To protect themselves from Chinese pirates, the Spanish fortified their city with stone walls. Close to everything besides the walls and one cathedral got demolished when the US reclaimed the city in 1945. Because of the Japanese tradition of not surrendering, the US decided to demolish the city than risk lives by engaging in building to building combat.

Part of the wall surrounding intramuros. Spaniards built the wall during the 16th century to protect key government buildings from attacks. Intramuros was heavily damage during the 2nd world war.
Away from the pollution and brown thick haze common to big cities, this part of Manila is just amazing with clear blue sky most of the time.
Intramuros, located along the southern bank of the Pasig River, was built by the Spaniards in the 16th century and is the oldest district of the city of Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Its name, in Spanish, intramuros, literally "within the walls", meaning within the wall enclosure of the city/fortress, also describes its structure as it is surrounded by thick, high walls and moats. During the Spanish colonial period, Intramuros was considered Manila itself.
