Comparison between DXO PhotoLab Elite v5 vs V6

Settings of the photo : RAW - F6.3 - 1/6400s - ISO 1250 - 600mm

Presentation of 4 results with a 100% cropped view

With a 100% cropped view, There is still blur movement because 1/6400s is not enought to completly freeze the bird in flight.

Photo 1 = Raw result with automatique settings of PhotoLAB v5 and DeepPrime denoising feature

Photo 2 = Raw result with automatique settings of PhotoLAB v6 and DeepPrime XD denoising feature

=> As you can see on the head, Deeprime XD is much much more acurate for small details.

Photo 3 = PhotoLab v6 + sharpen optic correction increased

Photo 4 = PhotoLab v5 + Topaz AI Denoise with CLEAR and Low Low settings

=> Photo 3 is now almost as good as What I get with CLEAR on sharpness. Hugde improvement from DXO side !!

To conclude : PhotoLab v6 Elite version with DeepPrime XD is an huge improvement from the v5 for small details.

ps: Currently DXO does an offer for the black friday, full elite version at 149E vs 219E and upgrade from v5 at 69E vs 99E.

Foto 3 = PhotoLab v6 + correzione ottica sharpen aumentata

Don't you hate it when you come home from a shoot and can't choose between your best images from the night?

After some promising clouds appeared on my favorite Santa Cruz webcam, Jave, Diego, and I decided to meet up at 2 mile beach to see what's what. I got there later than those guys did and headed north from where they had set up to see if I could find something interesting on the low tide-exposed sand. This neat little rock caught my eye and I went for the cliche, but beautiful, water-streaking-around-foreground-rock shot. Only later did I learn that Jave had placed this rock here earlier as a backup in case he needed to find a comp. :) So a huge assist on this shot goes to Jave for placing this rock here for me.

Anyway, I had a hard time choosing between my favorite two shots, so I posted them both. Even though I like the color variation in the lower shot more, ultimately the one up above won out due its diffuse orange glow, the smoothness of the water in the f/g, and the interest of the waves in the midground.

Which do you guys prefer?

Thanks for looking. Your input, comments, and faves are always appreciated. Happy Friday!

Lee 3-stop soft GND Filter, handheld

Post-Processing (Ok, this one was a real bitch to process. I converted the same RAW file three times to get tonal values I liked for the sky, the waves/wash, and the foreground rock. I probably could have achieved the same result on a single conversion using the selective color control points in Nikon Capture NX2, but I was processing under the influence of a big, beefy, burger-induced food coma and ended up doing things the not-smart way.)

----------------------

In Raw Converter (Nikon Capture NX2):

- Leveled slightly askew horizon

- Global contrast for added pop

- Slightly darkened and added contrast to the sky to add oomph

- Local contrast adjustments to water streaks to add definition

In Photoshop:

- Noise reduction of all three converted TIF files via Neat Image

- Hand blend of 3 TIF files to get a master composite

- 30 minutes of clone stamping to get rid of water droplets and spray smudges :(

- Slight contrast boost (via curves adjustment layer) to sky

- Luminosity mask to add brightness, contrast, and shine to foreground rock only)

Then, since I originally had my GND filter held up a little bit too high and the sun's reflection in the water was going nuclear, I converted another raw file with the shine toned way way down, then selectively painted it in over the top.

Glarg, the processing on this one took awhile, but now I am very pleased with the results.

The Dortmunder concert hall is famous because of its fantastic acoustics.

I wear a T-shirt with this cool image on it that is a combination of Jane and the famous painting Starry Night. I'm sharing the image now on Flickr so more people can enjoy it.

This was created by combining several prompts, a seed, and an image of Starry Night as input into an AI tool called Midjourney.

Bode Museum - Berlin, Germany (HDR)

Watch the Before-and-After Comparison to see where this photo comes from!

On January 6th, you gave me my 200,000th view. Time to say "Thank you all so very much for your support and your interest in my photos!"

The story of this photo:

This shot was taken earlier this year. It depicts the "Bode Museum", one of five internationally renowned museums on the Museum Island in Berlin. If you ever visit Berlin, this is one of the place to go, right at the heart of the city, not far from the cathedral. Even if you are not interested in the collections of art and historic items, the buildings alone are worth the visit.

Enjoy!

Take a look at my "HDR Cookbook"! It contains some more information on my techniques.

