Dal mese di giugno 2022 è in corso lo scavo archeologico del giardino di Largo Corrado Ricci, tra Via dei Fori Imperiali, Via Cavour e Torre dei Conti.

Questa area della città conserva una stratificazione storica e urbanistica estremamente ricca.
Andando a ritroso nel tempo, infatti, il giardino era stato sistemato a seguito delle demolizioni operate negli anni Trenta del secolo scorso per la realizzazione di Via dell’Impero, l’odierna via dei Fori Imperiali, inaugurata nel 1932. Le demolizioni avevano raso al suolo l’ottocentesco Palazzo Nicolini insieme ad altre strutture abitative e commerciali la cui costruzione, grazie ai documenti di archivio, si può far risalire al XVII secolo. Ancora prima, tra XIII e XIV secolo, erano in questa zona strutture connesse alla fortezza urbana della nobile famiglia dei Conti, che aveva il suo perno nella grande torre voluta da papa Innocenzo III (1198-1216). In epoca romana, qui sorgeva il Foro della Pace, fatto costruire dall’imperatore Vespasiano (69-79 d.C.) tra il 71 e il 75.

Lo scavo attualmente in corso si prefigge di raggiungere e indagare proprio il settore nord-orientale di questo Foro, al confine con il muro perimetrale dell’attiguo Foro di Nerva all’altezza delle celebri “Colonnacce”.

Nella conferenza, tenuta da personale della Sovrintendenza Capitolina che lavora nel cantiere, si illustreranno non solo gli aspetti scientifici delle indagini archeologiche ma anche quelli legati alle problematiche connesse alla progettazione e all’esecuzione di uno scavo collocato in pieno centro storico, in una città come Roma. Inoltre saranno illustrate le azioni messe in campo per la comunicazione e condivisione dell’andamento dei lavori con la collettività attraverso le reti social e le visite didattiche in cantiere.

DRAPER, Utah — The approximately 75 Soldiers of the Utah National Guard’s 144th Area Support Medical Company will return to Utah from their 12-month deployment to Afghanistan via charter aircraft Sunday, March 20, at 2:45 p.m. at the Utah Air National Guard Base in Salt Lake City.
The mission of the 144th in Afghanistan was to treat patients in a hospital/clinic setting and provide medevac and ambulance support in a combat environment.

Built in 1928-1932, this Stripped Classical Revival-style building was designed by Edward B. Green and Sons and Albert Hart Hopkins to serve as a state office building, standing on the site of the old Buffalo Central High School, which operated at the site between 1854 and 1914. The old Central High School building was briefly used as a hospital during the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic, with many of the 2,500 deaths due to the flu in Buffalo occurring at the building, which was torn down in 1926 to make way for the present structure. The building was named for Walter J. Mahoney in 1982, whom served as a representative for the Buffalo region in the state legislature for three decades, and later became a state supreme court judge. The building’s cornerstone was, notably, laid by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was, at the time, the Governor of New York. The building features a five-story rectilinear office block to the south along Court Street, with a shorter and smaller two-story wing with chamfered corners to the rear, and is clad in limestone. The front wing features with rustication at the base, decorative window and door trim with keystones on the first floor, a decorative metal grille surround at the recessed front entrance door, and relief panels between window openings on the first floor, with small, unadorned window openings on the second floor, and recessed window bays with large Chicago-style windows on the third, fourth, and fifth floors, flanked by fluted pilasters, and with metal spandrel panels, with the top of the building featuring decorative belt coursing around the parapet that encloses a low-slope roof. The rear wing is less ornate, with simpler trim around the windows, unadorned second-story windows, a simple parapet enclosing a low-slope roof, and two projecting entry vestibules on the east and west flanks of the wing, which feature entry doors with transoms that have stone screens with a roman lattice motif. The well-preserved lobby features decorative trim, a ceiling with decorative beams, ornate Art Deco-style chandeliers, murals, stone wall cladding, pilasters, and columns, and stone and terrazzo floors. The building continues to house offices for the State of New York, and was built contemporaneously with Buffalo City Hall, solidifying the area’s status as a major cultural and governmental center for the city. The building was sold by the State of New York to private ownership in 2021, and is slated for adaptive reuse.
