We visited the day after this accident.

In July 2012 I had a chance to do something I've wanted to do for years - kayak in Glacier Bay in SE Alaska. I was able to pull it off on a guided trip - we had excellent guides and the other castaways were fine characters - great bunch to kayak with. The trip started with great weather the first day - we did a lot of kayaking and some hiking - what a beautiful place. Second day was a long paddle but worth it - we camped near an active calving glacier that kept exploding all night - next morning we kayaked a safe distance from the front of it and just sat mesmorized - it was great; long paddle after that with a promise of more adventure - and then the rain rolled in - solid, steady, for about 40 straight hours - it was miserable - being cold and wet for so long was not fun but everyone stayed in good spirits even though we were tent bound most of the time. Oh well - guess I'll have to go back again!

This young Eastern Cottontail has been a regular visitor to the back yard in the evenings. It also likes to hide in Mom's garden under the tomato cage. Luckily it doesn't appear to do any damage to the tomatoes, but plenty of other creatures seem to like to take bites out of the ripening fruit.

Our heritage walk in the Kashmiri Gate area covers some of the sites where the rebellion of 1857 played out. Through this trail we try to weave the story of the revolt, the lives of people around involved in it & memorials left by them.

We begin the heritage walk from Nicholson’s Cemetery. Brigadier General John Nicholson had quite a reputation, as a strict no-nonsense chap who was fatally injured in 1857. The cemetery is named after him. As we spoke of his role in 1857 & his negative attitude towards Indians, we also discussed the military tactics of both the sides. Another important burial here is of Yasudas Ramachandra, a teacher of mathematics at the Delhi College. Delhi College was perhaps the most important cultural institution in 19th century Delhi & it’s around this institution that Delhi Renaissance took place. The next stop on our 1857 trail is Kashmiri Gate. It is one of the four existing gates of the capital city of Shahjahanabad, now old Delhi for us. The gate bears testimony to the assault by British forces & there is a memorial plaque for British soldiers who died fighting here. The break through at this gate turned the tide of the revolt in favour of the British. A social club from the early 20th century, the Bengali Club is located adjacent to the gate. The crude looking Bada Bazaar has some pretty details of architecture hidden behind large shop hoardings. The Lal Masjid or Fakhrul Masajid is also located here. It was built by Khaniz I Fatima in memory of her dead husband, who worked for Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. A few steps ahead are old campuses of two rival colleges: St Stephens & Hindu College. In their new location in north campus of Delhi University, they still stand opposite each other, the rivalry intact! The old St Stephens College is now office of the Chief Election Commissioner & old Hindu College is Nagar Nigam office. The most prominent & elegant building in this neighbourhood is St James Church. It is the first church of Delhi and was built by Colonel James Skinner in 1836. James Skinner, other members of Skinner family, William Fraser, Thomas Metcalfe, some of the prominent citizens of Delhi in 19th century are all buried in its churchyard. Behind St James Church stands the bungalow of William Frazer, now an office of Northern Railways. Next we walked through the campus of Ambedkar University Delhi which has a couple of colonial buildings & the first Residency in Delhi, the house of British Resident David Ochterlony. Interestingly, it is believed to be built upon the ruins of Mughal prince, Dara Shukoh’s library. The last bit of 1857 heritage walk covered a few sites on Lothian Road: the Telegraph Memorial & the remains of British Magazine. Both these are memorials to acts of bravery by British, against rebel onslaught. The Lothian Road cemetery lies at the end of this road, just before Kauriya Pul. In the end, I would like to express my thanks for the enthusiastic audience. It was an enriching experience to interact with them.

Last summer Sophal & ND Strupler visited Cambodia with their 2 kids. The trip to Cambodia has awakened a deep passion to help the 20,000 street children in Phnom Penh living on the streets. This life style perpetuates the poverty cycle by depriving these children an opportunity for growth. They wanted to do something NOW! So they started selling their Art (Painting & Photography) to raise money and help Cambodian kids get off the streets.