How it was shot:

> Handheld [details]

> Three exposures (0, -2, +2 ev) autobracketed and merged to get and HDR

> Camera: Nikon D90

> Lens: Sigma 10-20mm F3,5 EX DC HSM

> Details can be found here

How it was tonemapped:

> Preparation: developed the RAW files with ACR mainly in order to reduce the CA [details]

> Resulting TIF images were then used as input to Photomatix

> Tone-mapping: Photomatix Pro 4.0 (Detail Enhancer)

How it was post-processed:

> Post-processing was done in Photoshop

> Topaz Adjust on the entire image to get back the colors and the details [details]

> Topaz Denoise on the entire image (more aggressively on the sky) [details]

> Topaz Infocus on the entire image for sharpening

> Selective color layer on the sky to get a more intense blue tones

> Saturation layer on the sky (master, blues)

> Levels layer on the sky (brightening)

> Levels layer on the clouds (more contrast)

> Saturation layer on the buildings (yellows and toned down the reds)

> Levels layer on the buildings (more contrast)

> Curves layer in selected areas of the museum (more contrast)

> Levels layer on the dome (more contrast)

> Saturation layer on the dome (master, reds)

> Saturation layer on the water (master)

> Photo filter layer on selected areas of the water (cyan)

> Photo filter layer on selected areas of the water (orange)

> Curves layer on the water to enhance the reflective look

> Sharpening using the high-pass filter [details]

> Vignette effect using a masked fill layer [details]

We (myself, kristin, and 10 others) took a limo to see coldplay earlier this month - which was my first time seeing them, and an amazing show.

Lucky for us the limo's head unit (CD player) had a USB input that could be used with a thumb drive or iPod. Even luckier for us was that someone had an iPod USB cable in their bag! Everything worked out and we were able to listen to the silver nano (that I keep in my backpack for rainy days) throughout the entire trip.

A four-input audio and video selector from back when analog composite video was under fire and the once-mighty Radio Shack (then renamed RadioShack) was on a path to irrelevance.

I bought this selector switch for film festival use back when we we had to juggle multiple video formats, in addition to 35mm film. I stopped using it after the move to digital cinema and Blu-Ray Discs, letting it gather dust, awaiting eventual donation or recycling.

During its heyday Neidpath had four grain elevators, two of which still stand derelict today. Today, they look different. A wind storm took off the top of one of them, and damaged the other in 2021.

This image was the first I shot of the Neidpath duo. It means alot to me as I did a great deal of research to find them from an image of them that I saw here on Flickr. I enjoyed photographing Neidpath that day back in August of 2015. I’ve not returned since. Not that I don’t want to, life has just got in the way.

Along with Neidpath I shot roughly 30 plus elevators in 4 days or so. I had caught the bug. Since then I have traveled from BC to MB capturing many images of Grain Elevators, Ukrainian Churches, Railway Stations, Water Towers, Ghost Towns and various other structures on the Canadian Prairie.

My photographic journey started around 2009 and I have traveled many miles doing what I love to do. 15 years later I am not sure how much longer I can do this. Will 2024 be the last year I am able to get in the Jeep and drive thousands of kilometers across this great country? I’d like to hope that I can continue, but I’m not getting any younger.

So, where am I going with this. Well, right now I am in the preparation and planning stage of a major project. This will be a 365 Photo Project. A project of subjects that I have not yet photographed. My list of prospective subjects is growing, but nowhere near complete, yet. I hope to be on the road sometime around mid-May and have the last photo taken around mid to end of Oct. 365 photos of different subjects in 6 months is very doable if I plan it right. The key is to NOT retrace previous journeys and re-photograph something that I have already taken a shot of.

So why I am posting this verbal diarrhea you may ask? Well, I have a list of close to 2,000 subjects I’d like to photograph, but thought maybe I could enlist my Flickr friends to help me choose which ones to photograph.

The other part of the project could be for me to produce copies of my images in formats such as Calendars, Postcards, Christmas Cards and a Coffee Table Book. Lastly, I would love to build a website to display my work on, as well as Flickr. That work would come after my journey to photograph the subject matter this summer. This is something I have been thinking about for many years, and I feel now is the time to just get it done.

My camera kit has expanded recently and I am looking at acquiring a few other pieces to allow for different perspectives and compositions. More on that in the future.

So what have I photographed so far. Well, this photostream is a good star to see that, and you can view my other photostream here to see more… The Bear Den Photography

So, what do you think? Would you have any suggestions? It would be great to hear your thoughts and opinions on this. I look forward to your input. Anywhere from AB to MB would be good.

PS: One last question? Which format do you like to see images displayed in? Colour, black and white, landscape format, original format, or square format? Or a combination of all of these?

“Working with art videos can be very isolating.

