LIMNI - ΛΙΜΝΗ (December 21, 2014)
Limni, on the island of Evia, is a small port, beach and tourist resort, which is beautiful the whole year round. It is located 80 km NW of Chalkida and about 150 km from Athens.
The island of Evia lies along the Eastern coast of Central Greece, and is accessible to the mainland via two bridges, an old wooden bridge and a contemporary suspension bridge. There are also frequent ferries to several parts of the island. It is 175 km long and is the second largest island in Greece, and the third largest in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Taken on the weekend of December 20-21, 2014 while my English wife Theresa Jane Brown and I were visiting friends.

On monday 11 December Amsterdam is covered in a coat of fresh snow. The snow fell in sudden flurries and gusts and turned the world white and wonderful. With the canals in the city and occasional high winds, there can be a nip in the air, but packing gloves and a scarf should keep you warm enough. There is something very beautiful about Amsterdam in the winter. It does occasionally snow in Amsterdam in February, but that almost always means just a light dusting. I walk in my neighbourhood and made some photos of the snow. When it snows the light and atmosphere is really beautiful. The steep bridges over the canals in Amsterdam are really slippery, especially for cars. The best way to travel in the snow is by bicycle, tram, walking or better by sleds. Who knows times of Hendrick Avercamp are coming back this year. Avercamp was the first Dutch artist to specialize in paintings of winter landscapes featuring people enjoying the ice. Some 400 years on, our image of life in the harsh winters of the Golden Age is still dominated by Avercamp’s ice scenes with their splendid narrative details of couples skating, children pelting each other with snowballs and unwary individuals falling through the ice.
This monday afternoon I walk in my neighbourhood and made some beautiful photos of the snow. The virgin white carpet of snow is crunching under my shoes. I began to remember why I love the winters so much. This time around, the canals remained relatively ice-free and there was lots of snow. Photo taken at the Oudezijds Voorburgwal of The Bulldog which is an Amsterdam-based company that operates a chain of cannabis coffee shops. Above shop was the 1st Coffeeshop since 1974 in Amsterdam: The Bulldog Nr.90. It's still a magnet for backpackers and tourists selling weed and hash. KNMI released today its “Code Red” alert for heavy snowfall and extremely slippery roads. Heavy snowfall is expected to continue at least until the late evening hours.
my mother is the most intriguing, breathtaking, awe-inspiring, and most curious person i have ever gotten a chance to know.
yesterday evening, she did something that hurt me a lot, and the worst part was that i knew she knew it was killing me as she did it.
but, as i expected (this is not the first time...oh it is not the first time this has happened), at four o'clock in the morning last night, she clammered into my bed and as she wrapped her arms around me, she cried and cried.
she told me how incredibly sorry she was.
she wept for what she did and she wept for all she has done as a mother of nine children.
she told me she was so painfully sorry she didn't know me. inside and out.
of course, most everything she said is a blur to me now.
i was half asleep as she hugged me so it feels like one of many dreams, but as i woke up four hours later, this one phrase was slamming against my ears:
"Kalie, I don't even know what makes your heart soar."
and i just stopped, and i thought to myself, do i even know what makes my heart soar?
this picture happened 15 minutes later.

