Leonard Matthews Tarrant was born 8 Feb.1871 in Brightwater, Tasman district.

Leonard went off to the Coromandel Peninsula in search of gold, and it was from there that he answered the call to go to South Africa, when the Prime Minister Richard Seddon offered troops to help the British fight the Boers in 1899.

Leonard had been in the local and Coromandel Mounted Rifles, but otherwise had no experience of fighting. His rank was sergeant, and his serial number was 71.

This was the first time New Zealand had sent troops overseas and there was a lot of pomp and ceremony before the 210-strong 1st Contingent NZ Mounted Rifles finally departed 21 October 1899, on the 'Waiwera' from Wellington for Cape Town.

The 1st Contingent saw a number of actions against the Boers. Leonard was taken prisoner at Kroons Spruit, and it was while in a prisoner of war camp that he caught enteric fever (typhoid) and became the first New Zealander ever to die in a POW camp.

His date of death was recorded as 15 April 1900 at Pretoria. He was buried in the public cemetery close to that town.

Harry Moffatt, wharfinger at the Old Wharf, led the local movement to erect a memorial to Leonard: it cost £40.

In the design was a water trough for horses and dogs, a water fountain for humans, and an oil street lamp for ships to use as a guide when they came into the wharf, as well as a tablet marking peace in South Africa and the coronation of Edward VII, King of England.

This all-purpose memorial was unveiled on 8 July 1903.

Over the years, as the once-bustling centre of activity moved to a new wharf some miles away, the memorial was neglected and vandalised, the lamp went missing and the memorial tablet to Leonard removed and placed elsewhere. Every now and again over the last century, efforts were made to repair the memorial as damage occurred.

==========

The Memorial reads:

"In Memory of Trooper Leonard M. Tarrant, a member of the 1st NZ Contingent. Born Feb 8th 1871 and Died of Enteric Fever April 15th, 1900, at Pretoria, South Africa. Also To Commemorate the Accession of King Edward VII and The Celebration of Peace 1902".

Louis Blériot had cerainly to urge to try ever new things. Because of this habit several of his planes were extensively modified during its existance. In case in point is the Blériot Type VIII whic esentially went through several stages, finalized in its third version (the Type VIII ter).

Blériot was constantly chasing his engineers to come up with new forms of ailerons with the aim of a more stable flight. In this last iteraion (Type VIII ter) ailerons were mounted on the wingtips, a feature also used by Ambroise Goupy in his Goupy II biplane. The Blériot Type VIII ter had also a fuselage that was 2,50 meter shorter than its predecessor, the Type VIII bis.

The end of a Blériot type generally was reached when the type severely crashed and became unrepairable. Blériot andhis engineers started then a completely new design.

With the Type VIII ter Blériot had still some way to go to successfull Type XI (nicknamed The Channel / La Manche). The Type IX monoplane although built never flew and the Type X (a biplane !) was no success either. Luckily he hired as an apprentice engineer Raymond Saulnier who designed most of the successfull Type XI before leaving to Raymond Morane inaugurating with him the later world famous Morane-Saulnier firm. Saulnier held the title chief engineer till at least the thirties.

NIF

Russian Railways or RZD is a Russian fully state-owned vertically integrated railway company, both managing infrastructure and operating freight and passenger train services and has a near-monopoly on long-distance train travel in Russia.

The company was established on 18 September 2003, when a decree was passed to separate the upkeep and operation of the railways from the Ministry of Railways of the Russian Federation, which in turn was the successor of the USSR Ministry of Railways. RZhD is based in Moscow at Novaya Basmannaya str., 2. The operating units of the central part of the staff are at Kalanchevskaya str., 35.

Railways in Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine are controlled by Crimea Railway and Novorossiya Railway, both companies being independent from RZD.

Another bridge in Paris with "love padlocks" with initials or name let by tourists in love. I was with my friend when I took this photo. My friend got very surprised and failed to understand why people do this ! I wasn't surprised as it wasn't the first time I saw these love padlocks. I saw these love padlocks for the first on Ponte Vecchio in Florence in Italy. Then I also saw them in Cologne / Koln.

Now I would like to know if anyone had left some ? where was it ? In case you divorced or broke-up, did you come back to cut it, or wish you could ?

This castle was constructed in 1339 by Hosokawa Yoriharu (細川頼春), a major samurai commander under Ashikaga Takauji (足利 尊氏), the founder of the Ashikaga shogunate. A little out of the way but if you want to enjoy a quiet spot to enjoy cherry blossoms, this is the place to go.

Frank Williams the first, is standing on the right, motorcycles are in my blood..

The locomotive built to lead a nation at war.

A build long in the making...for well over a year and spanning many life changes that attempted to derail this project, Union Pacific #844 finally emerges from my workshop.

UP #844 has captured my imagination since childhood, appearing in several mini-series, TV shows and ads from the early 1990’s. With a sleek body, brutish flat face, high stepping drivers and enormous smoke deflectors, it embodies every definition of monstrous speed and power.

