Mr. Burleson was a pioneer in the Martial Arts, establishing his first studio in 1959. he now has over 250,000 graduates. Many of his Black Belts are admired and respected world-wide.
Mr Burleson began his career as a Boxing Champion and got his start in the martial arts after he joined the Navy, as part of the Naval Special Forces. It was during his miliary travels, that he first studied various fighting systems from China, Japan, and Korea. Those disciplines became the basis of the Burleson system., an art that combined the Orien't most effective fighting techniques. His stye became known as "American Karate". In 1964 he used this system to win the United States first National Karate Championship, held in Washington D.C. That "win" earned him the title as "Father of all American Karate Champions".

YUMA, Ariz. - U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Lavieri, Command Control Communications, Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1), provides instruction to Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) 2-14 Course students on the AN/PRC-150 High-Frequency Radio March 21, 2014. WTI is a seven week training event hosted by MAWTS-1 cadre, which emphasizes operational integration of the six functions of Marine Corps aviation in support of a Marine Air Ground Task Force. MAWTS-1 provides standardized advanced tactics and certification of unit instructor qualifications to support Marine Aviation Training and Readiness and assists in developing and empowering aviation weapons and tactics. One of the most exciting components of A+ Partners in Education, Battle of the Books gets fifth grade students excited about reading. A lively academic competition, Battle of the Books improves reading comprehension, builds vocabulary, and teaches teamwork and good sportsmanship. The 2015 competition runs concurrently at Howard, Mt. Hebron, Oakland Mills, River Hill and Wilde Lake high schools.
Teams of five students and one adult coach each read the same 16 pre-assigned books over four months. Selected by HCLS instructors and HCPSS media specialists, titles include a wide range of reading levels and subjects. Thanks to generous sponsors, all teams receive a set of books. In addition to reading the books, teams choose a team name then dress accordingly.
During the "battle" (a 50-question exam), a moderator asks questions that relate to one of the following: a direct quote from one of the book characters; a statement about something that happens in the book; a passage taken directly from the book; details about an illustration or picture. Winning teams receive prizes.
