🇩🇪 Beschreibung (Deutsch):

🇬🇧 Description (English):

The Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio) is a small but striking songbird from the shrike family. Males are easily identified by their black “bandit mask,” grey head, and reddish-brown back. This species prefers semi-open habitats with hedgerows, thorn bushes, and field edges, where it hunts large insects and occasionally small vertebrates.

The bird’s German name, Neuntöter (“nine killer”), comes from an old folk tale: It was believed that the shrike would impale exactly nine prey animals on thorns before eating the first one. While the number is myth, the behavior is real – Red-backed Shrikes often store food by impaling it on sharp twigs or thorns, a habit that earned them the name “butcher birds” in English.

As a species typical of traditional agricultural landscapes, the Red-backed Shrike is now protected in many regions due to habitat loss.

The light was fading fast and i didn't have my flash with me so I put up the iso and hoped for the best, quite pleased it came out so well.

Springtime is here and we took a visit to the Callaway Gardens butterfly facility.

I am no specialist on insects so I don't know which spider and which fly. The fly didn't make it though

Insects possess segmented bodies supported by an exoskeleton, a hard outer covering made mostly of chitin. The segments of the body are organized into three distinctive but interconnected units, or tagmata; a head, a thorax, and an abdomen. The head supports a pair of sensory antennae, a pair of compound eyes, one to three simple eyes ("ocelli") and three sets of variously modified appendages that form the mouthparts. The thorax has six segmented legs (one pair each for the prothorax, mesothorax and the metathorax segments making up the thorax) and two or four wings (if present in the species). The abdomen (made up of eleven segments some of which may be reduced or fused) has most of the digestive, respiratory, excretory and reproductive internal structures.

A #pollinator is the biotic agent (vector) that moves #pollen from the male anthers of a flower to the female stigma of a #flower to accomplish fertilization or 'syngamy' of the female gametes in the ovule of the #flower by the male gametes from the pollen grain.

Thank you for all your kind comments and faves.

A fairly pleasing outcome using a compact camera. Then a little bit of help with Adobe Lightroom and some cropping

A Macro Mondays submission on the topic "Vowel", i.e. the subject must start with a vowel, in this case Insect. The Robber Fly is a ruthless predator which catches smaller insects in flight, then devours them.
