George R. Crook (September 8, 1828 – March 21, 1890) was a career United States Army officer, most noted for his distinguished service during the American Civil War and the Indian Wars. During the 1880s, the Apache nicknamed Crook Nantan Lupan, which means "Grey Wolf."

Crook was born to Thomas and Elizabeth Matthews Crook on a farm near Taylorsville, Ohio (near Dayton). Nominated to the United States Military Academy by Congressman Robert Schenck, he graduated in 1852, ranking near the bottom of his class.

When the Civil War broke out, Crook accepted a commission as Colonel of Ohio's 36th regiment and led it on duty in western Virginia. He was in command of the 3rd Brigade in the District of the Kanawha where he was wounded in a small fight at Lewisburg, VA. Crook returned to command of his regiment during the Northern Virginia Campaign. He and his regiment were part of John Pope's headquarters escort at the Second Battle of Bull Run.

Crook led his brigade at the battle of South Mountain and near Burnside's Bridge at the battle of Antietam. He was promoted to the rank of brigadier general on September 7, 1862. During these early battles he developed a lifelong friendship with one of his subordinates, Col. Rutherford B. Hayes of the 23rd Ohio Infantry.

Crook successfully campaigned against the Snake Indians in the 1864-68 Snake War, where he won nationwide recognition. Crook had fought Indians in Oregon before the Civil War. He was assigned to the Pacific Northwest to us new tactics in this war, which had been waged for several years. Crook arrived in Boise City to take command on December 11, 1866. The general noticed that the Northern Paiute used the fall, winter and spring seasons to gather food, so he adopted the tactic recommended by a predecessor George B. Currey: to attack during the winter.[9] Crook had his cavalry approach the Paiute on foot in attack at their winter camp.

Crook served against the Sioux during the Great Sioux War of 1876-77. He fought the Lakota at the Battle of the Rosebud. On 28 May 1876, Brigadier General George Crook assumed direct command of the Bighorn and Yellowstone Expedition at Fort Fetterman. Crook had gathered a strong force from his Department of the Platte. Leaving Fort Fetterman on 29 May, the 1,051-man column consisted of 15 companies from the 2d and 3d Cavalry, 5 companies from the 4th and 9th Infantry, 250 mules, and 106 wagons. On 14 June, the column was joined by 261 Shoshone and Crow allies. Based on intelligence reports, Crook ordered his entire force to prepare for a quick march. Each man was to carry only 1 blanket, 100 rounds of ammunition, and 4 days' rations. The wagon train would be left at Goose Creek, and the infantry would be mounted on the pack mules. On 17 June, Crook's column set out at 0600, marching northward along the south fork of Rosebud Creek. The Crow and Shoshone scouts were particularly apprehensive. Although the column had not yet encountered any sign of Indians, the scouts seemed to sense their presence. The soldiers, particularly the mule-riding infantry, seemed fatigued from the early start and the previous day's 35-mile march. Accordingly, Crook stopped to rest his men and animals at 0800. Although he was deep in hostile territory, Crook made no special dispositions for defense. His troops halted in their marching order. The Cavalry battalions led the column, followed by the battalion of mule-borne foot soldiers, and a provisional company of civilian miners and packers brought up the rear.

The Crow and Shoshone scouts remained alert while the soldiers rested. Several minutes later, the soldiers heard the sound of intermittent gunfire coming from the bluffs to the north. As the intensity of fire increased, a scout rushed into the camp shouting, "Lakota, Lakota!" The Battle of the Rosebud was on. By 0830, the Sioux and Cheyenne had hotly engaged Crook's Indian allies on the high ground north of the main body. Heavily outnumbered, the Crow and Shoshone scouts fell back toward the camp, but their fighting withdrawal gave Crook time to deploy his forces. Rapidly firing soldiers drove off the attackers but used up much of the ammunition meant for use later in the campaign. Low on ammunition and with numerous wounded, the General returned to his post. Historians debate whether Crook's pressing on could have prevented the killing of the five companies of the 7th Cavalry Regiment led by George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Crook commanded the Department of the Platte from 1875 to 1882, with headquarters at Fort Omaha in North Omaha, Nebraska. During this period, in 1879, he spoke on behalf of the Ponca tribe and Native American rights during the trial of Standing Bear v. Crook, in which the federal judge affirmed that Standing Bear had some of the rights of US citizens. That same year his home, now called the General Crook House, was completed.

