Bituminous coal from the Cretaceous of Utah, USA.
Coal is a carbon-rich, biogenic sedimentary rock. It forms by the burial and alteration of organic matter from fossil land plants that lived in ancient swamps. Coal starts out as peat. With increasing burial and diagenetic alteration, peat becomes lignite coal, sub-bituminous coal, and then bituminous coal. Bituminous coals tend to break and weather in a blocky fashion, are relatively sooty to the touch, and are harder and heavier than lignite coal (but still relatively soft and lightweight). Discernible plant fossil fragments may be present on bituminous coal bedding planes - sometimes in abundance. Bituminous coals commonly have irregular patches of shiny, glassy-textured organic matter (vitrain).

Info. from public signage at Wittenberg University's Geology Department (Springfield, Ohio, USA):
Origin of Coal
Coal is formed from accumulated vegetation that grew in peat-forming swamps on broad lowlands that were near sea level. Cyclothems indicate that the land must have been at a "critical level" since the change from marine to non-marine sediments shows that the seas periodically encroached upon the land.
Formation of Coal
The change from plant debris to coal involves biochemical action producing partial decay, preserval of this material from further decay, and later dynamochemical processes. The biochemical changes involve attack by bacteria which liberate volatile constituents, and the preserval of the residual waxes and resins in the bottom of the swamps where the water is too toxic for the decay-promoting bacteria to live. The accumulated material forms "peat bogs". The dynamochemical process involves further chemical reactions produced by the increased pressure and temperature brought about by the weight of sediment that is deposited on top of it. These reactions are also ones in which the volatile constituents are driven off.
Rank of Coal
The different types of coal are commonly referred to in terms of rank. From lowest upward, they are peat (actually not a coal), lignite, bituminous, and anthracite. The rank of the coal is the result of the different amounts of pressure and time involved in producing the coal.
Bituminous
Bituminous coal is a dense, dark, brittle, banded coal that is well jointed and breaks into cubical or prismatic blocks and does not disintegrate upon exposure to air. Dull and bright bands and smooth and hackly layers are evident. It ignites easily, burns with a smoky yellow flame, has low moisture contnet, medium volatile content, and fixed carbon and heating content is high. It is the most used and most desired coal in the world for industrial uses.
In the United States, the Northern Appalachian fields lead in production, followed by the interior fields of the Midwest.
----------------------------------
This sample comes from Utah's Bronco Mine, which reportedly started in the 1880s. The coal ranks as high-volatile C bituminous coal, which means it gives off less heat than high-volatile A or B bituminous coals. The former gives off about 11,500 British thermal units (Btu) of heat per pound of coal. The latter two give off about 14,000 and 13,000 Btu per pound, respectively.

August 2012 Market Update
The national housing market continues to recover, indicated by a balanced supply of inventory and increasing home prices across the country. NAR President Moe Veissi states, “The very favorable market conditions are helping to unleash a pent-up demand, which is why housing supplies have tightened and are supporting growth in home prices.”
However, rising demand has led to tight supplies of affordable homes for first-time home buyers, who now only represent 32% of purchasers. NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun claims “a healthy market share of first-time buyers would be about 40%, so these figures show that tight inventory in the lower price ranges, along with unnecessarily tight credit standards, are holding back entry-level activity.”
Regardless, with the market heating up and mortgage rates continuing to hit record-lows, now is one of the most favorable times in history to buy a home.
Home Sales
in millions
While home sales declined 5.4% from last month to 4.37 million units, year-over-year sales increased 4.5%. Distressed homes (which include short sales and foreclosures that traditionally sell for 15%–20% less on average compared to non distressed homes) allotted for 25% of June sales, which is unchanged from May, but is 30% below year-ago sales. However, despite the declining levels seen from past years, it is still expected that distressed property sales will still be largely present and higher than the historic average.
Home Price
in thousands
Shrinking inventory and a decline in distressed properties on the market continue to drive home prices up. The median home price rose 5% from last month, and 7.9% compared to a year earlier to $189,400. This is the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year price gains, which hasn’t been seen since February to May of 2006, a period of peak performance in the housing market.
Inventory- Month's Supply
in months
Housing inventory fell another 3.2% in June to a current 2.39 million homes available for sale, a 6.6-month supply. This marks the seventh consecutive month of inventory at a 6-month supply, the threshold for a balanced market, giving both buyers and sellers an equal advantage. Movement out of the three-year buyer’s market is imperative toward reaching a full-scale housing market recovery.

