La esfinge colibrí (Macroglossum stellatarum) es una especie de lepidóptero ditrisio de la familia Sphingidae. Vive en el sur de Europa, incluyendo la península ibérica, norte de África y centro de Asia, India e Indochina.Suele confundírseles frecuentemente con esfinges del género Hemaris de Norteamérica. Recibe el nombre por su vuelo y forma de alimentación, que se asemejan a los del colibrí.

The hummingbird sphinx (Macroglossum stellatarum) is a species of lepidoptera ditrisio of the Sphingidae family. They live in southern Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula, North Africa and Central Asia, India and Indochina, and are often confused with sphinxes of the genus Hemaris of North America. It receives its name from its flight and way of feeding, which resemble those of the hummingbird.

The vagrant darter (Sympetrum vulgatum) is a European dragonfly. The species takes its English name from its habit of occasionally appearing as a rare vagrant north of its normal range. However, it is likely to be under-recorded because it is very similar to the common darter (S. striolatum).

The species is common in central and northeast Europe. It breeds in standing water.

I appreciate all those lovely little insects out there, living their lives happily oblivious of our activities. Yet once in awhile we can see that perhaps it is we humans that are missing all of their artistic efforts.

Shot on my first outing to photograph insects and butterflies. These shots were taken on Cotley Hill on the edge of Salisbury Palin

A Common Green Darner (Anax junius) male flies it's route in front of the willows at the Merced National Wildlife Refuge.