Strupler ART

TOGETHER WE CAN HELP CAMBODIAN KIDS GET OFF THE STREETS!

With the partnership of the Big Brother, Big Sister – “Bong Paoun Project,“ local volunteers will help street kids break the cycle of poverty allowing them to get an education so their children will not have to work on the streets of Cambodia.

Background

Sophal's story began when she was abandoned on the streets of Phnom Penh at about 3 months of age. A Swiss Red Cross nurse found her and nursed her back to health. This nurse was a friend of Sophal's current adoptive parents.

Sophal & ND have been married since 1994 and have a 10-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son.

Art Show in Fountain Valley

With the Art-Show in Fountain Valley they want to share their experiences in Cambodia. Their trip was peppered with an array of emotions, Full of joy, beauty, sadness and suffering. They are now completely committed to making a difference in the lives of Cambodian children through their passion of painting and photography.

All Paintings and Photography will be auctioned.

To mark the inauguration of the Swiss Museum of Transport in 1959, the railway and model

railway enthusiasts of Lucerne built a model representing the Gotthard north access ramp

between Erstfeld and Wassen.

They put in around 30,000 hours of voluntary work.

Ascending the mounting through helical tunnels – the Gotthard railway model shows Erstfeld

station, the two imposing bridges over the Chärstelenbach and the Intschireuss and finally the

three helical tunnels near Wassen.

The model does not show the motorway since it depicts the landscape as it was around the

end of the 1950s.

However, the locomotives and carriages making up the model trains are in some cases

considerably newer.

The Swiss Museum of Transport is grateful to the railway and model railway enthusiasts of

Lucerne for the newly designed 2007 Gotthard railway model in the rail transport hall as well

as for its loving and expert maintenance. The show runs every hour and lasts 8 minutes.

NIF

Today the fences are much stronger in the areas that have a lot of visitors.

I have had the good fortune to work in Dun Laoghaire for about fifteen years.

Dún Laoghaire is a suburban seaside town in County Dublin, about 12 km (7.5 miles) south of Dublin city centre. Formerly a major port of entry from Britain, from 1821 to 1920 it was named Kingstown.

The town's name means "fort of Laoghaire". This refers to Lóegaire mac Néill (modern spelling: Laoghaire Mac Néill), a 5th-century High King of Ireland, who chose the site as a sea base from which to carry out raids on Britain and Gaul. Traces of fortifications from that time have been found on the coast, and some of the stone is kept in the Maritime Museum.

The name is sometimes unofficially spelt as Dún Laoire or Dún Laoighre. In some cases, the old anglicised spelling Dunleary is seen … this is also how the town's name is commonly pronounced.

The harbour, one of the largest in the country, is notable for its two granite piers. The East Pier is particularly popular with walkers, and was featured in the 1996 movie Michael Collins, where Liam Neeson (as Collins) and two of his co-stars are seen walking along a seaside promenade, which is actually the Dún Laoghaire East Pier. A band is seen playing on a bandstand in this movie scene, and this is the actual bandstand on the East Pier. The bandstand was restored to its original condition in 2010 by the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company.

It took 42 years to construct the harbour, from 1817 to 1859. The obelisk near the old ferryport terminal at the harbour commemorates the construction of this harbour.

A lighthouse was at the end of the East Pier, while the new headquarters of the Commissioners of Irish Lights (the General Lighthouse Authority for Ireland) is on Harbour Road.

South of the harbour is Scotsman's Bay, where there was a Victorian seaside amusement area, with walks, shelters and baths. The walks and shelters are largely intact. The Dún Laoghaire Baths have been derelict for many years, but were repainted in bright colours in 2012. Plans for restoration of this area are much debated, and some of the more ambitious ideas have been highly controversial.

A traditional Victorian-style park, the People's Park, is at the eastern end of George's Street, and including still-functioning tea rooms.

At least one traditional "cabman's shelter" survives [I photographed two] – these were small buildings built for the drivers of horse-drawn taxis.

What do you think about this car and shot?

I really like it.