Interest Rates
Mortgage rates at or around 3.53% continue to drop and boost home affordability. These are some of the lowest rates on record since 1971, increasing the urgency to buy now.

Topics For Home Owners, Buyers & Sellers
With many markets heating up, home prices are rising and inventory is shrinking. This high market activity puts sellers at a strong advantage, but to ensure that your property sells quickly and for the highest price, here are some tips to turn that “For Sale” sign into a “Sold” sign:
List at market price. Even though the market is in your favor as a seller, incorrectly priced homes will not attract buyers. If you list your home at market price, your home will be on the market for fewer days, you are twice as likely to have multiple offers, and your chances of fewer price reductions and your sales price being close to your list price are much greater.
Condition is key. Keeping your home in excellent condition includes enhancing your curb appeal by landscaping your front yard, as well as making necessary updates such as painting and roof repair. 93% of homes that were in better condition received offers close to their list price.
Stage your home. Many buyers prefer to see a depersonalized home, devoid of the seller’s personal items, so that they can picture themselves in it. Staging can be as simple as rearranging furniture or uncluttering a room. The cost of it can be minimal compared to the benefits of more showings and, ultimately, a higher asking price.

About 'Flowers Are Red'
Flowers Are Red is a song written and sung by Harry Chapin. The song was released on his 1978 album Living Room Suite.
The song tells the story of a little boy who on the first day of school started drawing pictures of flowers using many different colors. The teacher tells him that he's coloring the flowers all wrong and that he should paint them red and green, "the way they always have been seen." The boy disagrees and continues to color them from his imagination until the teacher punishes him by standing him in a corner. Finally, the little boy gives in and tells the teacher that "flowers are red, and green leaves are green." When he goes to a different school, he continues mechanically painting flowers red and green, to the dismay of his new, kind teacher.
In the live concert versions, Chapin extended the song's ending to: "There still must be a way to have our children say..." before featuring the little boy's chorus again and bringing the song to a better conclusion. A version of this is featured on his album Legends of the Lost and Found.

I found one!!!
A photographer who increased the angles and distances much more than the master H. Lefort…
Can you imagine?
Just take a look at the anaglyph…
Jean Tongue, on the banks of the Seine, Île de Saint-Ouen, a suburb near Paris.
We often say watercolor, a bit like any coloring, but here, it's watercolor well diluted with water. Which produces unusual colors. I don't know if he was the one who cut these prints?
Not very skilled at…
Nickname: John Tongue.
Started his career in 1860, as a wet collodion photographer in the studio.
Also took stereoscopic views, convicted in 1861 for obscene photography. Still working in 1864 at 10 Boulevard Bonne Nouvelle, Paris.
Sales branch on Rue de la Lune, Paris.
Partnered in a studio with Joseph François from 1864 to 1868.

The End
To be honest, after so many years, I just didn't see it coming.
My limited education and poor grammar, coupled with unfashionable dressing, always seemed to trouble and upset her.
I just don't know how I could have shown her more love, along with her family and friends.
She got the best of me and it wasn't enough.

