A look inward into the ruins at Old Sarum from the perimeter wall. Old Sarum is the site of the earliest settlement of Salisbury in England and is situated on a hill about 2 miles north of the present day Salisbury. This area is the former site of a royal palace built within the castle for King Henry I.

The site has a fascinating earlier history, too. Indications of prehistoric settlement have been discovered from as early as 3000 BCE and an Iron Age hillfort was erected around 400 BCE. Saxons took the fort in the 6th century and later used it as a stronghold against marauding Vikings. The Normans constructed a motte and bailey castle, a stone curtain wall, and a great cathedral.

Pronation is basically the inward rolling of your feet when you walk and run; it forms part of the natural movement which helps your lower legs deal with shock from impact. Some people tend to pronate either more which is called overpronation or less, which is called underpronation or supination...

In Nawalgarh, in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, India, we stayed at the Roop Niwas Kothi, a heritage hotel with an old world charm in the outskirt of town. It is on a large estate with stables for more than 75 Marwari horses.

The Marwari or Malani horse is a rare breed of horses from the Marwar (or Jodhpur) region of India, known for its inward-turning ear tips (as you can see on the black horse up front). The Marwari are descended from native Indian ponies crossed with Arabian horses, possibly with some Mongolian influence.

Just before sunset at feeding time, the horses that are in the paddock are brought back to the stables. As soon as the gate opens, they bolt back to the stables stirring up lots of dust along their path. It is a very exciting experience, charged with energy.

It may indeed be fantasy when I

Essay to draw from all created things

Deep, heartfelt, inward joy that closely clings;

And trace in leaves and flowers that round me lie

Lessons of love and earnest piety.

So let it be; and if the wide world rings

In mock of this belief, it brings

Nor fear, nor grief, nor vain perplexity.

So will I build my altar in the fields,

And the blue sky my fretted dome shall be,

And the sweet fragrance that the wild flower yields

Shall be the incense I will yield to Thee,

Thee only God! and thou shalt not despise

Even me, the priest of this poor sacrifice.

Yes, as evening descends, things disappear into the gathering darkness. H.D.'s poem reminds us that even shadow is eventually lost. Impossible, isn't it, to have shadow without light. H.D., by the way, was Hilda Doolittle, a 20th century poet, who died in 1961.

Evening

The light passes

from ridge to ridge,

from flower to flower—

the hepaticas, wide-spread

under the light

grow faint—

the petals reach inward,

the blue tips bend

toward the bluer heart

and the flowers are lost.

The cornel-buds are still white,

but shadows dart

from the cornel-roots—

black creeps from root to root,

each leaf

cuts another leaf on the grass,

shadow seeks shadow,

then both leaf

and leaf-shadow are lost.

"Livery", which is an uncommon word these days, at least for city slickers, means "horse" in this context.

where is there to look if not inward?

I got up early early to do this so that I could have time when I get home from work to spend solely with Anthony. We've been married 8 months today - we like to celebrate the 8's. We got married on 08-08-08 :) Sappy? yes. oh well!

update - Anthony just sent me a bunch of calla lillies at work for our 8 month, which was our wedding flower. even sappier? yes. oh well :)

I met this male mute swan (Cygnus olor) on the island I'm from this summer. It came with its mate and two young ones. He used some time cleaning his feathers, while his family searched for food. He was ringed and first registered nearby in November 2017.

The voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation. The voice of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace. . . *** one needs passion to share sunset & love to share sunrise. Here's a westward more inward facing view of the yards at Pitcairn. The turntable and roundhouse are to the left. This looks to have been shot at about where the westbound hump was. One of the three yard hump towers stands to the right of the frame.

Went down to the Marine Lab tonight. Good thing I went cause it was a full moon and the sight was awesome!

While shooting I noticed some fishermen who were setting a net. They put it down and in less than five minutes they were scooping up fish into their bag! Now I want to try it out!

You have experienced intense harm and evil so devastating that you find yourself questioning reality. It’s so easy for you to question yourself, to believe this means you are weak and it comes more naturally to turn this inward and severely criticize yourself. And you’re doing the hard work of looking for beauty and goodness wherever you can discover it and finding ways to try to express and validate your very real experience when you can’t find words for it. Maybe that is strength.

Recently I became very fascinated by digital pinhole photography. This image was created with a modified pinhole body cap. I think I’m drawn to this type of photography because I feel it relates to my life and it seems to teach me far beyond photography. There are strict limitations that can drastically alter how images are captured and the final outcome of the photos, there is a lack of clarity compared to how I normally capture images with a lens, it’s difficult to predict exactly how the image will look and beauty and meaning can be found in the process and the final photo. It gives me a chance to practice embracing the unfamiliar, change, finding beauty in imperfection and growing in new ways.

As a way to cope with circumstances beyond my control, survive and work to keep fighting for life I decided to try to take at least one photo (or more) each day. I call this “a photo (or more) a day.” Practicing this form of therapeutic photography helps me work to focus on the present moment, gives me something familiar and enjoyable to focus on as I use photography skills that have become like second-nature to me and being able to view the images I capture helps me recall what I was thinking, feeling and noticing at the moment when I created the photos. More of the photos from this series can be seen on my Instagram account

I may not always have the energy, time or capacity to share photos from this series—especially with the very challenging circumstances my family and I are experiencing—and will do my best to continue taking a photo (or more) a day even if I’m not able to share.

If you would like to support my work and my family, one way you can do so is by ordering my zines:

Since we live where everything is music,

everything is dancing.

Watch the dust grains moving

in the light near the window.

Their dance is our dance.

We rarely hear the inward music,

but we're all dancing to it nevertheless,

directed by the one who teaches us,

the pure joy of the sun,

our music master*

Lake George, Adirondacks, NY. The ice is receding around the edges of the lake, pulling inward to the center where the water is the coldest, giving up it's acreage grudgingly to vernal urgings. Just before the sun breaches the dip in the range that borders the east side of the lake, I sit alone in the stillness, waiting for the wind to stir as it always does at sunrise. A small puff and some whispers will break the silence, as when the lights come on in a darkened theater and the crowd feels like they have to comment. I expect it, it rolls over my shoulders, past my ears, like so much noise. Every morning is revealed differently, each revelation produces an opinion. I am locked on what I see. The wind will murmur out to the iceline, soon to be gone.

Limestone sculpture by Nicolas Moreton in the garden of Ashridge House, Hertfordshire. Leica M8, Elmar 90/4. Not interested in the voices out there. Happy in his selfishness. Denying that he is in a relationship to others, the world, and the Unknown. "Homo incurvatus in se", the human being turning inward and onto themselves, has been since the days of Augustine and Luther the theological definition of sin.

You cannot just brush the surface of a culture and pretend that you have found the answer. We must turn inward to the deepest of our own roots to find the very best of who we are.
