I am lying here

Frozen like a rabbit

Trying to outwit the fox

I dare not move

In case you see me

I saw you on the roadside

I couldn’t get away

Fast enough

My only hope is to lie still

And hope you go past

In your frustration

And you don’t scent me like a bloodhound

Because then I am surely lost

I can’t explain it

But when I saw you

Instinct took over

You were human

And then you were not

For this to happen in the daytime

Chills me to the bone

How long do I wait here

Until I start to rot?

This image was taken on the road to Litlington village in East Sussex, UK. This road has entranced me all my life and I am constantly drawn back to it. The atmosphere can change, depending on the weather and the season, the time of day, and perhaps just because you happen to be there.

At times, despite appearances, the atmosphere is not benign. There are entity's far older than what we can imagine still tethered to this place, that cannot let go. In a sense we are the trespassers. I felt I needed to leave the roadside that day, so I quickly went into the wheat field.

I have chosen to pair this image with ‘Those We Don’t Speak Of’ by James Newton Howard from the film ‘The Village’ by M. Night Shyamalan. Please click below on the link for this wonderful music.

I recently saw two sides of the Black Skimmers. A mother's instinct which is to aggressively protect its chick and than the dark side , where they would go after the chicks of other skimmers.

Pose and Set made by me

Our resident, birdseed eating moose is back. After a few weeks of being gone - she strode down our driveway as if she owned the place, plunked down under the birdfeeder, and began scoffing up all of the seed that was tossed out by the woodpeckers. With subzero temperatures, and heavy snow predicted - I expect she will be hanging around for a while. Now Doc and I will have to keep our eyes open when we leave the cabin.

I am a little perplexed though . . . when I originally took photos of this moose and her love of birdseed - there were no buds on her head. Now I can plainly see two prominent bumps where antlers start to form. In the moose family only males sprout antlers, so . . . the question is - bull or cow? Or could this be two different moose with the same affinity to birdseed? Maybe time will tell - or I'll get a peek at the underparts.

After decades of observing wildlife - I don't chalk an animal's behavior up to "instinct," as much as I do to "memory", and yes - a superior intelligence. I know I can't roam through the vast forests of our state for weeks, and then with no navigational aid, find my way right back to one particular spot on the map. But this moose did just that.

This Mountain Hare displays it's survival instincts by selecting a sheltered spot to keep out the wind.

We finally saw light this morning and I couldn't resist shooting into it. My own worst instincts because it's so hard to edit but I had to post it and move on. Accepting the flaws but loving the light.

she doesn’t announce herself. she watches. she waits. the cold doesn’t bother her. it keeps things honest. hunger isn’t desperation, it’s clarity. she moves when it makes sense, not when it’s expected. no pack. no performance. what survives isn’t luck. it’s restraint.

she’s not lost. she’s instinctual.

Hiding from my camera.

Some animals use their colors and surroundings to hide.

How do they do this? Instinct? Now, who put this instinct in them? Have you ever thought of this?