FDA chief struggles to explain slow response on baby formula
WASHINGTON (AP) — The head of the Food and Drug Administration faced bipartisan fury from House lawmakers Wednesday over months of delays investigating problems at the nation's largest baby formula plant that prompted an ongoing shortage.
FDA Commissioner Robert Califf laid out a series of setbacks in congressional testimony that slowed his agency’s response, including a COVID-19 outbreak at the plant and a whistleblower complaint that didn’t reach FDA leadership because it was apparently lost in the mail.
Califf testified before a House subcommittee investigating the shortage, which has snowballed into a national political controversy and forced the U.S. military to begin airlifting supplies from Europe.
The shortage mostly stems from Abbott’s Michigan plant, which the FDA shut down in February due to contamination issues. Under fire from Congress, parents and the media, Califf gave the first detailed account Wednesday of why his agency took months to inspect and shutter the plant despite learning of potential problems as early as September.
The FDA's response was: “Too slow and there were decisions that were suboptimal along the way,” Califf told lawmakers.
The FDA and President Joe Biden face mounting pollical pressure to explain why they didn’t intervene earlier to try and head off the supply crisis.
“Why did it take an onslaught of national media attention for the Biden administration to act with a sense of urgency required to address an infant formula shortage?” asked Rep. Morgan Griffith, R-Virginia, the committee's ranking Republican.
Califf said the agency had been trying to monitor formula supplies since 2020 when COVID-related disruptions first emerged, but has limited visibility into industry supply chains.
The House panel also heard from three formula manufacturers, including a top Abbott Nutrition executive who apologized to parents for the shortage.
“We let you down,” said Abbott vice president Christopher Calamari. “We are deeply sorry.”
FDA staff began honing in on Abbott's plant last fall while tracking several bacterial infections in infants who had consumed formula from the facility. The four cases occurred between September and January, leading to hospitalization and two deaths.
The FDA planned to begin inspecting the Sturgis, Michigan, plant on Dec. 30, according to Califf's testimony. But Abbott warned that about a dozen of its employees had tested positive for COVID-19 and requested a delay. As a result, the FDA didn't begin its inspection until Jan. 31.
After detecting positive samples of a rare-but-dangerous bacteria in multiple parts of the plant, the FDA closed the facility and Abbott announced a massive recall of its formula on Feb. 17.
“We knew that ceasing plant operations would create supply problems but we had no choice given the insanitary conditions,” Califf said in opening testimony.
Abbott and the FDA have reached an agreement to reopen the plant next week, under which the company must regularly undergo outside safety audits.
Califf also struggled to explain the FDA's months-long timeline in responding to an October whistleblower complaint alleging numerous safety violations at Abbott’s plant, including employees falsifying records.
Several FDA staffers reviewed the complaint in late October when it was sent to a regional FDA office, but an interview didn't take place until two months later, in part due to the whistleblower's scheduling conflicts.
Senior FDA officials eventually received the complaint via email, but not until February due to “an isolated failure in FDA’s mailroom, likely due to COVID-19 staffing issues,” according to the FDA testimony. A mailed copy addressed to then-acting commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock has still not been located.
Political outrage over the shortage has landed squarely on the FDA and Califf, the only administration official who has testified thus far on the issue. The problems have escalated into a political firestorm for the White House, which has invoked the Defense Production Act and emergency flights to shore up supplies.
Califf also faced questions about why his agency didn't anticipate the shortage and alert other government agencies sooner. The FDA contacted the U.S. Department of Agriculture about Feb. 11., just days before Abbott's recall, according to FDA's timeline.
The FDA has requested new authorities, funding and staff to track supply chain data that could have helped get ahead of the problem, Califf said, but has not received them from Congress.
Several lawmakers raised longstanding concerns that the FDA’s food program — which oversees most U.S. foods except meat, poultry and eggs — is underfunded and needs restructuring.
The program has a convoluted leadership structure in which there is a director of FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and a separate deputy commissioner for “food policy and response." The deputy commissioner has more of a safety focus, but has no direct authority over food center staff nor field staff who inspect company plants.
Both officials testified Wednesday, along with Califf.
When Rep. Nanette Diaz-Barragan, D-Calif., asked who is in charge of food safety, Califf and food center director Susan Mayne gave extended answers, describing different roles and responsibilities.
“I don’t think there’s one person that is responsible,” Diaz-Barragan responded. “I just think it goes to show there needs to be restructuring and it needs to be more clear who’s ultimately responsible.”
Later Wednesday afternoon, Abbott's Calamari told lawmakers his company plans to build extra capacity and redundancies into its supply chain to avoid future disruptions. After the company restarts production next month it will be able to produce more formula than before the recall, he noted.
“We’re going to learn from this. We’re going to get better as a result of this," Calamari said.
Executives from Reckitt and Gerber also testified on their efforts to boost production.

