There’s just as much to be said about couples who have destination weddings in the Outer Banks, Croatan Ridge, as there is about the Outer Banks herself. And while the Outer Banks is one of the top ten wedding destinations in the continental United States, you’d never guess that when you’re here. It’s too quiet, and the peacefulness, tranquility and beauty of the Outer Banks is still intact.

dia de los locos (day of the crazy people) is one of san miguel de allende's most anticipated yearly festivals - - a kind of local carnaval/ halloween....an estimated 10,000 people dance through the streets throwing candies in the colorful parade which features thousands of home-made papier-mache masks ( and some of the rubber variety as well)...i backdated my set of '09 photos in the travel collection.....here is the link to the slide show:

Mayer was born Lazar Mayer in the Ukraine and grew up in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada after his parents fled Russian oppression in 1886. He had a brutal childhood, raised in poverty and suffering physical and emotional abuse from his nearly-illiterate peddler father. In the early 1890s, he changed his name to Louis and fudged his birth date to reflect the more "patriotic" date of July 4, 1885. He moved to Boston in 1904 and struggled as a scrap-metal dealer until he was able to purchase a burlesque house. Although he made large sums by showing films (he made a sizable fortune off The Birth of a Nation (1915)), his early business ventures favored legitimate theater in New England. As his theater empire expanded, he had acquired and refurbished enough small movie theaters that he was able to move his business to Los Angeles and venture into movie production in 1918. Along with Samuel Goldwyn and Marcus Loew of Metro Pictures, he formed a new company called Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).

Over the next 25 years, MGM was "the Tiffany of the studios," producing more films and movie stars than any other studio in the world. Mayer became the prime creator of the enduring Hollywood of myth, home to stars like Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Joan Crawford, and Jean Harlow. Mayer became the highest-paid man in America, one of the country's most successful horse breeders, a political force and Hollywood's leading spokesman. Both he and MGM reached their peaks at the end of World War II, and Mayer was forced out in 1951. He died of leukemia in 1957. - imdb

My first time at the parade in Flushing. If it's another very sunny day next year I'll stand where I think the sun will be more straight on. Everything was pretty harshly backlit. With the help of LR/PS I still came away with some keepers.

Pretty epic fog today.

Members of PSALM: Proud Students Against Land Mines/West Virginia Campaign to Ban Landmines and Cluster Bombs met last fall to discuss how to join the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) in celebrating 20 years of campaigning for a world free of landmines. It seemed fitting that a youth campaign born from an art project would commemorate the event with painted portraits of International Campaign to Ban Landmines campaigners and photographs depicting a timeline celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize winning ICBL and WVCBL/PSALM’s work with the campaign. A “NOBEL” CAUSE: Portraits of Peace opened at the Monongalia Arts Center in Morgantown, West Virginia on January 11th, 2013.

Pride in London Parade had 35,000 people marching. It started just after midday at Hyde Park Corner and carried on until Whitehall Place. The crowds came out on a warm partly cloudy day and packed the streets all along the route. There were stages at many locations including Trafalgar Square, Soho and Leicester Square. It was estimated that more than a million people came to watch. The parade was briefly stopped by Stop the Oil protests in front of the Coke float, this lasted 20 minutes before police came and arrested seven. This happened right in front of me.