May 29th, 2026, Kentville Memorial Park, the ABF Friday night concert, ( Are the good ole days of dollar dogs and bargain Big 8 soda pop over) ? High level G7 security protocol established for an evening of 20 dollar hamburger food trucks and little kids bouncy castles ? ( must have taken up most of their budget at the sacrifice of bringing in some good quality outside live entertainment) ? Town calls in outside police to reinforce local Kentville police, cordons off entire ground zero event perimeter with road blocks, street barricades and manned guard check posts to enforce maximum level traffic control that, unfortunately, has made patrons including seniors, the disabled, toddlers, and Mothers carrying babies have to park and walk from a fair distance to get to the park gates ? Also, in past years concert organizers always brought in special outside guest rock bands, and always featured interesting games, demonstrations and displays, and there was always a visit from the Queen Annapolisa Royal party following the prestigious coronation ceremony in Wolfville, However, unfortunately, this years event seems to have deteriorated into some kind of a Children's outdoor romper room type family show featuring food trucks, inflatable air bouncy castles and a local band featured as the star main stage performer ? There's not much to do or see for those exceeding the elementary school level other than maybe purchase some food from a food truck that charges upscale restaurant prices and then dine on a paper plate using plastic utensils while standing in a crowd of unruly kids and being lustfully observed by some nearby saliva drooling pet dogs leashed to their owners ? However, thanks to the heightened security and upscale traffic control there was a report of one parking violator being successfully apprehended and a runaway pet was also captured and returned to its owner ? www.flickr.com/photos/74039487@N02/54558198569/in/photost...

A cultural genocide is going on in Kentville ? Why is it always Kentville ? Now it's the library ? First came the loss of the Railway and Day-liner service back in 1989, then Kings council expropriated the local Airport and evicted the many other established aviation schools and businesses, they had tried to take Grand street parade away from Kentville in 2017, and then we lost the famous Cornwallis Inn logo and the 88 yrs old statue in Halifax was torn down, they then terminated Apple Blossom Princess Kentville and ended the 87 consecutive years of the Queen Annapolisa pageant. Kentville lost a huge amount of diversity provided by the many nearby villages that always participated in the Festival, as well as a termination of the Princess teas, the Coronation, and all of the popular mid-week public outdoor entertainment always held at Memorial Park during ABF week ? And now they appear to be after the popular long time Kentville Library ?

After the Town had terminated many traditional sources of public enjoyment never offering anything similar or even a close replacement, and, as Kentville gradually approaches cultural ghost town status, it is noticable that the downtown business core (in which the Mayor has a major private business interest ) has been totally renovated and restored to never before seen pristine after a complete new beautification program complete with new installations of street paving, street paint, new double sidewalks on both sides, new driveway entrances, new curb and gutter both sides, signage and flower pots ? And the other three surrounding streets making up this downtown business block have also been totally upgraded including Aberdeen Street (twice), Cornwallis Street and Main Street ?

Smoking and Asbestos Increases Risk for Lung Cancer in 2018

Researchers determined that smoking and asbestos exposure collectively can increase the risk of asbestos-related diseases up to 90 percent in some cases while having little or no causal effect on other diseases. Both smoking and asbestos irritate the lungs. Smoking is a well-known trigger for lung cancer. Chronic exposure to smoke (smoking) causes as many as 90% of lung cancers.

Breathing asbestos fibers can cause lung damage which can lead to non-cancerous asbestos diseases such as pleural disease and asbestosis, or to cancerous diseases such as lung cancer or mesothelioma. When asbestos fibers are inhaled, some may be expelled, but others may remain in the lungs for a lifetime. Cigarette smoking weakens the lungs and decreases their ability to expel fibers. Smoking also acts as an irritant in the air passages causing a higher production of mucus, thereby blocking the passage of air and further decreasing the removal of fibers from the lungs. If you or a loved one are showing Stage four mesothelioma symptoms or have been diagnosed with stage 4 mesothelioma, we can help you.

Lung Cancer, Smoking and Asbestos

Two large studies examined whether smoking increases the rate of lung cancer in workers chronically exposed to asbestos. With more than 200,000 new lung cancer diagnoses each year, understanding the causes and risk factors of this disease is an important task for the medical community. Research demonstrates that there is a multiplicative effect between lung cancer smoking and asbestos.

Inhaling chemicals in cigarette smoke when the lungs are already facing scarring from asbestos leads to additional respiratory complications. Experts suggest that as the lungs attempt to push asbestos fibers out, continuous scarring occurs when the body faces certain fiber sizes.

