The Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles was a location dressed to play NASA's rocket silo in the 2014 movie "Interstellar". The shooting took place in the huge six level lobby of the hotel. Lucky me, I was attending a function at the hotel on one of the days the filming took place. This lobby is a maze of six levels of bridges, stairways, walkways, and elevators, so my knowledge of the exact areas that the shooting took place proved to be valuable for my photo hunt.

The hotel is located at 404 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles.

An unfortunate emergency landing resulted in a very fortunate view.

The competitors in The Interstellar Snuff Circuit - ISC for short - aren't the sanest bunch. One might wonder, though, if Nude Alex isn't the craziest. His Vroomfast (named by himself) is the speediest vehicle in the race. It should be the given winner going by numbers alone, but Nude Alex tends to trust his co-pilot Coco too much. He insists Coco is his late partner's reincarnated soul, but space science usually shows her to be an ordinary bird.

I enjoyed taking pictures outside so much I took all of the shots there. Is this working for you or is it too distracting?

Webb is giving astronomers an unprecedented look of the fine details and 3D structure of the dust and gas between the stars.

The space between the stars is not empty, but rather filled with filaments of dust and gas (known as the interstellar medium), which is often invisible until something illuminates it. Here, a long-ago supernova explosion, acting like a flashbulb, has heated some of this interstellar material, causing it to glow in the infrared, creating a thermal “light echo.”

The structures in these filaments are on a remarkably small scale of about 400 astronomical units, or less than one-hundredth of a light-year. (An astronomical unit, or AU, is the average Earth-Sun distance and is equal to 93 million miles or 150 million kilometers.)

Webb observed this light echo in the vicinity of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A three separate times, in essence creating a 3D scan of the interstellar material. Note that the field of view in the top row is rotated slightly clockwise relative to the middle and bottom rows, due to the roll angle of the Webb telescope when the observations were taken.

Image description: Three rows show Webb images of the same region taken on three different dates. The top row is labeled August 19, 2024. The middle row is labeled September 16, 2024. The bottom row is labeled September 30, 2024. Each row shows two images split by a vertical black bar where there is no data. Each image is speckled with dozens of white stars, some showing Webb’s signature 8-point diffraction spikes, against the black background of space. The images also show tightly packed, glowing red filaments that resemble muscle fibers or wood grain. While the background stars are the same in every row, the filaments change noticeably. In the top row, the filaments extend horizontally from upper left to lower right. In the middle and bottom rows, the filaments extend from lower left to upper right, and seem to shift slightly downward in position, with the last the lowest.

I created my own page of the book in Microsoft Word so that I could get the quote on a single line. Then I placed the page in a book and weighted it down with the ring and something else. From here it was just getting the depth of field correct, with a good composition and lighting.

Strobist Info: Lit with a single flash from camera left with a honeycomb attached. This allowed for the heavy shadows seen here, which adds bit of drama.

ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) has obtained new images of 3I/ATLAS, an interstellar object discovered last week. Identified as a comet, 3I/ATLAS is only the third visitor from outside the Solar System ever found, after 1I/ʻOumuamua and 2I/Borisov. Its highly eccentric hyperbolic orbit, unlike that of objects in the Solar System, gave away its interstellar origin.

In this image, several VLT observations have been overlaid, showing the comet as a series of dots that move towards the right of the image over the course of about 13 minutes on the night of 3 July 2025. The data were obtained with the FORS2 instrument, and are available in the ESO archive.

INTERSTELLAR is director Christopher Nolan’s first film since his comic-book closer THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and is a very much-anticipated (and mysterious) sci-fi thriller. The British filmmaker has been deliberately vague in early interviews in the build up to INTERSTELLAR’s release ...

The dreaded ChaosPro-Photoshop combination again. PS afficionados will instantly recognize the "filter-render-clouds" and "filter-render-lens flare" functions at work here.

I spent today working on texture and realism, going back over the airbrushed work with a flat wide brush and white paint, nothing complex but it immediately subdues the cartoony airbrush shading into something more textured, worn out.

This is a fun challenge in restraint compared with Star Wars models where everything is filthy to excess...I've been looking carefully at the Space Shuttle panelling for reference.
