Bosque is the name for areas of gallery forest found along the riparian flood plains of stream and river banks in the southwestern United States. It derives its name from the Spanish word for woodlands.

In the predominantly arid or semi-arid southwestern United States, the bosque is an oasis-like ribbon of green vegetation, often canopied, that only exists near rivers, streams, or other water courses. The most notable bosque is the 200-mile (320 km)-long ecosystem along the middle Rio Grande in New Mexico that extends from Santa Fe south past Socorro including the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.

Use red/blue glasses for best effect.

Anaglyph 3D is the name given to the stereoscopic 3D effect achieved by means of encoding each eye's image using filters of different (usually chromatically opposite) colors, typically red and cyan. Anaglyph 3D images contain two differently filtered colored images, one for each eye. When viewed through the "color-coded" "anaglyph glasses", each of the two images reaches one eye, revealing an integrated stereoscopic image.

Car 972 in traffic, Carondelet Street at Gravier Street.

The St. Charles line has a very long history. It opened with steam traction on 1835 September 26. Electric traction was placed in service on 1893 February 1.

The cars were built in 1923 and 1924 by the Perley A. Thomas Car Works, High Point, North Carolina (this company is now named "Thomas Built Buses"). Thomas built 73 of the 900-series cars, of which 35 remain in service.

The 900-series cars have two motors, one in each bogie ("truck"). One thing I noticed back in 1972 was that these cars accelerated slowly - very slowly. Late at night, the trip from Canal Street to S. Claiborne St. could be completed is significantly less time, because of fewer stops.

A Must View On Black and/or View On White

See where this picture was taken. [?]

I agree after looking at many photos of this cabbage whites I have to agree clint02554,,,,thanks for the ID!! I really enjoyed watching these guys/gals visiting my garden!!

Characteristics: White, with one (male) or two (female) rounded black spots on dorsal forewing. Black apical suffusion on dorsal forewing, and dark suffusion on dorsal wings nearest body.

Similar Species: Checkered White (Pontia protodice)

Larval Foodplants: Many native and introduced species of the Mustard family (Cruciferae) including the following: garden vegetables--cabbage, cauliflower, kale, mustard greens, radish; other -- nasturtium and mustard (Brassica sp.). The green larvae are economically important pests on cruciferous crops, particularly cabbage, and chemical pesticide treatments or treatments with a microbial insecticide (formulated from a bacterial species, Bacillus thuringiensis) are often required to bring populations down to economically tolerable levels.

Other Remarks: The Imported Cabbage Worm Butterfly ("Cabbage White") is the white butterfly seen every day almost everywhere in North America. Gravid females are often seen ovipositing on cabbage, nasturtium, etc. Native to Europe, this species was introduced into Canada and the eastern United States around 1860. It quickly spread, reaching California around 1883 (Wright, 1906), although the butterfly may have already occurred in California prior to that time, having been introduced by the Spanish. It occurs throughout the year, most commonly in the lowlands, although I encountered an individual once on Santiago Peak, elevation 5687 feet. In the hills north of Villa Park Dam, the Checkered White (Pontia protodice) outnumbers the Imported Cabbage Worm and might be actively competing with it if both utilize the same foodplant species in this area. In most areas, however, rapae is more abundant than protodice when both species occur together. Kerr (1918) considered rapae to be very common even at this early date.

Here's an interesting article from bug of the month 1993

BUG OF THE MONTH: April 1993

Pieris rapae, the Cabbage White Butterfly

Copyright © 1993 by Louise Kulzer

This article originally appeared in Scarabogram, April 1993, New Series No. 156, pp. 2-3.

Spring no sooner peeks around an April cloud than the cabbage butterflies are on the wing, searching out broccoli and cabbage starts, nectaring on dandelions and Luminaria flowers. Actually, cabbage butterflies are not much of a pest at all compared with cabbage root maggots. So I prefer to think of them as an ideal study population for home-bound entomologists. There are lots of them, they fly right in your yard, they have a really long season, and they have qualities as interesting as more exotic insects. They are not native, but from Europe, and compete with our native white, Pieris marginalis (formerly napi), to its detriment. All the more reason to take specimens for study!

The sex of cabbage butterflies can be readily determined. In addition to the dark spot at the outer "corner" of the forewing, upper (dorsal) side, females have two dark spots mid-wing, one above the other; males have only one. So right away you can study the proportion of females versus males over the season. There is also a tendency for early individuals to have much lighter markings than later ones, which adds interest and makes it harder to separate light cabbage butterflies from our native veined white, P. marginalis, which flies in suburban areas with good tree cover.

comparative drawing of cabbage white and veined white

In veined whites, the wing tip is unmarked, and the veins are sometimes lined in black (hence the common name). The dark vein scales may be lacking, says Pyle, in the summer, and, says Christensen, in "later broods," but in my experience unmarked individuals are seen early in the season. Veined whites can also show dark sex spots (2 in females, 1 in males) but the male spot is often absent.

