This trip rattled a lot of things. Some aren't going to be on the next trip. Others will.
Losers
Mesh jackets
I'm just starting to feel like, when you are moving at a decent clip, especially in the southwest where it's so dry, a few vents will move plenty of air. The mesh may well be hotter when it's 95 degrees, and then when it gets cold you can't just zip some things up. You can wear the liner, but then the outer mesh doesn't provide any warmth. Maybe it's good for the city, but I think my next trip I'll get something non-mesh.
Bad chain adjustments
A local dealer adjusted the chain. I didn't notice until I got to Utah that the rear wheel wasn't aligned right, and the rear sprocket was getting a weird deep wear pattern. Not really a problem for the trip, but the sprocket is toast and the chain is starting to loosen after only 5000 miles.
Ipods
My 80GB ipod video started flaking out a bit before the trip. It's not very old. It was very expensive. Hassle. I noticed my old 20GB seemed to work alright. Unfortunately as the trip progressed the battery started flaking. The things are so expensive, but I just can't get away from them. I want to be free, but it keeps pulling me back in.

Although the thing doesn't appear to have had the CLA it was billed to have had, it feels great to use. I'll pony up for a real CLA and it will be happy.

Despite the sprocket issue, and also a headlight mount shook loose and then the bulb died, the bike as a whole did great. Gets 60mpg without too much trouble. Snow storms to desert heat, pavement, dirt, washboard, sand, gravel....the better rider I get, the more the more the bike seems a step ahead of me.
Frog Toggs
This rain gear isn't motorcycle specific - which would make me suspicious, as on a bike you have rain coming at an angle, at high speed, so usually things not designed for it wouldn't work. I just had the pants, and they were great. Not having to stop at a gas station and get half naked in the bathroom to put on an inner liner when it rained was the main motivation.

Johannesburg Inner City is supposedly a dangerous place. I am not sure why, but i did conform with the directions of my black driver who took me around the place and kept the car windows closed. We didn't stop at all and all pictures taken within the Inner City limits were taken through the closed window of a car on the move.
I must say, though, I didn't see anything dangerous outside. I saw ruins of buildings and even some ruins of people, I saw poor people going here and there, but I did not feel threatened... It was a Sunday morning, lots of people were on the streets and on the sidewalks, but I saw no strange transaction, no drugs changing hands, no weapons flashed.
I may be wrong but I saw nothing that might have put my life at risk, if at some point I chose to get out of the car and take a walk around this place, as I so very much wanted to do!
Camels seen roaming near the highway. We were very excited when we first saw them. Later, we were to see more of them.
I did an assignment for a researcher @ Vrije Universiteit. I shot 138 students in one day; Niels (the other photographer) did the other half. It was an action packed day with some technical troubles to overcome, but we (researchers included) rocked it!

The Inner Harbour - Budock Creek - usually there are more boats here! There's a pub at the end of the creek! The Famous Red Barrel although I always knew it as the Commercial!!
Out for tha warm summer day iat the inner harbor in Baltimore. The boats were extremely busy, in fact, the harbor was kind of congested with paddle boat traffic.

After the visit to the Fleet Air Arm Museum, in the afternoon, we next went to Lytes Cary. The manor and gardens are run by the National Trust.
Lytes Cary is a manor house with associated chapel and gardens near Charlton Mackrell and Somerton in Somerset, England. The property, owned by the National Trust, has parts dating to the 14th century, with other sections dating to the 15th, 16th, 18th, and 20th centuries. "Yet all parts blend to perfection with one another and with the gentle sunny landscape that surrounds them," comments Nikolaus Pevsner. The House is listed as Grade I by English Heritage.
The chapel predates the existing house, having been built around 1343, and functioned as a chantry chapel, where masses could be said for the souls of the family, both living and dead. The great hall was added in the 15th century and the Oriel Room in the 16th. Various renovations were undertaken during the 16th and 17th centuries after which the house fell into disrepair with the north range being demolished by the early 19th century. In 1907 Sir Walter Jenner of the Jenner baronets bought the house and restored it in a period style, furnishing it with fine 17th century and 18th century oak furniture, antique tapestries and fabrics modelled after medieval textiles, along with historic and period paintings. On his death in 1948 he left the house to the National Trust.
The gardens are listed as Grade II on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England. The original 17th-century gardens have disappeared. However, the Jenners laid them out in an Arts and Crafts style with a series of 'rooms', which are separated from each other by high, neatly clipped box and yew hedges. These are complemented by ponds and walks in and between each of the 'rooms'.

Manor House. C14 origins, mostly C15,C16 and early C20, this last being restoration and extension by C.E Ponting for
Sir Walter Jenner. Local lias stone ashlar with Ham stone dressings; stone slate roofs between coped gables with
finials, some plain clay tile roofs on later work; stone chimney stacks. Two storeys with attic, complex plan around
small central courtyard; the north east and south east ranges representing the earlier work; the north west range being
a largely C18 farmhouse, and the south west range was added after 1907. Entrance on north east elevation, which is of 6
bays: bay 1 is a gable from which the chapel, of C14, projects: this has a 3-light east window with reticulated tracery
in a pointed arch, flanked by angled corner buttresses, with a quatrefoil plaque above; matching 2 light window but
with flat arched head and label on north return, with pointed arched doorway with poppyhead finial to label; bays 2 and
4 are projecting gables; bay 2 has chamfer moulded mullioned window with 4-centre arched heads to-lights, and incised
spandrils, a plain 4-light without label below, and a 1+3+1 angled oriel window above, with stone slate roof; bay 3 has
a single, tall 3-light window; bay-4 is the gabled porch, with moulded shallow cambered arched doorways, and above a
matching 1+3+1-light oriel and gable finial with heraldic figures; bays 5 and 6 are the taller farmhouse building which
has matching mullioned windows to basement, and above casement windows with leaded-panes set under brick-panels and
elliptical brick arches. South east garden elevation of 9 bays:-bay 1 an end gable, with 4-light mullioned window the
post 1907 extension bays 2 and 3 have similar windows with labels to lower windows: bays 4 and 8 the earlier section;
3-light hollow chamfered mullioned windows to bays 4, 5 and 7, with 2 and single light windows bay 8; bay 6 has square
window of 1533, 2 storeys with crenellated parapet over pierced quatrefoil ornament, 2+4+2-lights; between windows of
this bay is featured the arms of John Lyte, builder: bay 9 represents the Chapel, with window to match that on north.
The other outer elevations of lesser import; the courtyard elevations relate generally to outside. The chapel has an
arch-braced-collar truss roof, and has wood fittings of 1631, including the communion rail and a rear screen. The porch
opens into the hall, c1450, also with arched-braced-collar trusses, with double purlins, and cusped curved windbraces,
as roof; cornice of pierced qvatrefoils; a C15 fireplace, but the windows and oriel, of 2 storeys, are C16 additions.
In corner between old ranges, projecting into courtyard is the staircase. In the south east range the parlour,
remodelled in 1533, but with Jacobean-panelling and lonic pilasters, and good chimney piece; above is the great
chamber, with barrel ceiling with geometrical plaster decpration, also of 1533 and a rare survival. The 1907 range said
to incorparate carvings from a Wren City Church, possibly St Benet's, Gracechurch. History and building well

Inner courtyard
4th of July fireworks over Baltimore's Inner Harbor last year, seen through ship's rigging. Seems like the appropriate time to finally upload this.
While in California The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited Inner-City Arts, an organization that uses arts and performances to give inner city children an oasis of calm, fun and learning. While there The Duke and Duchess met with children participating in the art programmes.