Ecovolis program has proven successful in dramatically increasing bicycle use in Tirana, which, formerly, was a city without a developed bicycle culture. Ecovolis program is the first project in Albania that provides low-income adults with commuter bicycles as well as a donating program for children bicycles. The program recently completed two major steps, opening new bike stations in the city of Durrës and integrating Tourist Information Point Service to the bicycles stations' structure.
History
The Tirana Community Bicycle Albania project won financial support from the George Soros Open Society Foundation Albania (OSFA). An even larger contribution came from the US-based Pedal for Progress organization, which donated 450 bicycles. Sixty of these were used road bikes, which were modified and painted by local technicians to serve as public bikes in the Ecovolis scheme. Another portion was set aside to donate to children and to activists and volunteers at PASS. Still another portion were diverted to the project's Eco Bicycle Shop, a social enterprise which sells bikes for USD 50-150 and reinvests profits for the service and maintenance of Ecovolis bicycles. The main objective of the program was to introduce the community to an inexpensive, environmental friendly form of transport -- the bicycle; to sell used bikes at low prices; to donate bikes to the children of needy families and to PASS volunteers; to establish a bike sharing-scheme in the city (Ecovolis); and to employ financially disadvantaged people and young students to operate the bike-sharing scheme.
System
Each Ecovolis station is staffed by two employees in two shifts and contains 30 -- 60 bicycles. In order to use the bicycles it is required to provide a personal identification document (such as passport or ID card) or by subscribing to the Ecovolis membership Card.
The first black and red bicycles, (also the colors of the Albanian flag) were donated from US-organization Pedal for Progress, (which collect and donate used bicycles). As these bicycles were of different types, converting them for safe and comfortable public use took months of work. The price per bicycle varies from 60 US$ to 90 US$ each. The bicycle is equipped with a front bicycle basket, a behind carrier, a comfortable saddle and a public fender with the Ecovolis sign.
The bicycle stations also provide touristic information to the visitors and a list of the city attractions. Moreover, being a non-profit social enterprise, during particular days the program offers free bicycle service, cycling courses, donations of bicycles and helmets for children in need, bike tours and a bicycle recycle program.

A significant increase in ceramic (incl. zirconium oxide and aluminum oxide) restorations has been noted in recent years, as has the steady rise of metal free restorations. A trend which will continue to gather force. CLEARFIL™ ESTHETIC CEMENT has been developed against this background. CLEARFIL™ ESTHETIC CEMENT is available in 5 color shades which can be used with CLEARFIL™ CERAMIC PRIMER to offer strong adhesion to esthetic materials.
The cement offers a dual-curing system; the self-curing system reduces the polymerization stress in the adhesion interface due to the self-etching primer “ED Primer II” including accelerators, and the light-curing generates good marginal sealing of the restoration and high wear resistance of the cement surface. The practical TRY IN PASTEs in identical colors allow you to test the color you wish to use for the restoration. The TRY IN PASTE can be easily and quickly washed away. The practical automix syringe automatically mixes the two pastes of the cement. The cement can be applied directly in the restoration causing nearly no air bubbles.

The weather for this year's race was perfect for racing. There was a hard frost overnight but this brought clear bright skies and crisp air. There was no real wind to speak of.
Waterstops were provided at the 4.5 and 7 mile marks on the course. All access roads were well stewarded. The event was sponsored by Bewleys 1840 and many local business establishments. Credit must go to the Trim AC team for their flawless organisation. If the first three years of this year are anything to go on then this race will continue to grow. For runners around the North Leinster area this 10 mile race serves as a perfect training progress stepping stone to the Bohermeen Half Marathon which will take place in March 2016 and is located only 15 minutes drive from Trim.

If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.
Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs
We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?
The explaination is very simple.
Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.
ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.
Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/
I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
Don't like your photograph here?
That's OK! We understand!
If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.
I want to tell people about these great photographs!
Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez, Senator Tom Carper, Governor John Carney and Delaware Transportation Secretary Nicole Majeski discuss how the Low/No Emissions Bus Program in President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will help ensure that more Americans have clean and high-quality transit options, and that workers gain the skills they need to repair, maintain and operate the transit vehicles of the future.