Cabbage white butterflies overwinter as pupae and emerge in early spring. After mating they lay their eggs on plants of the mustard family (crucifers), but particularly relish cabbage and broccoli plants. Eggs are usually laid on the underside of the leaf, where the caterpillars also hang out. Caterpillars are a velvety green with faint white lines along the sides. They chew big holes in the leaves. If you see this kind of damage, turn the leaf over and look carefully: you can probably apprehend the culprit.

Cabbage white butterflies are easy to rear, and are great to bring into the classroom, where they will continue feeding, pupate, and emerge in about three weeks.

An interesting, easily observed behavior is the spiral flight. When a male shows interest in a female that has already mated, she indicates her lack of interest by rising, the two butterflies circling each other, until the male loses interest and drops back to the ground. The female then comes down more slowly and resumes egg-laying (Stokes 1983).

I've always wanted to do a capture-recapture study on cabbage white butterflies for a day or two and see if a population estimate in my Ballard neighborhood could be made. (You can mark butterflies by applying nail polish to the wings). This is only one of many interesting studies possible in your own back yard.

Wimborne Minster often referred to as just Wimborne is a market town in East Dorset county in South West England, and the name of the Church of England church in that town. Wimborne lies on the River Stour. It was an old Saxon settlement and the foundation of the Wimborne Minster dates back to the beginning of the 8th century. The present Minster, with its twin brown towers dominating the town, dates back to the 12th century. It is also home to the famous Quarterjack clock which is a 14th-century astronomical clock and is regarded as one of the most ancient working clocks in Europe. The casing on the wall contains the cogs which move the sun and moon around the face of the clock. The movement is in the belfry section of this beautiful old church. On the outside north wall of the Minster is a full-size Grenadier, called the Quarterjack, which strikes the quarter hours. The original figure of a monk was replaced during the Napoleonic Wars.

Wimborne Minster. What a fantastic Church building this is one of the best around. This is a Saxon church, with Norman and Gothic architecture. It is famed for its chained library and the tombs of King Ethelred, the brother of Alfred the Great, as well as the tombs of John Beaufort, Duke of Somerset, and his duchess, the maternal grandparents of King Henry VII of England. This Church is made of Dorset Limestone and New Forest Stone taken from local source. The Minster is dedicated to Saint Cuthburga the sister to Ine, King of Wessex and wife of Aldfrith, King of Northumbria who founded a Benedictine abbey of nuns at the present day minster around 705. Saint Walpurga was educated in the monastery, where she spent 26 years before travelling to Germany, following the missionary call of her mother's brother Saint Boniface. Leoba was also educated in this place. A monastery for men was also built around this time, adjacent to the abbey. Over the next hundred years the abbey and monastery grew in size and importance.

Having driven past this Theatre many times I decided to walk along the road with this building in and finally take my photos of this quaint old building. The Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne Minster, Dorset, was built in the year 1936 as a theatre and a cinema. It features a wide variety of Art Deco features which includes original chrome and Bakelite ( the old type plastic ) door handles. Threatened with demolition in 1979 for a road-building scheme that was later abandoned, the theatre fell into disrepair and closed in April 1980. After lengthy campaigning, volunteers restored the theatre throughout 1993, and the theatre re-opened to the public in November of that year. The building has many features associated with the year of the build.

The model town is one of the largest and longest established model towns in England. It depicts Wimborne at the time the model was made, in the 1950’s. It is a 1:10 scale construction , resulting in the model of the Minster being several feet high. The model shop windows accurately show the goods which the real shops were selling at the time. The exhibition also includes a model railway based on Thomas the Tank Engine, which was opened by Christopher Awdry and expanded in 2014. Children's story evenings are held at the model village. In all the time I have been around Dorset this day was the first visit for me. While still not as good as Godshill Model Village on the Isle of Wight it does remain a pleasant day out. The cafe here is very clean, good value, and pleasant staff. The day I attended here it was very hot a May bank holiday weekend. There is so much to see in this very old established town so be prepared to spend a full day here.

“It is infuriating that in this day and age, and in this country, that such a disaster could still happen. I am sick. I am saddened and I am angry. We have the laws. We have the resources. These tragedies, on this scale, should no longer be happening.”

our Government officials have ordered this mine shut down 61 times, this year alone. Safety violations were not a concern to Don Blankenship, Massey's chief executive officer.

