(228/366) Although it's very rural here I don't like to encourage Poppy & Bella (esp. Bella) to walk on the road outside our house so each morning I pop them in the car drive 400 yards to park by this track where I walk them. It goes nowhere & they have a good run while I take photos.

Bella is a monkey though, she chases butterflies & Swallows. Yesterday she found a manky old carrot on the track & ran off 100 yards to lay down & eat it. She would not come back when I called despite me feeding Poppy blackberries to make her jealous. Plan B is called for lol.

My first picture in explore! It motivated me a lot!

Lake Ice 2...

In the last days of December we did a short hike in the Park. it was slightly cold the wind was gusting at times, only a few brave or crazy folks were out and about; us included.

the main lake froze over quickly this year. the trees along the shore have their lower branches frozen in to the surface of the ice. they are trapped and cannot get out till the spring thaw.

[NT] St Peters Church. Gunby, Lincolnshire.

Situated in the leafy glade in the grounds of Gunby Hall, this delightful medieval church contains many memorials to the Massingberd family, once owners of Gunby.

The church dates to the 14th century but was comprehensively restored in 1868–1870 by Victorian architect James Fowler. It is Early English in style with limestone walls and slate roof. Inside can be seen beautifully crafted brasses showing Mr and Mrs Massingberd standing under an ornate double canopy, dating from around 1400. The stained glass east window dating 1906 is in memory of Margaret Massingberd. The Massingberd family is long established in Lincolnshire, tracing its descent to Lambert Massingberd of Sutterton on the Wash who was convicted of grievous bodily harm in Boston in 1288. Through the marriage of Sir Thomas Massingberd to Joan de Bratoft in 1495 the lands of Bratoft and Gunby and the moated manor house at Bratoft came into the family, surrounded by fish ponds and an extensive park. An Elizabethan garden seems to have adorned Bratoft Manor, of which archaeological remains can be seen in the landscape today.

During the Civil War the Massingberd brothers, Henry and Drayner, fought on the Parliamentary side. Both brothers prospered under the Commonwealth of Oliver Cromwell. Drayner went on to found the branch of the family seated at South Ormsby in Lincolnshire. Henry served as High Sheriff of the county and was rewarded with a baronetcy by Cromwell. This was probably because of Henry's generosity to the State in maintaining thirty foot soldiers in Ireland for three years keeping the peace after the bloody campaigns of 1649-51.

It was Sir Henry’s son, Sir William, the second baronet, who decided to move the family home across the fields from Bratoft to Gunby.

Yes! I’m up before noon. LOL 😂 I’ve been staying up way too late but I went to bed early. I have missed my album GMW. Since I have been sleeping the morning away I just have a hard time posting photos that were not taken in the morning. This is the sun rising and when I let the dogs out I had to run back in and get my phone. I really am going to get a camera at some point. I really appreciate ALL OF YOUR VISITS FAVES AND COMMENTS. THIS IS MY FAVORITE THING TO DO AND MY FAVORITE PLACE TO BE. 🙏 FLICKR IS A GODSEND!

Hawker Hurricane P2902 was built in 1939 as a Mk.1 by Gloster Aircraft and first flew in October of that year starting life with 245 Squadron at Drem in Scotland flying shipping patrols. On May 31 Hawker Hurricane P2902 carrying the code DX and R for Robert was heading for the French coast to provide cover for the evacuation of thousands of allied troops trapped on the shore around Dunkirk. Pilot Officer Kenneth McGlashan engaged a Messerschmitt 109 who managed to hit the Hurricane. The badly injured pilot managed to bring the damaged aircraft down to crash land on a beach in Dunkirk, where it remained until recovered by French enthusiasts in 1988. It was obtained some time later by warbird operator Rick Roberts who subsequently employed the services of several restorers before finally engaging Hawker Restorations, where it was returned to flying condition.

A brief few moments capturing the sunset. Such vibrant colours as ever. More shots of the sunset in my photostream. Scroll left and right, thanks.

In the dappled light of morning’s grace,

Among the oaks and chaparral's embrace,

A tiny bird flits, nimble and quick,

The bushtit, in nature's tapestry, weaves its flick.

With a plump head and a tail so long,

It sings its part in the woodland song.

From highland Mexico to Vancouver's chill,

It graces gardens and parks, ever still.

In mixed woodlands where shadows play,

The bushtit greets each dawning day,

Darting through branches, leaves so green,

A fleeting whisper, often unseen.

Its diet, a dance on silken thread,

Small insects, spiders, on which it's fed.

In flocks it travels, a social sprite,

A tiny wonder, a pure delight.

Oh, bushtit, with your gentle song,

In nature’s choir, you belong.

A symbol of life, both free and slight,

In every flutter, pure delight.

Your presence in the quiet glades,

In every nook where sunlight fades,

Brings joy to those who pause to see,

The simple beauty, wild and free.

Monarch Butterfly In explore 7/13/20

Butterfly

The monarch butterfly or simply monarch is a milkweed butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. Other common names depending on region include milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black veined brown. It may be the most familiar North American butterfly, and is considered an iconic pollinator species. Its wings feature an easily recognizable black, orange, and white pattern, with a wingspan of 8.9–10.2 cm A Müllerian mimic, the viceroy butterfly, is similar in color and pattern, but is markedly smaller and has an extra black stripe across each hindwing.

Danaus chrysippus, also known as the plain tiger or African monarch, is a medium-sized, butterfly widespread in Asia and Africa. It belongs to the Danainae ("Milkweed butterflies") subfamily of the brush-footed butterfly family, Nymphalidae. Its coloration is mimicked by multiple species.

The plain tiger is believed to be one of the first butterflies to be used in art. A 3500-year-old Egyptian fresco in Luxor features the oldest illustration of this species.

Spring is here and the leaves of the ferns unfold themselves. I can't help to see a dragonhead in it ;-)

The temperature was below zero and the wind was adding to the chill factor. As I walked along the promenade two figures walked down onto the beach with their surfboards.

The South East coast of the UK is not renowned for being a good surfing coast, but occasionally the waves whip up and these two obviously thought it was worth swimming out and catching a wave or two.

This was the first boarder about to take the plunge, as the early morning sun illuminated the surface of the sea.