It is a miserable day here and as outside activities have been rained off. Zara offered to pose for a photograph with one of her larger 'rope' balls. We buy rope balls in bulk because as you can see, they are very soon frayed and shredded.
The first job with any new rope ball is to cut through one of the rope strands and then after that, it is easy to shred the ball and destroy it! Sometimes they will last three or four weeks and sometimes only a couple of days, depending upon the size of the ball. A happy dog is one with rope strands strewn all over the lounge carpet!!!
October 11th is National Coming Out Day. I usually don't get all sentimental about things like this, but I actually came out to most people in my life on this day in 1992.
Today you would have to be headless to not know that I'm a big Mo. Since I don't really have anyone in my life that doesn't know, I'm coming out to you guys on Flickr.
Even though most of you probably know already, but that's beside the point.
So, if you have anyone in your life that is gay and might be having a rough time of it, give them a call today and tell them you're glad to have them in your life. A niece or nephew. A coworker. A cousin. An old friend who never had the courage to tell you, even though you already know.
If your gay, tell someone who might not know. Personal relationships are the best way to make people change their minds about how they feel. If your family doesn't know, tell them. If a friend doesn't know, tell them.
Closets are for clothes!!!
God, I wish I had a Don't Panic shirt to put on right now.
Well that is a pleasant sight! For Donald Trump's visit brings a lot of awesome things!!
All of this is part of the commemorations of the D-Day, on June 6th, 1944. Here are seen 3 US Army Black Hawks taking-off for a reco flight over Normandy's beaches. These helicopters are stationned for the week in Carentan's horse racecourse. What a moment it was!
Hello my Flickr friends!!!
Today is an amazing yellow day at Color my World Daily and at *ღღ* Cosas de casa *ღღ* we celebrate books !
Yellow Lady always wanted to learn how to knit but she never had time to do so…But since the beginning of social distancing and her quarantine, Yellow Lady has all the time she wanted to learn! Her friend Mr.Teddy Bear, told her that it was a perfect time to self-reflect and to learn something in our lives (that is what he did yesterday …) ! She decided to start today and since it is a yellow day, why not climb a lemon and bring all the necessary to knit. First: the tiny scissors…. She climbed up, put the scissors in place and got down…Then the basket of wool…. second time climbing…. Second time going down….Then the wool… yes I know she should have put the wool in the basket and take everything at once but she didn’t though ahead so she had to climb the ladder for the third time…Then the needles… fourth climb of the ladder… then fourth time going down… She forgot her precious purse while climbing with the needles, so the fifth climb was to get her purse…
At the top of her lemon for the 5th time, Yellow Lady was exhausted… Then she realized that her book on How to knit was all the way down, at the bottom of the ladder… She was about to have a nervous breakdown… Yes, I know climbing a ladder 5 times isn’t that hard but keep in mind that she spent two weeks in quarantine doing absolutely nothing and now she was social distancing from every known activities… Yellow Lady was a little bit rusty and she did put some extra weight for sure….so ladder climbing was truly painful… How was she supposed to learn how to knit when she did not have her book … and of course, no internet connection on the top of the lemon, so no YouTube tutorials…
That is it ! she had enough. She decided not to go back for her book. She will just stay at the top of her lemon, with all her knitting supplies, watching birds fly by and trying to see some recognizable shapes in the clouds…She had her purse with a bottle of sherry, her tiny glass was at home but since there was no one around she could drink straight from the bottle (social distancing has its positive sides also, you don’t need to be a “lady” all the time)... thinking about all the magnificent scarfs she will knit one day for her friends. Yellow Lady was enjoying her social distancing time, just doing nothing…and that is ok also! Learning about yourself is even better than learning how to knit…
Ok, now I really have to run to my office (dining room), I have a conference call in 1 minute and I don’t know if I will be able to make it !!! I’m almost late and I’m as rusty as Yellow Lady sitting all day, doing nothing ;-) !!!
Thank you so much for all your lovely comments / favs/ general support / happy thoughts / positive vibes!! It is truly appreciated! Have a great day and see you soon!!

Hwy 149 is how you access this marvelous view, located between Lake City and Creede Colorado.
Looking to the WSW, South Clear creek runs as far as the eye can see into this valley. Down this valleyee one finds (more or less in order): Troutvale Reservoir, Brown Lakes, 3 separately named "Hermit" reservoirs, a Hermit Lake and in the far distance is Simpson Mtn (14 miles from the camera).
Were you to continue in the direction the camera is pointed past the Simpson mountain, a significant waypoint would be Shiprock NM. (SE of the 4 Corners area; a mere 111 miles further on.)

i was buying these buttons with my mum today and the woman had a bit of a puzzled look on her face, cause i was going "and i'd like 3 of these, and 2 of those and only one of those" so my mum said they were for my face and completely embarressed me.
also, i think i've completely freaked my brother's girlfriend out!! she was in the house whilst I was walking around with a button face.
fun times :)

This is a panoramic drone photo of a haboob as it passed over the Franklin Mountains in El Paso, Texas. This haboob was generated by severe storms more than 100 miles to our east and it hit us with no warning. I just happened to spot it as it began to pour over the mountains and I was able to quickly get my drone airborne to capture the scene. We were blanketed by this dust cloud just a few minutes later.