I was feeling the need to exchange ideas with other

artists with similar interests. I’m also very curious

about other cultures and I believe that the mix of all

these people with different backgrounds is what

makes the project so rich. “

Kika Nicolela (project coordinator)

ECVP v1 is an international video collaboration project where 37 artists, including myself, from 16 countries around the world have created 9 videos in a total running time of 82 minutes.

The film has been created by group of individual and successful artists, many of who have not met previously, responding to an invitation by Kika Nicolela, an

award-winning filmmaker from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Nicolela facilitated the project through the international social networking site for artists, curators and art critics on

Art review.com following discussions at Video Artists Forum.

The project was inspired by the classic Surrealists' drawing method of the same name, Cadavre Exquis, in which a paper is folded so that each contributor sees only a small portion of the preceding artist's work. The ECVP participants created minute-long video art segments in response to the final ten seconds of the previous filmmaker's work. Each participant was then asked to incorporate these seconds into their piece, creating transitions as they pleased, until everyone's vision was threaded together into a final "corpse". In this global experiment, artists have created and enriched the final production with their unique personal style and input, following each others prompt as a source of inspiration.

While working in collaboration, the ECVP group is in search for new modes of expression in the development of video art, building a new concept through utilizing the characteristics of participatory platforms and new communication technology. ECVP Volume 1 has been screened in festivals and galleries throughout the world,

including Brazil, Sweden, Germany, Greece, South Africa, Canada, Mexico, and the US.

About

Something different ;)

The shot

Standard 3 exposure HDR (-2,0,2EV) on a tripod using the Sigma 10mm Fisheye lens.

Photoshop

Curves for extra contrast.

A bit of dodging to accentuate the light.

A bit of extra saturation on yellow and red.

And the day turned to fright - Shpongle

An international team of scientists have used data collected by the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope to detect a molecule known as the methyl cation (CH3+) for the first time, located in the protoplanetary disc surrounding a young star. They accomplished this feat with a cross-disciplinary expert analysis, including key input from laboratory spectroscopists. The vital role of CH3+ in interstellar carbon chemistry has been predicted since the 1970s, but Webb’s unique capabilities have finally made observing it possible — in a region of space where planets capable of accommodating life could eventually form.

This image is NIRCam’s view of the Orion Bar region studied by the team of astronomers. Bathed in harsh ultraviolet light from the stars of the Trapezium Cluster, it is an area of intense activity, with star formation and active astrochemistry. This made it a perfect place to study the exact impact that ultraviolet radiation has on the molecular makeup of the discs of gas and dust that surround new stars. The radiation erodes the nebula’s gas and dust in a process known as photoevaporation; this creates the rich tapestry of cavities and filaments that fill the view. The radiation also ionises the molecules, causing them to emit light — not only does this create a beautiful vista, it also allows astronomers to study the molecules using the spectrum of their emitted light obtained with Webb’s MIRI and NIRSpec instruments.

The two very large, bright stars are two of the three stars in the θ² Orionis system — the Trapezium Cluster is also known as θ¹ Orionis. The brightest star here, θ² Orionis A, is surrounded by particularly bright and red puffs of dust, which are reflecting the star’s light towards Earth. Its great brightness — it is visible with the naked eye — is due to the fact that θ² Orionis A is itself a ternary system made of three closely bound bright stars.

There are more proplyds visible in this image than just d203-506 — the Orion Nebula is replete with such new stars. In the very top left, a tiny star is visible within a long, dusty cocoon. This globule has formed from the star’s protoplanetary disc, as the disc is broken down by the energetic radiation of the Trapezium Cluster. Around the globule, a round shockwave is strikingly visible moving through the gas of the Orion Nebula.

[Image description: A nebula made of many layers of cloudy, colourful material. The top-left side of the image is brightly lit, filled with wispy, thin material in pale shades of pink and blue. A thick bar of denser, cloudier material crosses diagonally at the bottom right. It begins as orange and grows darker and sparser down to the corner. Two very bright stars, with very long diffraction spikes, lie in this sparse area.]

Usual dire March weather punctuated with light showers, but probably the last time I will ever see a large logo blue grid on the mainline.

With 66789 and 66750 stabled on a rake of Autoballasters in the former Marshalling yard sidings behind me, the very rare meeting of 2 BR blue liveried large logo machines briefly occurred.

The early arrival of this service is explained by no consist in TRUST and when it eventually did get input, it transpired that the consist was too long for Staines Goods Loop and couldn't be held at Byfleet Junction either due to a clash with the path of 4Y19 so had to run through without stopping.

I tried to convey a feeling of drama in this image--I'm not sure if I succeeded (?) I was a little torn between the vast colour shift between the rushing water and the sky but decided to upload regardless and try and get some input/constructive comments on the overall presentation.