Blankenship made a statement today, that the other mines will have to make up for ''business damage''.

...as 25 families prepare for the funerals of their loved ones, the coal company concerns are not for the grieving families, or with the rescue operations, but production loss!

I also read that the coal from this mine does not go towards local energy, it is being shipped to China.

Benicia Capitol State Historic Park is a state park in Benicia, California. The park is dedicated to California’s third capitol building, where the California State Legislature convened from February 3, 1853 to February 24, 1854. It is the only pre-Sacramento capitol that survives. The park includes the Fischer-Hanlon House, an early Benicia building that was moved to the property and converted into a home in 1858, after the legislature departed. Benicia Capitol State Historic Park just off the city's main street also includes a carriage house, workers' quarters and sculptured gardens.

California’s Capitals

The first capital existed before statehood, under both Spanish and Mexican rule. From 1775 to 1846, Monterey was the capital of Alta California. On July 7, 1846, Commodore John D. Sloat raised the American flag over Monterey.

In 1849, the new constitution crafted at Monterey’s Colton Hall made the city of San Jose the seat of California’s first state government. During San Jose’s 1849-1851 session, the building’s low ceilings, bad lighting and poor ventilation led the lawmakers to seek another location. Dubbed the

“Legislature of a Thousand Drinks,” for calls to close the session at the nearest saloon, this group was happy to accept

General Mariano Vallejo’s offer to build a new capitol in Vallejo at no cost to them.

On January 5, 1852, they arrived to find total chaos. That day the Sacramento Daily Union reported: “The furniture, fixtures, etc., are not yet in their places; many of them have not yet

arrived . . . no printing materials . . . music of the saw and hammer heard night and day.” There was almost no local housing, food or laundry service. Eleven days later, the legislators moved to Sacramento. On January 3, 1853, the fourth session began in Vallejo but moved mid-session — to the newly constructed city hall in Benicia.

The town, named for General Vallejo’s wife, Doña Francisca Benicia Carrillo de Vallejo, offered them the structure that was to be their city hall. Its interior pillars were carved from the masts of salvaged ships abandoned in San Francisco Bay during the gold rush. The town’s meager amenities, however,

caused the legislators to leave in 1854 during the fifth session.

On March 4, the governor, the state officers and members of the legislature boarded the paddle-wheeler Wilson G. Hunt and headed upstream to Sacramento. At the confluence of

the Sacramento and American rivers, Sacramento had had one brief tenure as California’s capital. Despite its history

of floods and fires, the Legislature again chose Sacramento as the state capital.

Lawmakers held sessions at its county courthouse from 1854 to 1869. Construction on today’s Sacramento capitol began in 1860. Eager to meet in their own space, lawmakers moved into the present building in 1874, five years before it was completed.

Benicia’s fast-moving, exciting days were over, but its fortunes would grow in other directions. Benicia, a busy port city, was served by the international Pacific Mail Steamship

Company. Later, the Southern Pacific Railroad created a terminal and ferry crossing there. Its many educational institutions earned Benicia the nickname “Athens of the West.”

After a short stint as the Solano County Courthouse, the building housed Episcopal church services and the Benicia Grammar School.

Eventually a wing was built as the headquarters for Benicia’s Fire Department, and the public library also moved there. In 1951, the California Division of Beaches and Parks acquired the Benicia Capitol and restored the chambers to look as they might have appeared between January 1853 and February 1854. The State Park and Recreation Commission later reclassified the property as a State Historic Park.

In Essaouira, all the boats and doors are blue.

In the morning I went to Charlottenburg, where I visited three museums opposite the castle. First I visited the Broehan-Museum, a nice quiet museum with private collection of art nouveau and art deco pieces. All the work is collected by businessman Karl Broehan cince the 1960s, most work dating from 1890 to 1939, consisting paintings like Hans Baluschek, porcelain, furnuture, glass and silver. Then I visited the Museum Berggruen with earlier works of Picasso and paintings of Paul Klee and Matisse. I also took a look at the new collection Scharf-Gerstenberg by the Surrealists and their forerunners. It presents the holdings of the "Stiftung Sammlung Dieter Scharf zur Erinnerung an Otto Gerstenberg". The spectrum of artists ranges from Piranesi, Goya and Redon to Dalí, Magritte, Max Ernst and Dubuffet. At the Weihnachtsmarkt it was freezing cold. I was the only customer, aeting none of the big sausages, just some fried potatoes and mushrooms.

In the Name of God, Jens Galschiøt 2006.