This is a 3 mile walking, biking, skating, running, etc. trail named Shortline Trail in Tallulah Gorge State Park in Tallulah Falls, Georgia. This is located in northeast Georgia. This is my FAVORITE trail to walk year round. It is always about 20 degrees cooler on this path than anywhere else in the area. For this reason it is a good place to get your exercise in the summer.
This trail is located on the bed of an old railroad track. It is a part of the rails-to-trails program here in Georgia.
There is quite a difference in winter versus the warm months in observing the eating habits of pheasants. In the summer time unless you are out very early in the mornings or happen to catch them searching for bits of gravel to serve as grit to help their digestion, pheasants often are more hidden as they seek things to eat. They normally have a menu with more entries on it than they do during the winter.
The phrase “scratching out a living” goes all the way back to the 14th-15th centuries when in the older farming communities the farmers “scratched” the land using more primitive tools.
By the 18th-19th centuries, the use of the phrase gained uses beyond that of farming to include anyone who was barely making ends meet in their day to day struggle.
Jump ahead until today and the phrase applies to a broad spectrum of normally physically hard, low paying jobs or an unstable work life.
I grew up in an era when there were only a few government help agencies and can well remember my folks talking about people around them during the Depression and beyond who spent many years on community “poor farms”.
Poor farms were quite prevalent at one time in the US and folks who were unable to work due to age, disability or other factors were housed and fed in exchange for helping to produce food and maintain a farm. Local governments ran the farms as they were considered a cost-effective way to care for the needy rather than simply doling out monies to individuals.
It carried negative connotations for participants, particularly because they were labeled “inmates.”
Poor farms gradually petered out by the middle of last century with many in Minnesota closing in the 1930s due to government programs starting up such as Social Security in 1935 and the growing prevalence of nursing homes.

Chipping Campden is a small market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its elegant terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. ("Chipping" is from Old English cēping, "a market, a market-place"; the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury.

Booby's Bay is a small cove in north Cornwall, just south of Trevose Head and north of the beautiful sandy beach at Constantine Bay. Booby's Bay is a fantastic place to go rock pooling, with its rocky backdrop creating lots of pools to explore. Swimming and surfing at Booby's Bay can be quite dangerous due to the amount of rocks in the area, so extreme caution is advised, with neighbouring Constantine Bay being a safer choice, especially during summer months when lifeguards are on duty.
At high tide, the beach at Booby's Bay pretty much disappears, and at low tide the remains of a few ship wrecks can be seen in the sand. The bay takes its intriguing name from the 'Booby' seabird which can be found in the area, a close relative of the 'Gannet'.
Since my last post , I've been receiving tons of emails from people owning one or more cut heads, asking me how to better take care of them and make them happy. Well, I'm sorry I couldn't reply to everyone individually and I'm not an expert myself, but here are some basic rules to follow:
#1 conserve the head in a dry place away from direct sunlight (to avoid degradation)
#2 make sure the head always wears sunglasses (even if exposed only to artificial light)
#3 never feed the head (not even when it complains)
#4 make sure the head is heavily exposed to at least four hours of television and/or pop music on a daily basis (to avoid consciousness)
#5 hire someone metaphysical but funny to babysit the head on Saturday nights and take it out for a drink (but remember that the head must drink responsibly)
[This image shows you how to apply rules #2 and #5, if you guys want the full tutorial, just drop me a line. Hope that helps.]

This is the bracelet my mother wore in the hospital when I was born. Her first initial (Mercedes) and last name on glass beads. I would have worn a matching one with the same information. I have the one she wore when my brother was born nine years earlier too. This shoe used to have a bell tied to it. For years she put little bells on my shoes as seen in the photo below and I did the same with my son. It makes it easy to know right where an active toddler is. My mom has been gone for 33 years now. How I wish I could spend just one more Mother's Day with her.

