Plumeria (common name Frangipani; syn. Himatanthus Willd. ex Roem. & Schult.) is a small genus of 7-8 species native to tropical and subtropical Americas. The genus consists of mainly deciduous shrubs and trees. P. rubra (Common Frangipani, Red Frangipani), native to Mexico, Central America, and Venezuela, produces flowers ranging from yellow to pink depending on form or cultivar. From Mexico and Central America, Plumeria has spread to all tropical areas of the world, especially Hawaii, where it grows so abundantly that many people think that it is indigenous there.

Plumeria is related to the Oleander, Nerium oleander, and both possess poisonous, milky sap, rather similar to that of Euphorbia. Each of the separate species of Plumeria bears differently shaped leaves and their form and growth habits are also distinct. The leaves of P. alba are quite narrow and corrugated, while leaves of P. pudica have an elongated oak shape and glossy, dark green color. P. pudica is one of the everblooming types with non-deciduous, evergreen leaves. Another species that retains leaves and flowers in winter is P. obtusa; though its common name is "Singapore", it is originally from Colombia.

Plumeria flowers are most fragrant at night in order to lure sphinx moths to pollinate them. The flowers have no nectar, and simply dupe their pollinators. The moths inadvertently pollinate them by transferring pollen from flower to flower in their fruitless search for nectar.

This Flower is Called Champa in your Country. Its tree is about 20 - 25 feet tall and very week if you climb on it, its branches will break. The Most Amazing Thing about this Flower is Lizard are highly attract this Flower and Rushes toward it Children use to fix this flower on the top of a wire and attracts Lizards . As the time goes on new colors and sizes are invent by the producers. They smell good. I have seen just Yellow color images on Flickr of this flower Love for all . Let see how you all find this one.

The gummi bear originated in Germany and was invented in 1922 by HAns RIegel, a candy maker from BOnn.

It is made from a mixture of gelatin, sugar, glucose syrup, starch, flavouring, citric acid, and food colouring.

As a truly good sweet must also be a feast for the eyes, the colouration is the most important step in the production.

Each gummi bear is hand painted by qualified artists.

Although Mandelbrot invented the word fractal, some objects featured in The Fractal Geometry of Nature had been previously described by other mathematicians (the Mandelbrot set being a notable exception). However, they had been regarded as isolated curiosities with unnatural and non-intuitive properties. Mandelbrot brought these objects together for the first time and turned them around into essential tools for the long-stalled effort of extending the scope of science to non-smooth parts of the real world. He highlighted their common properties, such as self-similarity (linear, non-linear, or statistical), scale invariance and (usually) non-integer Hausdorff dimension.

He also emphasized the use of fractals as realistic and useful models of many phenomena in the real world that can be viewed as rough. Natural fractals include the shapes of mountains, coastlines and river basins; the structure of plants, blood vessels and lungs; the clustering of galaxies; Brownian motion. Man-made fractals include stock market prices but also music, painting and architecture. Far from being unnatural, Mandelbrot held the view that fractals were, in many ways, more intuitive and natural than the artificially smooth objects of traditional Euclidean geometry.

The word "fractal" has two related meanings. In colloquial usage, it denotes a shape that is recursively constructed or self-similar, that is, a shape that appears similar at all scales of magnification and is therefore often referred to as "infinitely complex." In mathematics a fractal is a geometric object that satisfies a specific technical condition, namely having a Hausdorff dimension greater than its topological dimension. The term fractal was coined in 1975 by Benoît Mandelbrot, from the Latin fractus, meaning "broken" or "fractured."

...it's mysterious how beautifully da universe is designed. Music and art are in and out of every part of it and us. No wonder (yes! wonder!) we are creative beings.

DAY 6: Power!

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, toys were all manual or clockwork and children loved them dearly, until one day some bright sparks invented the battery and toys were never the same again…

Every day millions of parents all around the world change the batteries in their children’s toys enabling these toys to whiz and whir around the home, flash their lights brightly and (most annoyingly) make nice loud noises. Delighted children love the things batteries can do, but the tears start to fall when the batteries go dead. Parents are thus slaves to these little battery tyrants and such slavery costs a fortune! But where does the humble battery originate from?

1748 was the date Benjamin Franklin first coined the term "battery" to describe an array of charged glass plates. In 1798 Italian physicist Count Alessandro Volta built the first voltaic pile which was a crude form of battery which consisted of a stack of paired copper zinc disks separated from one another by cardboard disks moistened with a salt or zinc solution.

