WATCHTOWERS IN THE WALLED CITY
Watchtowers were attached on the corners of a fortification to observe the seashores, and massive land areas if there are pirates, or groups that aims to invade a territory, just like in Intramuros. During 1500s to 1600s, Intramuros was a target to many foreign invasions such as those came from China, Japan, and other invaders. To avoid those incidents, the Spanish Government had several plans to build walls with watchtowers for additional defense. These watchtowers are still intact until today (some of them are found in Fort Santiago, Baluarte De Dilao, Baluarte de San Diego, Baluarte De San Andres, Baluarte De San Gabriel, and other parts of Intramuros).

PUERTA REAL, INTRAMUROS, MANILA
Puerta Real (translated "Royal Gate") is one of the famous gates to enter the Walled City of Old Manila, Intramuros. It was served as main Royal entrance of the Governors General, the friars, and the higher authorities in the Philippine Islands. Its present gate is strategically positioned based on the defense plans for Manila especially during the incumbency of Gov. Gen. Jose Basco y Vargas on 1780. The gate was damaged during the Liberation of Manila, but eventually restored by Intramuros Administration in 1969 with additional works in 1989.

Fort Santiago is one of the oldest fortifications in the Philippines built on 1571 on the destroyed kingdom of Rajah Sulayman, the Islamic Kingdom of Maynilad at the bank of Pasig River. The design was based on the forts in the Ancient Europe during the 16th century. It was named after St. James the Moor-slayer, known by the Spanish as Santiago Matamoros.
This place served as prison for one of the Philippines' National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal and served as battle ground for Filipino, American and Japanese forces during World War 2. Now, the shrine is currently maintained by Intramuros Administration where the Rizal Shrine, Tanghalang Rajah Sulayman, and the LEGO Display is currently located.

During three hundred years of colonialization, Philippine architecture was dominated by Spanish influences. During this period, Intramuros, the walled city of Manila, was built with its walls, houses, churches and fortress. The Augustinian friars, along with other religious orders, built a large number of grand churches and cathedrals all over the Philippine Islands.
This is the restored grand staircase of Ayuntamiento De Manila located beside Plaza De Roma in Intramuros, the Walled City of Old Manila. It consist of pillars designed in neo-classical style, and two lion statues displayed before it.
ABOUT AYUNTAMIENTO DE MANILA
Las Casas Consistoriales de Manila (or popularly known as Ayuntamiento de Manila) is one of the historical buildings inside Intramuros, City of Manila. The present structure is the fourth reincarnation of the building since 1571 (and one of the victims of WWII). The building remained as ruins until 2011, when Bureau of Treasury decided to revive Ayuntamiento as its main office. One of the famous attractions inside the building is the marble hall where its floor is made of marble, and the design looks like from the designs of the palaces in Europe.
The building has its functions as time goes by:
1. Office of the "Cabildo" or the City Council of Manila (which today is equivalent to the LGU of Manila.)
2. Philippine Legislature (American Era)
3. Supreme Court (American Era)
4. Bureau of Treasury (present; after its restoration and reconstruction on 2014)

Intramuros is a fortified area located within Manila. It is the city's oldest district and historic core, with its establishment beginning the city's history and habitation. It name, intramuros, is Latin for "within the walls". During the Spanish colonial period, places located beyond the walls were commonly referred to as extramuros, which means "outside the walls" .It earned the nickname The Walled City because of the thick defensive walls surrounding the fortification built by the Spaniards in the late 16th century to protect it from foreign invasions. During the Spanish period, Intramuros would be synonymous with Manila itself.
