This origami Rose is invented by Toshikazu Kawasaki. He is a Japanese origami designer, who is known for his geometrically innovative models. He is particularly famous for his series of fourfold symmetry origami "roses", all based on a twisting maneuver that allows the petals to seem to curl out from the center of the flower.

It is one of the most beautiful roses ever designed and has inspired many other. I folded this famous model many, many years ago, but never made a photo of it, so I folded it again ;-)

Measuring 46 feet across and spanning the length of the gallery’s wall, the monumental Joystick is an ode to Rosenquist’s love of flying. Based on reflections from a mirrored cylinder, packed with gyrating forms that move at incredible speed, the space of Joystick is invented, abstract, and wholly optical. “The priority for me is visual invention and, really, content is secondary,” Rosenquist told the late art historian Robert Rosenblum. By contrast, the central expanse of The Geometry of Fire is a reflection of real space. Painted after a devastating fire destroyed the artist’s Florida studio, the 25 foot long picture depicts the wildness of fire on the left and the destruction it causes, seen in the melting, exploding hub caps on the right. At the picture’s center is the mysterious cosmos, populated with the galaxies, star showers and black holes that became the subject of Rosenquist’s last paintings.

te amé, estela invisible, noche a noche.

From John Walker's Friction Lights to Samuel Jones' Lucifers

In 1827, the pharmacist John Walker invented the first friction-lighting match, as we know it today. Inspired by the work of an Irish physicist and chemist, Robert Boyle, he imagined a mixture that could ignite by friction on a rough surface. As a good scientist, and not wanting to make the process of his discovery known, he refused to patent it, contenting himself with marketing his product himself, and going about his business as a pharmacist, botanist and mineralogist. This process for manufacturing matches ended up being patented under the name of Lucifers by a certain Samuel Jones. However, Lucifers presented many problems: unstable and violent flame, unpleasant odor. It is said that despite all these inconveniences, the number of smokers increased because of this invention. They could finally wander around in nature, with their cigarettes, cigars and pipes, in complete independence.

For my copyright by mankind theme I chose the average kitchen sponge. HSoS!. History below from reference.com:

German scientist Otto Bayer, who founded the Bayer Company, was the inventor of polyurethane foam, the material from which sponges are made. Bayer invented this material by accident in 1937.

As German scientists persisted in creating uses for polyurethane foam, they created a defective batch that had many air bubbles. The outcome resembled sea sponges, which had been used since the Middle Ages to help wash the body. Prior to that, people used rags to wash dishes.

The earliest polyurethane sponges were easily destroyed during dish washing due to their fragility. As the technology progressed, these sponges were designed to be more durable.

This doorway is on Broad Street. I liked the bench and shadows. The boot scraper always reminds me of how filthy streets used to be with open sewers and no street cleaning. I think it was Ben Franklin who invented street cleaning, all those years ago (but well after this boot scraper was fitted obviously). I think there's a horse mounting block in the car park here behind the building.

Many thanks to whoever invented the 'spellcheck'.

Thermoscope invented by Galileo Galilei in the early 1600s.

A brief on the science behind it:

Archimedes’ Principle: Objects float or sink depending on whether they are less or denser than the fluid they’re in.

Liquid Density: The clear liquid inside the thermoscope expands slightly as it warms, making it less dense. When it cools, it contracts and becomes denser.

Calibrated Bulbs: Each colored glass bulb has a small metal tag with a specific weight. These weights are carefully chosen so that at certain temperatures, the buoyant force matches the bulb’s weight.

Et si tu n'existais pas

Dis-moi pourquoi j'existerais

Pour traîner dans un monde sans toi

Sans espoir et sans regret

Et si tu n'existais pas

J'essaierais d'inventer l'amour

Je me sentirais perdu

J'aurais besoin de toi

Et si tu n'existais pas

Dis-moi comment j'existerais

Je pourrais faire semblant d'être moi

Mais je ne serais pas vrai

Et si tu n'existais pas

Je crois que je l'aurais trouvé

Le secret de la vie, le pourquoi

Simplement pour te créer

Et pour te regarder

Et si tu n'existais pas

Dis-moi pourquoi j'existerais

Pour traîner dans un monde sans toi

Sans espoir et sans regret

Et si tu n'existais pas

J'essaierais d'inventer l'amour

This beautiful song was performed by Joe Dassin, who was born in Brooklyn, New York City, to Jewish-American parents. His father was the film director Jules Dassin, and his mother was the violinist Béatrice Launer, who studied at the Juilliard School. Both of his parents were mostly of Ukrainian-Jewish extraction from Kamianets-Podilskyi, Sataniv, and Buchach.

I heard this song in June of 1998. I listened to the tape for the next two years because it matched my feelings at the time.

P.S. Only a decade later, I found out where he was actually from… not too far from me.

Alla ricerca di quella luce.

mi piaceva inventarle ...

mi piaceva cantarle.

Invented in the 19th century, this type of extinguisher was filled with sodium bicarbonate solution. To operate, a plunger at the thick end was banged on the floor, smashing a glass phial of sulphuric acid inside the unit. The acid reacted violently with the bicarbonate and the carbon dioxide produced pressurised the container expelling the contents through the tapered nozzle. Best not to lean over it while operating the plunger then! Seen in the historical section of Snape Maltings, in its original position on the malting floor.
