There is no concrete evidence on who exactly was the first to invent the windmill, whether it was the Chinese or the Persians is up for debate. Regardless, both cultures began using this technology around the same time for the same purposes.

Some believe that the windmill technology was brought to Northern Europe as a result of the crusades, however their horizontal axis design rather than the vertical axis system, makes it just as likely that the Europeans discovered their windmill independently. The first existing illustrations from 1270 A.D. show blue-prints of the post mill type of windmill.

The post mill was composed of a four bladed mill mounted onto a central post, which used wooden cog-and-ring gears to covert the motion of the horizontal shaft to vertical motion that turned a grind stone. According to the Illustrated History of Wind Development, the wooden cog-and-ring gear was used by Vitruvius, an engineer of the Augustan Age, to develop the first horizontal axis water wheel.

The tower mill design is believed to have come into existence around the late 1300s, with the earliest known illustration being of a Normandy Mill between 1430 and 1440. The tower mill was made with sloping walls, a cap that could be rotated, a horizontal wind shaft, and vertical sails.

The smock mill, developed by the Dutch in 1526 based on the tower mill, is a vertical tapered tower with four to six sides topped with a cap that rotates to bring the sails into the wind. The smock mill was named from its resemblance to the smocks worn by farmers at the time.

Over the next 500 years windmills gained many diverse applications beyond just water-pumping and grinding grain including irrigation, drainage pumping, saw milling of timber, and processing tobacco, spices, cocoa, paints, and dyes.

The shadows invent designs never seen before, while the light observes them in silence.

MOVING LANDSCAPES

Mr Wilde has said that sunsets are out of fashion. This defect

could undoubtedly be covered

up if landscapes constantly moved around. The fact of seeing a

landscape in the same place

- is necessarily boring. The contrary would be charming. And

spectacular. A cluster of

trees migrating under the sky. Or a tree going on its way to the

jungle - alone -straight-

on its countless little, white legs.

But then people would invent cages to trap landscapes. and a

landscape in a cage can't feel

very happy.

No question, the Italians have got style and the Tuscans invented it.

Quoting www.invitationtotuscany.com/guide/italy/tuscany/why-and-h...:

In the 13th century, towns such as San Gimignano were often run by feuding noble families, whose towers would show off their economic power. The building process, involving digging the materials, carting them to the site and building the tower, was neither simple nor cheap. The towers were, and still are, owned by private families.

In San Gimignano today, only 14 towers remain of the 72 which stood in the 14th century. This still makes it the "city of beautiful towers" and guaranteed its UNESCO World Heritage Site recognition.

It's perfect, as there was so much new stuff that fit perfectly.

The Avenue has some wonderful stuff from Zibska! The Yingtai decoration, along with the blush and lipstick are striking with the Aceri eyemakeup that came out for the event! Grab it before it's gone! The headpiece is unrigged, so you can have fun with some of the falling petals, like I did!

The screw thread is believed to have been invented around 400 BCE, by Archytas of Tarentum, a Greek philosopher sometimes called “the father of mechanics.” The general principle of the screw was applied early on, in cities like Pompeii, to extract olive oil and grape juice. It was further developed the Greek mathematician Archimedes to alter water levels. The water screw, first mentioned in Mechanica of Heron of Alexandria, was made from wood and aided farm irrigation and rid ships of bilge water.

When the light reaches the throat of the Brazilian Ruby Hummingbird (male), the green feathers change to golden or to ruby depending on the angle you are looking and the angle the of the light itself.

In these two photos you can see part of the transformation: golden in the first photo and light ruby (something more similar to orange) in the second photo. But I assure to you that the throat really changes to vibrant ruby tone depending of the light and movement of the bird too.

7 fun facts about hummingbirds

1- The indigenous gave very suggestive names to the hummingbirds, which perfectly described these charming birds:

For the "Caraíbas indians", they were the “colibris”, which means “resplendent area”.

The "Tupis" called them “guainumbis”, that is, “sparkling birds”.

For the "Guarani indians", on the other hand, hummingbirds were the “mainumbis”, that is, “those who enchant, next to the flower, with its light and splendor”.

2- Its huge heart, which represents 19 to 22% of the total body weight, facilitates the rapid circulation of blood.

3- In a single day, they are able to ingest nutritious substances up to 8 times their body weight.

4- Some hummingbirds develop average speeds ranging from 30 to 70 km per hour and the vibration of the wings can reach 50 to 70 beats per second.

5- They are the only birds that can literally stand still in the air, take off and land vertically, and even reverse in mid-flight.

6- The spectacular color of hummingbirds originates from the phenomenon of refraction of light, through the microstructure of the feathers. The color changes, observed in the same bird, vary according to the angle of incidence of sunlight or the movement of the body.

7- They say that Igor Sirkorski, who invented the helicopter, based his ideas on the continuous observation of the flight of hummingbirds. However, the helicopter cannot fly upside down. Hummingbirds can.

