A seemingly random abstract, these are in fact the displaced scales and hairs from the leg of a mosquito, [at least I think it was a mosquito flying round me - splat x!!], magnified 400 times. Even under a cover slip on the slide there are out of focus levels of them as the available depth of field is tiny.

I was given a basic microscope for my 8th birthday which gave me a closer look at life. I used it for years. Some time back I bought a low power binocular scope. Now, after all these years, I have bought a compound microscope I can use with the camera. I hope to find, photograph and share some of the wonderful structures and patterns underlying the natural world. There really is a lot to see and discover down there - down in the depths of the minute.

In this series of images you can see how flexible this Robber Fly's "neck" is. She can turn her head to track anything flying by and quickly assess whether it's potential prey or not.

Note: an insect's "neck" region, whch connects the head to the thorax is called a cervix or veracervix.