Premier Jason Kenney and Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Devin Dreeshen discussed the government’s support for increasing access to global markets for Alberta’s agri-food sector during a news conference held at Lewis Farms near Spruce Grove, Alberta on Wednesday, September 30, 2020.
Alberta’s government is working to increase investment in the province and to better sell Alberta agriculture products around the world.
To help increase international exports, specific trade and investment officers will join Invest Alberta’s international offices in Mexico City, and Singapore. The province’s international offices in the United States and the European Union will also each welcome one new staff member. This will complement Alberta agriculture’s international exposure in the Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo and New Delhi offices.
Raising Alberta’s profile as an attractive investment destination in global markets is a key outcome of the Investment and Growth Strategy to increase provincial exports.
“In such trying times, the entrepreneurial spirit of Albertans continues to remain unmatched. Alberta’s farmers and ranchers are the hardest working and most innovative in the world and provide renowned products like Alberta Beef. Improving market access is critical to the growth and long-term success of Alberta’s farmers and ranchers. Putting experienced, intelligent and driven people on the ground will create countless opportunities for our thriving agriculture sector and support them for generations to come.” said Premier Kenney. Increasing access for women and girls to physical education and soccer helps them build confidence and a stronger social integration. Involving girls in soccer alongside with boys can help overcome prejudice that often contribute to social vulnerability of women and girls in a given society.
Increasing female labor participation not only economically and politically empowers women, it also has the potential to substantially increase economic productivity. This is an especially critical issue in Japan where getting more women into the workforce could result in GDP gains of up to 13 percent and help to offset losses caused by the country’s demographic decline. Cooperation and coordination between Japan and the United States could also help to economically empower women elsewhere around the world, especially in developing countries where the potential economic gains are most significant. While increased female labor participation presents a significant opportunity, the structural and social hurdles are enormous – and it is not clear that policy initiatives currently underway in Japan and elsewhere can surmount them. HISTORY:
The Leeds and Liverpool canal was built from 1772 to increase industrial transportation between West Yorkshire and the Merseyside ports. Limestone, textiles and coal were in critical demand between Yorkshire and Lancashire at this time where trains were still only beginning to happen. Committees in Bradford and Liverpool formed and for a while disputed over their different respective plans for the route Following appeasement, the route as proposed via engineers John Longbotham and James Brindley was built at a cost of nearly £260, 000 and a length of 109 miles. The first phase, from Bingley to Shipley was up and running by 1774. By this time, Brindley had passed, and Longbotham had taken over as chief engineer. The construction from the Liverpool end reached Wigan in 1781.
The canal's overall construction spanned five decades, delayed further by money and disputes and also the colonial war in the late 1700s. Trade from Yorkshire to Liverpool was already brisk by the time construction finished, including branches - significantly the ones to Bradford and Wigan. Although both steam and horse drawn railways were available by 1800, the canal continued to thrive for a century.
Horse drawn barges would last impressively until 1960 while industrial trade remaining until the 1980s, by which time the bulk of such work was being done, quite inevitably by trains and lorries.
Today, the Leeds and Liverpool canal stretches for 127 miles, crossing the Pennines between the two cities, with additional branches bringing people - and still business - to and from other towns in Yorkshire and Lancashire on its journey. 91 locks are included, notably the notorious 5 Locks at Bingley, which take an apparent 3-4 hours to negotiate.
The towpath is used heavily by both walkers and cyclists on its route, with the Leeds end being notably active especially during commuter hours. At the newly developed Granary Wharf, the canal basin area has been heavily redeveloped in recent years while the new southern entrance to Leeds station also providing additionally quick access to the canal route.
Although increased demand during the Olympic and Paralympic Games was generally well anticipated, the numbers using the 132 to North Greenwich during the Olympics came as something of a surprise, and extra journeys using double-deckers were operated at busy times.
During the Paralympics it was decided to convert route 132 temporarily to double-deck operation, using Enviro400s such as E257 seen departing North Greenwich Station on Wednesday 5th September. These buses had been used on Olympic shuttles - hence no fleet names - and after the Paralympics will move to their intended home, New Cross (NX) Garage. They will be allocated to route 36, replacing PVLs which will be refurbished and used elsewhere.
The rapid growth of industry in Chattanooga in the late 19th century and early 20th century brought an increasing demand for electricity, and the rapid-flowing Ocoee River— which slices through a gorge in the mountains 30 miles (48 km) east of the city— was considered a prime candidate for hydroelectric power by the region's early electric companies. In 1910, the C.M. Clark Company, an electrical transportation holding firm, formed the Eastern Tennessee Power Company to build two hydroelectric dams on the Ocoee, and market their electricity output primarily to Chattanooga. Work on Ocoee Dam No. 1 began later that year, and was completed in late December 1911. By January 27, 1912, electricity from Ocoee Dam No. 1 was flowing into Chattanooga.
In 1922, the Eastern Tennessee Power Company and several other entities merged to form the Tennessee Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which overhauled Ocoee No. 1 in the 1930s. In 1933, the TVA Act created the Tennessee Valley Authority and gave the Authority oversight of the Tennessee River watershed, which includes the Ocoee River. The head of TEPCO, Jo Conn Guild, was vehemently opposed to the creation of TVA, and with the help of attorney Wendell Wilkie, challenged the constitutionality of the TVA Act in federal court. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the TVA Act, however, in its 1939 decision Tennessee Electric Power Company v. TVA. On August 16, 1939, TEPCO was forced to sell its assets to TVA for $78 million, which included $2.68 million for Ocoee Dam No. 1.