El hombre fue inventando los instrumentos uno tras otro. Pero ya desde la prehistoria el hombre era un instrumento para el hombre.

Souvenir shops line up along the streets in the town at the foot of Nui Sam. The shops specialise in selling souvenirs for pilgrims, which means they must be conservable as you see in the photo.

The most notable souvenir in Nui Sam seemed to be salt-preserved fish meats as displayed in the centre of the photo, which are collectively called "mắm."

Fish meat ferments without toxic bacterias if stored with salt even in the tropical climate.

Nước mắm, the fish source that provides a basis for Vietnamese cooking, is the water (nước) exuding from fermenting fish meat. I admire the first people who tried the liquid with an odd smell.

There is a variation to preserve fish meat, which does not only add salt but also cooked rice. It produces lactic fermentation, and fish meat is preserved with slightly sour taste. This is the original Sushi that is found in Sutheast Asia, southern China, as well as in Japan.

What is known as Sushi in the world is its instant version that skips the fermentation process, which was invented in the 18th century in Edo (present-day Tokyo). It's a drastic departure from the original purpose of preservation.

Boredom on a damp day sets in :-) Oh thank you thank you to whoever invented PhotoShop!!! :-)))) Anybody coming for a ride then?

The simple act of the spider weaving a star

in the gloom,

the elastic step of the cat towards the butterfly,

the hand that slides down the warm back of the horse,

the sidereal smell of the coffee flower,

the blue taste of vanilla,

they stop me at the bottom of the day.

There is a concave glow of ferns,

an Insect Resonance,

a changing presence of water in the stone corners.

I recognize here my age made of wild sounds,

of orchid fire,

of warm forest space,

where the woodpecker chimes the time.

Here the sunset invents a red rhinestones,

a constellation of fireflies,

a fall of lucid leaves towards the senses,

towards the end of the day,

where my free bones are enchanted.

Qué raro que entre los griegos,

no hubiera uno que se ocupara

Ya sé, ya sé que no existía,

Bio scope is an early form of motion-picture projector, invented during 1900. I captured the moment in a Bengali New Year carnival. Young viewer watches through the view finder and the owner dressed in dazzling attire operates the machine.

The Litomyšl Castle is an outstanding example of an arcaded Renaissance country residence, a type of structure first invented in Italy and then developed in the Czech Lands to create a mature form with special architectural value. Situated at an important communications junction on the main route between Bohemia and Moravia, in the Pardubice region, Litomyšl was a fortified centre on the hill where the castle now stands.

The work on the Renaissance building began in 1568 under the supervision of Jan Baptista Avostalis (Giovanni Battista Avostalli), who was soon joined by his brother Oldřich (Ulrico). Most of the work had been completed by 1580. The castle interior underwent alterations between 1792 and 1796, based on the designs of Jan Kryštof Habich, but he was careful to preserve the fine building’s Renaissance appearance with impressive gables.

The castle is a four-winged, three-storeyed structure with an asymmetrical disposition. The western wing is the largest, whereas the southern wing is a two-storeyed arcaded gallery, closing the second square courtyard (a feature that is unique to Litomyšl). The groin-vaulted arcading continues around the western and eastern sides of the courtyard. The south-eastern corner of the eastern wing contains the castle chapel. One of the most striking features in the interior of the castle consists in the fine neoclassical theatre from 1796-97 in the western wing. The original painted decoration of the auditorium, stage decorations and stage machinery have survived intact. The house has richly decorated interiors, basically Renaissance in form and with lavish late Baroque or neoclassical ornamentation in the form of elaborate plasterwork and wall and ceiling paintings.

The buildings associated with the castle were all built or rebuilt during the course of the modifications that the castle itself underwent over time, and this is reflected in their architectural styles. Among the ancillary buildings, the most interesting is the Brewery, the birthplace of Bedřich Smetana, one of the greatest Czech composers of all time. It lies to the south of the first courtyard. Originally constructed to complement the castle, with Renaissance sgraffito decoration, it was remodelled by the well-know

n architect František Maximilián Kaňka after the 1728 fire and received what is its present appearance. The ensemble also includes the former French formal garden with its saletta (pavilion) in the Baroque style and an 18th-century English-style park. (whc.unesco.org/en/list/901/)

Not too long ago, it dawned on me that I hadn't been to this area of town since early in the year when I changed jobs and locations, so today as the sun started to set I figured I'd go take a look.

The Rock Sculptures by John Felice Ceprano are back again this year and as always, they're amazing.

A very busy place for photographers to gather at sunrise and sundown, and today's sunset was no exception, luckily for me though, I found a little corner that no one had noticed.

If you'd like to know more about the artist, you can visit his website, www.jfceprano.com/.

Hope everyone has had a good day.

I blame people like us. We take pictures of pretty things in pretty places and share them with the world after all, so what do we expect? Post them here on the pages of Flickr and the chances are that only photographers will see them. But then again so many of us also post our photos on sites where a lot more people see them - pretty people who grin into their phones and post the images to far more followers than many of us are ever likely to have. Guilty Milord.

