephants also work on per hour basis in timber yards moving tree trunks, stacking and unstacking.

Other than that elephants used to be the bulwark of the armies of the Indian kings as they fought off the invasions coming from the Khyber Pass into the rich fertile plains of India. That worked for some time but then the horses and guns changed that.

is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants growing from bulbs, all with large and often prominent flowers. Lilies are a group of flowering plants which are important in culture and literature in much of the world. Most species are native to the Northern Hemisphere and their range is temperate climates and extends into the subtropics. Many other plants have "lily" in their common names, but do not belong to the same genus and are therefore not true lilies. True lilies are known to be highly toxic to cats.[4]

Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. Indigenous Australians have inhabited the Sydney area for at least 30,000 years, and thousands of engravings remain throughout the region, making it one of the richest in Australia in terms of Aboriginal archaeological sites. During his first Pacific voyage in 1770, Lieutenant James Cook and his crew became the first Europeans to chart the eastern coast of Australia, making landfall at Botany Bay and inspiring British interest in the area. In 1788, the First Fleet of convicts, led by Arthur Phillip, founded Sydney as a British penal colony, the first European settlement in Australia. Phillip named the city Sydney in recognition of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney.