Manufactured by the American Locomotive Company and delivered to UP in 1944 to accommodate both wartime traffic and the projected increase in passenger service after the war, #835-844 were built upon the nearly perfected FEF-1 and FEF-2 series of locomotives delivered between 1937-1939. The entire FEF-3 series proved to be a masterpiece of design and was continuously called upon to lead top priority freight and passenger service.

#844 was delivered on a cold December day in 1944 as the final steam locomotive ever received by UP. Truly an unsleeping giant, #844 is the only steam locomotive of any American Class 1 railroad that has never been struck from the roster. Throughout her revenue career, she headed express freight, fast mail, and the most prestigious passenger trains of the central high plains and mountainous west – The Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose, and Pony Express.

Fitted with 80-inch drivers and a 300 psi operating boiler pressure, #844 generates 63,800 lbs of tractive effort. She was designed to comfortably haul a 1,000-ton train at 100 mph and would regularly run at 120 mph.

Significant research was put into this model. Before even laying out the frame I had compiled an 80-year timeline documenting every minor, and major, upgrade, repainting, and alteration. I had one specific goal in mind: to capture her high-speed passenger service essence. As such, I have modeled her exactly as she would have appeared in April of 1949 – oil burning, with a Sellers exhaust steam injector and painted in the famous two-tone gray of Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Gray. I am proud to say that this is one of the most accurate representations of a two-tone gray FEF-3 in the modeling world.

This model is 8-wide and precisely 1:48 scale. #844 represents the absolute apex of duel-service steam and I want this model to represent nothing less. It is powered by two L power function motors in a 1:1 gear ratio so that she has both high tractive effort and can travel at high speed. The tender is fitted with a power functions control switch and two V2 IR receivers, one dedicated to each motor, powered by a 20c 7.4V Turnigy battery.

I design all my models with usability in mind. That being said, due to the #844’s unavoidable long legs, the locomotive can technically snake its way through R56 curves but is much happier with R120. I will pride myself in saying that the tender can navigate R40 due to my engineering of a unique design to conquer the flexibility challenges that plagues centipede tenders.

Custom wheels and drivers were sourced from Brick Train Depot and Breckland Bricks while the Walschaerts valve gear is from Trained Bricks. I want to particularly thank Monty’s Trains who designed and printed all stickers you see on this model. Monty also provided the technical experience that allowed me to upgrade from a standard Lego battery pack to the vastly superior LiPo world.

I strive to make my models both detailed and accessible. As such, instructions ARE available for this model in both two-tone gray and black (accurately dated to July 1954). Additionally, both liveries come with simple and complex valve gear instructions.

Today known as The Living Legend, UP #844 is the last of a great breed and represents the absolute apex of duel-service steam as one of the most powerful, prestigious and well-engineered Northern type locomotives of all time.

I feel extremely grateful to the Union Pacific Steam Team for ensuring that, through unquantifiable amounts of continuous labor, #844’s clock is not approaching twilight, but held at dawn. She is poised to travel the high iron for time eternal, forever roaring across the heartland plains and into the rising sun.

Thank you everyone for taking time to read this post, I greatly appreciate your questions, comments and praise. This model represents the end of a personal era, and I appreciate all the encouragement and support that I received from the community along the way. Railroading and Lego modeling are my passions, and I am happy to be part of these growing communities.

Huge swordfish caught in Panama City Beach!

This is the haunted room in The Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC.

"As the tale goes, the ghost is that of a young woman dressed in pink who fell to her death in the Palm Court Atrium around 1920." She has been seen by many hotel employees.

To get this picture, I had to travel to the 5th floor in a small elevator built into the rocks that make the hotel. The elevator operator took us to the 5th floor. I had my 14 month old son on my back in his carrier. I saw the door as soon as I got off the elevator and got my camera up to shot. As soon as I paused at the door, my son starts screaming as loud as he can. I quickly try and take the picture, but the screen reads "CF card is full". NO WAY!! There was only about 35 pics on this card!! I quickly delete a couple of pics and am able to snap a quick shot. I get my son off my back and get back on the elevator. I tell the operator, "I guess he doesn't like the 5th floor." He replied, "Well, it is haunted, you know. It strange, though. The Pink Lady supposedly likes kids."

Weird.

My son calmed down as soon as we returned to the main floor.

Really weird.

Georgian mansion filled with historic keyboard instruments set in stunning Repton parkland

Hatchlands Park was built in the 1750s for Admiral Edward Boscawen and his wife Fanny. They gave architect, Robert Adam, one of his earliest commissions. His work can be seen in interiors throughout the house.

Today the mansion is a family home, containing tenant Alec Cobbe’s collection of paintings and fine furniture. Also on display is the Cobbe Collection, Europe’s largest collection of keyboard instruments associated with famous composers including Bach, Chopin and Elgar.

With over 400 acres of parkland, partly landscaped by Humphrey Repton and providing six waymarked walks, we're one of the largest country estates surrounding Greater London. You can also see a formal garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll.