Does smoking increase the risk of mesothelioma?

The fact that smoking is detrimental to everybody’s health is no secret. It is also well known that it can lead to cancer. But just what is the link between mesothelioma and smoking? Since mesothelioma is caused by inhaling or ingesting asbestos fibers, it seems that smoking is not related to it.

Asbestos exposure can lead to the development of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that affects the lining of the lung. In some cases, it can affect the lining of different organs.

The Dangers of Smoking

An important fact is also that smoking is the biggest cause of preventable deaths in this country. When people smoke, they inhale thousands of different chemicals and other contaminants, many of which are carcinogenic. When these chemicals are combined with asbestos fibers, there is a reason to believe that the chance of developing mesothelioma is greatly increased.

Does Smoking Make Mesothelioma Worse?

Smoking is not directly linked to mesothelioma, but it does have an effect on a patient’s ability to fight their disease. If you are a smoker who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, quitting smoking now can have a significant impact on your prognosis

Benefits of Quitting

Live Longer

Quitting, even after years of smoking, can still have a positive effect on a mesothelioma patient’s life expectancy. Treatment is more effective the healthier a patient is, and quitting smoking is an obvious first step to being healthier.

Comfort

Mesothelioma can be a painful disease, which is only compounded by a smoking habit. Smoking heightens the symptoms of mesothelioma, so quitting can give the patient a better quality of life.

Smoking Cessation

Doctors can help the patient quit smoking. It is important to talk to them if they haven’t already offered help. They should be able to suggest or provide nicotine replacement therapy and support. Find a mesothelioma specialist who can help you make changes to improve your prognosis now.

Asbestos in Cigarettes

Cigarettes contain more than 4,000 toxic chemicals. More than 60 of these are identified as probable causes of cancer. Breathing cigarette smoke harms numerous organs in the body, but it is particularly damaging to lung tissue. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans die from lung cancer, largely because of tobacco use.

Furthermore, a debate no longer exists about whether cigarettes contained asbestos. Evidence proves that one brand of cigarettes, Kent Cigarettes, integrated asbestos fibers in the filter.

Will smoking increase my chance of contracting mesothelioma?

It is possible that smoking may increase your chances of contracting mesothelioma, but this has not been supported by medical research. Smoking is not the cause of mesothelioma – asbestosis. Smoking may, however, adversely affect your lungs and make them less able to expel asbestos fibers that are inhaled. If you or a loved one was recently diagnosed with Stage four mesothelioma cancer, our specialists here at the asbestos cancer organization are here to help you now. We can also connect you with a mesothelioma lawyer at our partners of GPW Law can also be very beneficial.

The system is based on 6 bike stations, respectively staffed by two employees in two shifts. Ecovolis program has proven successful in dramatically increasing bicycle use in Tirana, which, formerly, was a city without a developed bicycle culture. Ecovolis program is the first project in Albania that provides low-income adults with commuter bicycles as well as a donating program for children bicycles. The program recently completed two major steps, opening new bike stations in the city of Durrës and integrating Tourist Information Point Service to the bicycles stations' structure.

History

The Tirana Community Bicycle Albania project won financial support from the George Soros Open Society Foundation Albania (OSFA). An even larger contribution came from the US-based Pedal for Progress organization, which donated 450 bicycles. Sixty of these were used road bikes, which were modified and painted by local technicians to serve as public bikes in the Ecovolis scheme. Another portion was set aside to donate to children and to activists and volunteers at PASS. Still another portion were diverted to the project's Eco Bicycle Shop, a social enterprise which sells bikes for USD 50-150 and reinvests profits for the service and maintenance of Ecovolis bicycles. The main objective of the program was to introduce the community to an inexpensive, environmental friendly form of transport -- the bicycle; to sell used bikes at low prices; to donate bikes to the children of needy families and to PASS volunteers; to establish a bike sharing-scheme in the city (Ecovolis); and to employ financially disadvantaged people and young students to operate the bike-sharing scheme.

System

Each Ecovolis station is staffed by two employees in two shifts and contains 30 -- 60 bicycles. In order to use the bicycles it is required to provide a personal identification document (such as passport or ID card) or by subscribing to the Ecovolis membership Card.

The first black and red bicycles, (also the colors of the Albanian flag) were donated from US-organization Pedal for Progress, (which collect and donate used bicycles). As these bicycles were of different types, converting them for safe and comfortable public use took months of work. The price per bicycle varies from 60 US$ to 90 US$ each. The bicycle is equipped with a front bicycle basket, a behind carrier, a comfortable saddle and a public fender with the Ecovolis sign.

