Haven't seen these in a while way out west.

in between editting my weekend wedding photographs i kept a watchful eye on my nephew derek. he wasn't very happy in his playpen, the safest place to be !

Whilst photographing the solitary Southern Black-Backed Gull a few days ago that was sitting on the side of the Hutt River, dozens upon dozens of Black-Backed Gulls swooped over-head and landed a little up-river from the loan bird.

It wasn't difficult to find them. They numbered in their hundreds and were sitting on a rock bank in the middle of the river! And this was obviously a very big catch-up session - one which even included Juveniles...!

After watching them from a discreet distance for about 10 minutes, one of the birds suddenly sounded an alarm (though I didn't hear anything unusual!), and the whole flock swarmed into the air, screaming in panic..! They circled once, and then all swooped back to exactly where they'd been a few seconds earlier, and carried on their respective conversations!

What interesting behaviour...!

(You'll have to view this in "Extra Large" format (Double-click the photo) to see this big flock in better detail).

Continue to keep well everyone, and a big "Thank You" for taking the time and the trouble to leave a Comment...! It's always nice to hear from you, and your comments are always greatly appreciated...!

When Junior pulled up his catch, I thought it was a fail. I only saw the evergreen needles and a leaf. However, look higher on the top of the bill & you can see a little fish head, the actual prey. Success.

I'll check with fish experts but not sure the id will go any further.

This is the back of the building I recently added to my Flickr, one or two posts back. It has an interesting history, from hosting celebrities as a hotel to its current private academy tenants. It's one of those places that just kind of stands out from the others.

Like many folks after I’ve been working hard, either physically or mentally, I like to grab a camera and relax by capturing a few images. This afternoon I finished building a ‘honey-do’ project in the backyard and I had a little bit of available time. So, I grabbed one of my...

outside Rochester Minn...this 160 acre farm was purchased by a German Immigrant, George Stoppel and his wife for $200 in 1856....after spending the first winter in a 'dugout' construction began on a log cabin home. The limestone home was a slow project with outbuildings being constructed as the farming operation succeeded. The farm is now on the national register.....

I'm fairly confident that this is Lemidia, and I am wondering how varied cicatricosa is? I have found that once before and this seems along the same lines. This is where I need Justin to magically appear from the ether :-)

Working as an art scanner, I see some interesting pieces sometimes.

Found this while sorting this evening, no idea if this is generally "known" or not. It's tricky to get them to not look crooked, but they really do sit comfortably in place. They don't slide around or fall out if you turn it upside down, and you don't need four to make it work, one will do the same thing on it's own.

Might have to guess where this was :-)

Black-capped chickadee

by Francis Stella

A friend of mine, a friend to all,

We named him for his cheerful call

And the handsome little cap of coal

He wears on neighborhood patrol.

And when I’m in his woods he’ll fly

To some low branch I happen by,

Though if he were just somewhat bolder

I think he’d light upon my shoulder.

He offers me a friendly greeting

Then hops about throughout our meeting;

In his white and gray and sable

That tiny bird is always able

To raise my spirits when I’m low

And force my hurried step to slow.

And on the topic of the day

There’s so much that he comes to say!

Though what that topic really is—

Well, the topic’s only ever his;

For though I’d like to say I heard

Something from this little bird,

I’ve yet to understand a word,

And I really would agree

With those who’d shared his company

And aptly named him chickadee.

A friend of mine, a friend from youth,

But friend as well to fact and truth,

For when I’m passing by his wood

And ask if she is gone for good,

Ask if she’ll come back to me,

I hear him answer, plaintively:

No, never.

No, never.

Please do not send any invitations at this time. I'm so far behind that I'm going need a month of Flickr time to update all my invitations and that would be when I finish my project. I appreciate your personal comments though. I'm going to quote this phrase from a dear friend of mine "Do not add your picture or Flickr river link with your comment, it will be removed"
