"Chafer the Gaffer"

I'm the garden chafer,

the metallic green gaffer,

i'll buzz and spray,

so keep out my way,

i'll trample your pansies,

spoiling all your fancies,

i'm big, i'm green, seldom seen,

i'm chafer the gaffer know what I mean! 🐞

"Gaffer = Boss"

Metallic green rose chafer beetle, amid the blossoms, looking resplendent, they are considered a pest and can decimate flora, still they do look impressive like mini shining tanks.

They nibble pollen and sip nectar, but these little chaps

decimated my roses last year so they can definitely cause damage to the gardeners pride and joy!

A word of warning don't try grabbing them or you may get squirted, they have a nasty defence.

Of course they fly too buzzing about like small airborne tanks,

marvellous insects really, but the larvae are really ugly .... lets not go there! 😁

Metallic - Insect

This is going to be my choice for Macro Mondays this week I chose Metallic from the first five words and Insect from the second five words, hopefully concluding with ....

Metallic Insect

A green metallic beetle, a "Green Chafer Beetle."

Two butts on display here. These two hoverflies seemed to be having a dispute over this bind weed flower. I think these are Syrphus ribesii

Even in 2013 I occasionally got some good photos. It was along about then that I started going out to photograph more often and it became a "serious" hobby.

Halictidae is the second-largest family of bees. They are commonly called sweat bees (especially the smaller species), as they are often attracted to perspiration. Usually dark-colored (frequently brown or black) and often metallic, halictids are found in various sizes, colors and patterns. Several species are all or partly green and a few are red, purple, or blue. Only females have the ability to deliver a sting. Due to their non-aggressive nature, they are only likely to sting if disturbed; the sting is minor.

A lovely contrast between the soft blue of the delicate butterfly and the hard, crushed stone of the railway ballast.

It's always a thrill to see these micro bees in my gardens, often mistaken for flies due to their tiny size, their colour and their erratic flight. They don't keep still for long! There were around eight of them circling this Nemesia plant.

It is very important to me to have a garden that supports them, especially in regard the competition they endure from the introduced European honey bees.

I was intrigued to read in 2020, of research at Queensland University here in Australia that had shown certain species of stingless bees are able to convert sucrose to trehalulose (a

disaccharide) in their gut - the honey produced contains up to 44% trehalulose and is low on the Glycaemic Index.

This research adds weight to what our First Nation peoples have long been saying, that native honey is good for humans.

The Horsefly compond eyes are so majical to me.

What would Halloween be without a spider pic. Unfortunately this isn't a normal Halloween. The US CDC has issued a guidance on how to celebrate the holiday safely. Check it out and have a safe and happy Halloween.

Everything about this shrub is soft — the felted grey leaves, the buttery yellow of each little daisy. And right in the middle of it, this bumblebee going about her business like the whole plant was built just for her. Honestly, it might have been.

Eyed elater oculatus can reach a length of about 25–45 millimetres (1.0–1.8 in). The pronotum exhibits a large oval patch of darker scales, framed in white, on each side - the common name of the beetle derives from this feature. It is also capable of suddenly catapulting itself out of danger by releasing the energy stored by a click mechanism. The adults do not eat much but their diet consists of nectar and plant juice.

Jewel beetles known as metallic wood-boring beetles because of their glossy, iridescent colors. The family is among the largest of the beetles, with some 15,500 species known in 775 genera.