Throughout the 19th century battery design was improved most notably by English chemist John F. Daniell, French chemist Georges Leclanche and German scientist Dr. Carl Gassner. Into the 20th century battery design was improved further still as the size of batteries was reduced significantly and improved by the introduction of lots of different types of batteries which last longer and are more efficient.

To give you an idea of the market that the humble battery commands here are the sales figures for 2004: 722,000,000 batteries were sold generating sales of £752,000,000 (source: Supreme-brands) and that’s only here in the UK. What the sales must be like earth wide is beyond comprehension. Somebody is making a lot of money from the sales of batteries, that’s for sure.

So the next time the batteries go dead in your child’s favourite toy and the tears start to flow, spare a thought for the time it took to arrive at the stage where those batteries are able to be so small and last so long. They may cost lots of money to replace, but deep down we must thank the genius of a lot of bright sparks for their invention – which helps our children play with their toys.

The river does not flow; it devours.

Each surge is a verdict,

each vortex a memory dragged back

into the architecture of forgetting.

The fractured vessel,

all splinters and forbidden reflections,

does not resist the pull.

It was born for this descent:

for the moment when water becomes a tongue

reciting the names of the vanished.

Its crystalline fins quiver,

catching the last remnants of a dying light,

but the current hisses its decree:

nothing rises that has once been claimed

by the abyss beneath the world.

Metal shards glint like drowned constellations,

circling an unseen core; a heart, perhaps,

still beating in defiance

against the erosion of its own origin.

Around it, the cataract thickens,

a crown of liquid ruin spiraling downward,

shaping a geometry older than gravity,

older even than the silence

that waits beneath all things.

The river tightens its grip.

Fissures bloom across the vessel’s skin

like nocturnal wounds,

exhaling a light that is not illumination

but confession.

And in that final trembling moment

before the waters seal their decree,

the mechanism leans into the void,

accepting the dissolution it once feared; not as an ending,

but as an exile returning

to the realm that first invented shadows.

For here, in the spiral where water becomes memory,

and memory becomes erosion,

the drowned know a truth unspoken:

nothing is ever lost; it merely sinks

to a depth

that refuses witnesses.

Invented in 2005 by Aerobie president Alan Adler. Coffee grounds and hot water are put inside the tubes and pressed out through a filter at the bottom. It telescopes into a small size convenient for travel and even camping. A source of hot water is all that's needed. (And coffee.)

Very flexible, it's easy to fine tune the kind of coffee you like.

Ektachrome Blue some of us will remember from the pre-digital age as a transparency film produced by the Kodak company of Rochester, NY. Invented in 1946, it had to be used with caution because it might give your transparencies (slides) a ghastly blue hue. More than fifty years earlier a young man from Hammondsport, NY, Glenn Curtiss (1878-1930), worked for Kodak, then still named Eastman. Among his inventions was a stencil machine (I wonder whether it used blue or purple ink then, as I recall from the fifties and early sixties). He was more of a mechanic, though, and became a pioneer in the aircraft industry.

Curtiss developed an engine with which an early airplane was fitted, called appropriately the Curtiss biplane. This was the plane that on July 7, 1911 made the very first successful flight in Rochester. Flown by Captain John (“Jack”) J. Frisbie (I don’t know if there is a relation to the popular frisbee toss-toy) (1868-1911), the plane was airborne for only about nine minutes and reached an altitude of 2000 feet. The local newspaper gives a great account of Frisbie’s feat, and quotes him memorably: “Pedestrians looked like insects merely moving along the pavement”. Frisbie regrettably lost his life in a nasty flying accident on September 11, 1911, in Kansas: the New York Times of that day reported that “Crowd goads airman to flight and death”. And indeed, also people in Rochester had mocked Curtiss and tried to dissuade the “Birdman” from his flying plans.

In 1921, Britton Field was bought by Rochester, and a first hangar was built in 1927. Later renamed Rochester Airport, the original name rang a bell of association in my mind. Nathaniel Lord Britton (1857-1934) and Charles Louis Pollard (1872-1945), two foremost American botanists, had been the moving force in establishing the so-called ‘Rochester Code’ for nomenclature in botany. This code was agreed upon at the 1892 meeting of the Botany Club during the annual conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science held in Rochester. But there have been many developments since then.