" I tried to find what Order is. I was excited about it, and I wrote many, many words of what Order is. Every time I wrote something, I felt it wasn't quite enough. If I had covered, say, two thousand pages with just words of what Order is, I would not be satisfied with this statement. And then I stopped by not saying what it is, just saying, "Order is." And somehow I wasn't sure if was complete until I asked somebody, ad the person I asked said, "You must stop right there. It's marvelous; just stop there, saying, 'Order is.' "

Milldale is a hamlet on the Staffordshire bank of the River Dove as it flows through Dovedale in the Peak District National Park. It is a "picture postcard" village which attracts many visitors particularly in summer. Viator's Bridge is am ancient packhorse bridge over the River Dove and is often photographed as are the stone cottages and the red phone box at the foot of Milldale Lane.

Better in large:
It is the last meet between the eastbound and westbound "Canadian" in Winnipeg. While it wasn't the -50 windchill of the previous week it was still damn cold: nevertheless, crowds turned out to protest, greet family either working the trains or riding them, and even to witness the glamorous cruise trains roll into history. I walk the length of the train, out from under the (relatively) warm train shed to photograph our power, VIA Rail FP9A number 6307, using a used Yashicamat TLR medium format camera. Two classics, face to face...
In a few days a "new" Canadian will depart Toronto and head to Vancouver via Edmonton instead of Calgary. Don't be fooled: today's "Canadian" is a rebranded "Super Continental" although it does, thankfully, utilize former Canadian passenger cars (ex-Canadian Pacific Budd-built fluted stainless steel cars, instead of the Super Continental's former Canadian National smooth-side and painted Pullman-Standard rolling stock)..
An aside: in the next millenium I will photograph this same locomotive -- rebuilt into an FP9ARM and in classic Canadian Pacific passenger livery -- on the point of a special passenger train commemorating Canada's 150th anniversary. That photo will be in summer, in Montreal's Old Port, as a color digital file instead of black-and-white 120 film negative. And I won't be a passenger then...

Today is my 21st birthday. I don't really know what to say other than thank you all for the amazing support you have all given me the past couple years through my photographic adventures. I figure since I'm starting a new year of my life I should branch out a bit and try different things with my photos. So...here we goooo...
Yes, I realise this topic has already been talked over many times on our humble photo gallery. This time however, we have another big developement in front of us.
The famous Polish ban on photography had not really been in power, no matter what any person said. You were fully permitted to photograph anything you want, as long as you were on public grounds, which is a reasonable idea. All is to change now though.
My first post in this "no photo" topic has been published on 6.02.2024, when the Polish Ministry of National Defence published a draft of the ordinance containing the description of a "Photography forbidden" sign, along with many other things. This ordinance is what is required for the photo ban to be implemented in practice, as per a law published all the way back in 2022. The draft remained all that, just a draft, up until... this very day, 3.04.2025. It is now a full-blown ordinance of the allmighty Minister himself.
The published version can be seen on the official government service Dziennik Ustaw - dziennikustaw.gov.pl/DU
The ordinance itself, numbered 432 can be seen here - dziennikustaw.gov.pl/DU/2025/432 - contains a PDF file with the ordinance and a graphical display of the sign.
From now on, any person responsible for the security of an object of critical infrastructure (whatever that means...) will be able to hang out these legal signs and there is nothing the poor citizen can do about this, even when standing on public grounds.
*The ordinance comes into effect 14 days after its publishing, you have time until the 17th of April. For real now.*

Kevin is my favorite appraiser on Antiques Roadshow. We saw him walking, and we introduced ourselves, and he was kind enough to pose for a quick photo!
On social media, I won two tickets to the Santa Fe recording of Antiques Roadshow. I took a couple of lenses, and Kelly took her great-grandmother's ring. The ring appraised for a decent amount. The appraisers who looked at my lenses weren't very knowledgeable about camera gear.