The sculpture has just been exhibited for more than two months in front of the Cathedral of Copenhagen. Other copies have recently been displayed at the World Social Forum in Kenya. The artist is envisaging exhibitions on St. Peter’s Sq. in Rome, in the European Parliament, in the US and some other sites. The project is an artistic comment to the extreme Bible fundamentalists – with President Bush and the Pope in the lead – who preach sexual abstinence until marriage as the only method to avoid HIV contamination and unwanted pregnancy.

They will bomb back sexual education and ban information on contraception that they see as an invitation to voluptuousness. In the same token the Roman Catholic Church asserts that contraception is impermissible according to the biblical doctrines, so they advocate the absurd allegation that only ‘unprotected sex’ is admissible. The consequences may be disastrous for the proliferation of AIDS and HIV and so the result will be increased suffering, Jens Galschiot says and continues: The sculpture is not a comment on the issue of abortion or stem cells, but should be seen as an artistic advocacy for the right to contraception and unprejudiced sexual education.

Symbolism of the sculpture

The pregnant teenager symbolizes innocence. The child that has been lead astray due to ignorance, impulsiveness or maybe is the victim of rape is mercilessly exposed to the ultimate punishment. The association to Jesus as the innocent sacrificial lamb is apparent.

The sculpture is not a global accusation against Christianity. On the contrary, I admire those Christians who take the Gospel’s claim of charity seriously – and act accordingly. I think that progressive Christians should dissociate themselves from the abuse of ‘their’ God for the sake of a reactionary contraception policy, Jens Galschiot declares and continues: To sustain the debate we have uploaded comprehensive documentation on our website:

www.aidoh.dk. There you’ll also find a debate forum.

The sculpture is close to the Cathedral of Aarhus

Weathervane Playhouse in Akron, Ohio, presents Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" -- live on stage from Jan. 29 to Feb. 15.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Set during the early 1950s, "A Raisin in the Sun" tells the timeless story of one family’s grasp for a piece of the American Dream — and the explosive backlash that erupts when they seek to become the first black family to move into an all-white neighborhood.

The play revolves around the divergent dreams and conflicts within three generations of the Youngers, a black family living in a cramped apartment in Chicago’s racially segregated Southside neighborhood. The family’s struggle for dignity and their quest for a better life shape the powerful drama in this ground-breaking masterpiece of the American theater

Younger family matriarch Lena (whom everyone calls “Mama”) is the strong, moral heart of her clan, but she clashes frequently with her extended family. The family’s “man of the house” is her son Walter Lee, who works as a chauffeur but remains frustrated by his dead-end position in both life and the workplace. Walter’s wife is Ruth, who masks her discontent by directing all her energies toward her husband and their young son, Travis. Walter’s sister, Beneatha, is a young dreamer who dabbles in various hobbies and activities but embraces a strong desire to become a doctor.

When the insurance money from her deceased husband’s insurance policy comes through, Mama dreams of moving to a new home and a better neighborhood. But Walter Lee, who describes himself as a volcano full of internalized regrets and pipe dreams, has other plans: he wants to buy a liquor store and be “his own man.” Meanwhile, Beneatha wants to spend the money on her medical schooling. The tensions within the family and the blatant prejudice they receive from outside their home combine to shape the rich dramatic texture in this seminal American play.

In 1848 a Silesian farmer, Franz Weickert gathered together a group of people interested in forming a new community free of religious persecution in South Australia. Weckert financed the voyage for many of the people and he obtained the services of a Father Kranewitter, a Jesuit brother and two others called Schriener and Sadler. They took up land at Sevenhill near Clare and called the local stream the Tiber (after the River in Rome) and the place, Sevenhill after the seven hills of Rome. Franz Weckert never recovered his money from the settlers and died a poor man at Sevenhill in 1875. The three Jesuits erected a building on their land and established the first Catholic seminary in Australia. Local Catholics contributed substantially to Jesuit funds after their return from the Victorian goldfields and the first church was finished in 1856. The current church was a later structure that was started in 1861. The Catholic Polish community of nearby Polish Hill River also contributed to the new church. It was officially opened in November 1866. A crypt was constructed underneath the church, for the burial of the Jesuit fathers.

Over the next few years the college was constructed, clearly with plans for further additions, which never occurred. The foundation stone for the college was laid in 1868 and the college was completed by 1871 when press advertising for students began. Among the early students were Peter and Donald MacKillop, brothers of Mary MacKillop. The college was officially opened in 1875. It catered for around 40 students a year until it closed in 1885. Apart from the college and church, the Jesuit brothers brought the wine industry to the Clare Valley. They established the first vineyard of the district in 1851 (about the same time as the first vines were planted in the Barossa and also at Langhorne Creek).