The bicycle stations also provide touristic information to the visitors and a list of the city attractions. Moreover, being a non-profit social enterprise, during particular days the program offers free bicycle service, cycling courses, donations of bicycles and helmets for children in need, bike tours and a bicycle recycle program.

The race started on the Trim/Athboy road on the town's ring road and proceded to take an anti-clockwise loop out towards the village of Dunderry and townland of Kilbride before returning back to the Trim Industrial Estate for the finish. The route is held on quiet country roads with some hills at 3, 6, 8 mile segments.

The weather for this year's race was perfect for racing. There was a hard frost overnight but this brought clear bright skies and crisp air. There was no real wind to speak of.

Waterstops were provided at the 4.5 and 7 mile marks on the course. All access roads were well stewarded. The event was sponsored by Bewleys 1840 and many local business establishments. Credit must go to the Trim AC team for their flawless organisation. If the first three years of this year are anything to go on then this race will continue to grow. For runners around the North Leinster area this 10 mile race serves as a perfect training progress stepping stone to the Bohermeen Half Marathon which will take place in March 2016 and is located only 15 minutes drive from Trim.

I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?

When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.

I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?

If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. For offline usage and printing all of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution.

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

Seen from a moving bus in Jerusalem

The increase of construction of apartments had a serious impact on Japanese cities' green areas. The fact that these cities lack of space tends to a land conflict. Green areas have been sacrificed for building construction. Recently, Japanese cities made a serious effort to replant green spaces. Even apartments cohabit with plants and other green spaces as this picture took at Yoyogi-Uehara shows. Constructors and architects are encouraged to include vegetation. Here no vertical green walls but balconies and interstices are filled with plants. Balconies for instance offer the most practical method to include vegetation without sacrificing significant floor area. The gap between building are also a good method for planted areas without disturbing the adjacent buildings, which, on the contrary, profit from the presence of these green areas since they shade the buildings during hot summers, foster biodiversity and beautify the buildings.

Magdalena Ranger District

Thunderbird Area Prescribed Burn

Fire crews completed 148 acres during this operational period located north of FR 275 and west of Game Road on the Magdalena Ranger District.

The decision to proceed on the prescribed burn depends on multiple factors, including resource availability, fuel moisture levels, air quality and forecast weather. Prescribed burns are designed to meet specific objectives and are always managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority.

Prescribed fires are one of the most effective tools available to resource managers for restoring fire-adapted ecosystems and reducing the risk of high-severity wildfire. Fire managers use prescribed fire to improve forest health, remove hazardous fuels, increase firefighter safety, enhance wildlife habitat, and protect communities and watersheds.

With fire there is smoke, but compared to wildfires, prescribed fires are shorter in duration and are conducted under weather conditions to minimize the impact of smoke on the public. Fire crews use tactics such as starting early in the day and ending ignitions early in the afternoon to allow for the most ventilation possible throughout the burn and dividing blocks into smaller units to minimize smoke impacts as much as possible. However, smoke may be visible periodically from local communities and the surrounding areas for the duration of the project until the burning vegetation is out. Information on air quality and protecting your health can be found online at the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH).

With the increase of older EMD road units becoming yard power, shooting a pair of End Cab units is quite hard these days.

Here a Pair of SW1500's shuffle cars around Dilworth.

Both were relettered to GN in early 2015.

In this case they combine pontoons by mounting a wooden platform on them. But often only one pontoon was used as a ferry (faster and lighter).

Initially (from 1888 on) in the Dutch army cyclists were only used as ordonnances, messengers.

In those days almost no one could cycling. So the army cyclists were volunteers from the ANWB, with an individually five year contract.

These army cyclists were not only fast, but they turned out to be also great explorers ordinances. Quite independently, not rapidly caught; they repeatedly received praise for their intellectual way they carried out their explorations.

A few years later, actually every conscript military could bike and the ANWB volunteers were no longer needed.

During WWI my grandfather was a military bike messenger.

Some general remarks on the Dutch Korps Wielrijders

As their numbers increased, these cycling soldiers were also seen as mobile reserve, = fast-moving infantry. Troops which could come quickly and quietly to places and assist the troops already stationed there till the rest of the reinforcements should show up.

Some Dutch officers with the British cyclists in the Boer War in mind, saw their cyclist troops even as agile, easily movable, near-silent forces that could strike hard and disappear.