Due to the expansion of the Lothian service network and a welcome increase in passenger numbers the need for driving staff is important. A good company will always keep the training budget 'sacrosanct' and several of these Volvo 7900's are now on training work. Not just within the city but beyond it.
Fleet 25 and Longstone crew call at North Berwick depot. This garage traces it origins back to the days of J Stark & Co who go back nearly as long as SMT itself and who formed a close association with them from 1928. However SMT garaged buses at George Fowlers premises in Forth Street before moving them here in the early sixties. With Firstbus giving up their East Lothian services the garage and services were taken over by Lothian and today works service X5 and an equal share of the 124. A yard at the rear accommodates the double deckers. Nowadays circumstances are such that some long service drivers take early retirement or go part-time hence we are seeing some 'young faces' on some Lothian routes in particular the 46 and 48 single decks and no doubt in time in the East Lothian sector.

For me the best and most effective method to combat Nazism and its accompanying manifestations is through increasing the awareness of who have been born since the end of WWII--adults as well as our children. They definitely should learn from our societal triumphs as well as from our failures. Our children, our future, must learn about the Holocaust. No matter how painful this subject is. To see results from this educational endeavor will require a long, slow, patient, sustained effort. But it MUST continue.
Rosa never was comfortable sharing her story to others. She never fully understood the significant educational value of her story. So through the auspices pf the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education (OJMCHE), I have taken it upon myself to share her story with adult and school groups.
Here I am before a class deep in the isolated foothills of Oregon telling Rosa’s story. These students are as far away from the gas chambers of Auschwitz as is possible, and yet, what occurred at Auschwitz is very meaningful and relevant to them. Through them, we can nurture the creation of a world which celebrates and cherishes social and cultural diversity, and that the tragedy of Auschwitz will never occur again.

In 1724, a chapel was built near the Occoquan River to serve Hamilton Parish. As the population of the area now known as Fairfax County increased, a new parish by the name of “Truro.” The church at Occoquan was soon replaced with a frame church near Pohick Creek, built around 1730. The growth and development of Truro Parish was shaped in-part by its most prominent vestry members, the Washington Family who lived at nearby Mount Vernon. Another important figure in the parish’s history is George Mason, a planter who owned nearby Gunston Hall plantation and who represented Virginia in the constitutional convention in addition to drafting the Virginia Declaration of Rights, one of the models that eventually became the Bill of Rights.
The vestry of Truro Parish authorized the construction of a new parish church in 1767 and resolved to move the center of the parish to the present site. Construction of the present Pohick Church began in the early 1770s with funds raised from the sale of the pews in the proposed building. The designs for Pohick Church were drawn up by James Wren, who also designed the very similar Christ Church in Alexandria and the Falls Church. Completed in 1774, Pohick was only used for a few years before the disestablishment of the Anglican Church in Virginia. George Washington resigned from its vestry in 1782 and the last colonial rector, the Rev. Mason Weems ceased holding regular services soon thereafter.
In the mid-1830s, Virginia’s Episcopal Bishop, the Rev. William Meade, wrote a brief account of a visit to Pohick Church, lamenting the deserted pews of the church of Washington and Mason. His appeal inspired an effort to restore Pohick Church for active service. Under the direction of the Rev. W.P.C. Johnson and with the support of the Washington Family, Pohick was restored in 1840. However, the church was heavily damaged during the American Civil War when United States soldiers ransacked the historic building, seeking souvenirs in connection with Washington. An image of the interior with a shrub growing atop the reredos and the tablets of the creed, Lord’s Prayer, and commandments torn apart was taken by famed Civil War-era photographer Matthew Brady. The exterior walls of Pohick Church bear graffiti of soldier’s signatures carved into the sandstone quoin stones and door surrounds. Pohick’s churchyard was used as an encampment and Professor Thaddeous Lowe launched his observation balloon, the “Intrepid,” from the churchyard to spy on Confederate army positions.
Pohick Church was restored for services in 1874 with support from the Mount Vernon Ladies Association and the Daughters of the American Revolution. The rectangular church is built of bricks laid in Flemish bond with sandstone trim used as quoining stones on the corners as well as pilasters and pediments which frame the two west and one south entrance doors. Inside, Pohick Church has been restored faithfully to its colonial arrangement with box pews laid out between two aisles connecting the west entrance doors to the chancel at the east. Of particular note is the large stone baptismal font, inscribed 1773 (when the present Pohick Church was built), but believed to be much older, possibly a Medieval mortar.