Well that's what I was thinking to myself yesterday as I searched for the quieter spaces amongst the hordes. It was a bit of a surprise to find so many people here on a Monday, but what we hadn't bargained for was the fact that it was a Baker Day, an occasional school closure day devised by an Education Secretary of yesteryear who wanted to invent something to endorse his passage into the House of Lords with a knighthood before leaving office. They all like to do things like that don't they? Suffice to say, there were far more people wandering around the handful of increasingly famous poppy fields than expected, most of them respectful, but with a noticeable minority strolling in among the flowers as if they somehow thought their footsteps wouldn't cause any damage to this fragile beauty spot. In fact one of you had recently asked me whether it was worth visiting the poppies this year, and a few messages were exchanged on the subject as I held my head in my hands at the sight of the family who took turns to lie down in an already flattened bed just a handful of yards in front of the composition I was busily lining up. And I'll bet their Instagram post gets a load more likes than mine does too. If I were half a head taller and rather more menacing in nature I might have had words, but of course I'm British and I don't like to make a scene. How often I've watched Arnold or Clint in a movie just looking at the bad guys in a certain way, artfully persuading them to move on with nothing more than the raising of a single eyebrow unless they wanted to be turned into toast. "I need your clothes, your boots, and your motorcycle." I wish I could do that sometimes. Most of the time in fact.

Relieved that the world had finally gone back to work, we'd arrived here in the van for the day after a fun packed "platty joobs" (I think I've spelt that correctly) weekend, at times checking in to see how Her Majesty was holding up amid all the excitement. At other moments over the long weekend we wandered across the road, making use of our locals' free entry wristbands to the ever growing music festival that drowns all other sounds from the air around here for three days at this time each year. Of course neither Ali nor I are keen on crowds, but it didn't stop us from making our way to the front row to see what a sixty year old pop star with a penchant for profanities who's spent much of his life shovelling illegal substances into his bloodstream looks like. A fun gig, but although she may be ninety-six, the Queen looks a lot better than Shaun Ryder, bless him. No wonder Black Grape have only made three albums in twenty-nine years.

This year's poppy show also seemed to have expanded, with more fields than ever seemingly painted red, planted by the National Trust who own this patch of land. Maybe it needed to be so in order to accommodate the number of people who seemed intent on visiting. Maybe I'm just used to arriving later in the day when most of them have headed to the Bowgie for their supper. But I'd decided I was going to go low to the ground and concentrate on greens, yellows and of course reds, rather than blues, making the sky all but an irrelevance. I've shot that classic view more than once before, and so have many others, so this time I preferred to concentrate on the small details right in front of me. Not for the first time I used the long lens that seems to work so well here, and I'm still wondering whether the 100-400 might have been an even better option. I had the crop camera with the art lens in the bag too, but that's where it stayed.

What did surprise me when I saved my raw files into my online drive was the fact that it was my first visit here since 2018. And there was I thinking I came here every year. So it seems that I may not be responsible for the arrival of the masses after all. It must be you then. Although I've just done it myself again haven't I?

Juro que si las llegan a inventar soy la primera en obtenerlas ♥

Michael Orton invented this technique in the mid-1980's, where he achieved the effect by superimposing two slides (analog), which is why this type of photography is also known as the sandwich - technique.

Once upon a time (LoL) I read about the Orton effect and loved it.

To create an Orton Effect image, first create a sharp, correctly exposed photo, and then a blurred image that is 2-3 f-stops overexposed. The effect varies depending on the amount of blurring. A tripod must be used because the images must be absolutely congruent, the image must be in RAW and in manual mode. Then both photographs have to be overlaid with an image processing program (Photoshop) and then multiplied.

Open the photos in a RAW software of your choice. Make basic adjustments - contrast - white balance ect.

Open the photos in PS. With the move - tool you drag the blurred photo onto the sharp photo. You can then use the blending mode to create the characteristic effect. The best:> Lighten -> Multiply negative and> Soft light. Then go to> Layer / New Adjustment Layer / Gradiation Curves and adjust the photo until you like it. Depending on how picturesque you want it to be. I haven't done much of anything because it's a beautiful tree anyway. I was absolutely amazed how the colors changed. The originals are really different to the end result. My advice is to choose a motif that doesn't have as much empty space as mine here. I will definitely test it more often.

I smiled all over my face, as I went through the variuos steps.

Have fun testing dear HSS people ;-)

Thermoscope invented by Galileo Galilei in the early 1600s.

A brief on the science behind it:

Archimedes’ Principle: Objects float or sink depending on whether they are less or denser than the fluid they’re in.

Liquid Density: The clear liquid inside the thermoscope expands slightly as it warms, making it less dense. When it cools, it contracts and becomes denser.

Calibrated Bulbs: Each colored glass bulb has a small metal tag with a specific weight. These weights are carefully chosen so that at certain temperatures, the buoyant force matches the bulb’s weight.