To return to ‘blue’: this marvellous blue stained glass window called “The Monument” (1992) is by the innovative artist Peter McGrain. Like Curtiss’s, Frisbie’s and Britton’s, it is cutting-edge science and technology. It is made of dichroic glass, which is a high-tech spin-off of space-age invention. Dichroic coatings of metallic oxides give glass the property of having more than one color, all depending on the angle from which it is viewed. This window has every kind of hue of blue and purple to be imagined, and the photo does only scant justice to its versatility.

The window is placed in the central atrium of the terminal. The rocking chairs can be used to contemplate the apron of the airport and to mull over the vicissitudes of historical tidbits.

This is the original helmet, on loan from the Science Museum to the Diving Museum, and is available for the public to see starting Good Friday.

It's getting cold here at the lake with a storm coming through. On day this week the high is forecast to be 30 degrees, with a low around zero. I captured this a couple of days ago.

I had gone outside to capture Comet C/2013 R1 Lovejoy and hopefully ISO if it survived, but growing fog on the lake started to block my horizon so I drove up on Monitor Pass to see if I could see the remnants of ISON sooner coming over the horizon. At this point ISON seems to be more of a debris field, fading in brightness, so it wasn't visible, but when I got back down to the lake the sun on the mist created some nice scenes.

Most people are sleeping or getting for work during sunrise and golden hour, but there must be a nearly endless supply of unique opportunities out there that we never see or record, simply because we're not there.

No doubt someone will develop a Web cam which can zoom in, provide it with software endowed with the "rules" of composition, perhaps even teach it to break those rules at times. But I don't think that even the same photo would have the same meaning coming as the result of software. Photos reflect the moments the photographer experienced, and when we share photos we share those experience. People seeing the photos can enjoy the moment vicariously, and they take away some portion of the feelings of wonder or peace that that such moments instill in us.

This sharing of the feelings, the emotion, behind these moments requires empathy, identifying with photographer. Can we feel empathy with a Webcam? Certainly the scenes they capture can be stunning at times, but without the protagonist, the photographer implied behind the camera, much of the meaning is lost. Perhaps we can still feel inspired simply seeing such images, but that requires inventing a theoretical photographer, perhaps imagining ourselves playing that role, enjoying that scene.

Humans are social beings. For centuries we've valued storytelling as a means to share experiences, knowledge, and learning. The first incarnation of the public rise of the Internet saw stories treated like text and data, indexed for keywords and regurgitated upon command, stripped of meaning. The Web 2.0 world has people connecting on social media networks, telling stories to each other in words and pictures, but that's still torn apart by technology and treated like the meaning is somewhere in the words. Our journey through life is the source of our stories, and each story has its own meaning, and that can't be separated from the storyteller.

Photographers can feverishly circle the world and produce dramatic images, but if they have no story there's something missing, like an orchestra limited to a few instruments and notes.

By all means chase the iconic national park views to your heart's content, but there's a story behind your pursuit, and it's the story of you: your life, what's important to you, who's important to you, why you do what you do.

What's your story?

In 1860 Thomas Aveling invented the traction engine, offering an alternative to horses in agricultural haulage. Eleven years later, approximately when this engine was built, Aveling was improving his design for the self-propelling power plant. This engine was one of the first to be steered by its front wheels (earlier designs were steered by a fifth wheel) and to have gear-driven rear wheels. These features, as well as the Aveling patented method of supporting the crankshaft, were to become standard on all traction engines. This engine was renovated by Aveling-Barford Ltd in the 1950s before being donated to the Science Museum.

Built in 1870-72, it is the oldest surviving traction engine to show all the features that became standard on all traction engines for the next 60 years.

Traction engines were often used as a portable power source for various machines, driven by a long belt from a flywheel. The engines would travel from far to far at harvest time, where they would drive a threshing machine (which separated the wheat from the chaff and stalks).

For many people, the traciton engine was probably their first encounter with the "machine age." In Tess of the d'Urbervilles, published in 1891, Thomas Hardy described the harsh pace of the new machinery as Tess helped to feed corn into the threshing machine. "It was the ceaselessness of the work that tried her so severely .... For Tess there was no respite; for, as the drum never stopped, the man who fed it could not stop, and she, who had to supply the man with untied sheaves, could not stop either."

Traction engines were also used to haul heavy industrial equipment and also pulled 'road trains' consisting of several wagons. However, their average speed was slow - about 4 mph.

Aveling and Porter exported steam engines all over the world. They also pioneered the steam road-roller - really a traction engine with heavy rollers for wheels - thus steam "paved the way" for the petrol, diesel and electric vehicles of today...
