Very early mornings are the only time at our house when it’s truly quiet—no human noises. It feels like a wonderful sort of liminal space between the noisy chaos of the rest of the day. I soak it in as much as possible and dream of a time when we can live in a house far from human sounds, surrounded only by nature’s song.

Two Japanese beetles were engaged in a round of love making when the third (above) tried to get in on the action. He was quickly rebuffed. Sigma 150mm macro and ring flash.
The compound eye is quite prominent. The two tiny protruberances in front of the head could be antennae or light sensors.
The protruberances are antennae. The insect also has two tiny ocelli or simple eyes on the top of the head.
