Juba, 10 December 2024: At a press conference in Juba, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, Nicholas Haysom, acknowledged the profound challenges facing South Sudan, including intercommunal conflict, the economic crisis, climate shocks and a rising cholera outbreak. While these challenges are real, he said, so is the tremendous opportunity to choose hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. "I call on South Sudan’s leaders to carry forward this hope by making every effort to recapture the optimism and good intentions that independence had brought to their people. The only way they can do so is by fully implementing the peace deal they themselves wrote into existence. I remain convinced that with decisive actions, a unified approach and moral courage, peace is not only possible, it’s inevitable."

We celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied and multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

We want to thank you for your interest in our work and thanks for visiting our work on Flickr, we do appreciate you and the contributions you make in furthering our interest in photography and on social media in general.

Among historic buildings, the Frieze was not a favorite, plus I'm looking foward to the new dorm that will be built there...but seeing this actually happen still makes this preservationist a bit mad.

The image shows an interior view of Casa Cisterna, a cave house museum located in the Sassi di Matera, Italy. The museum showcases the traditional way of life in the ancient cave dwellings.

The items displayed are typical objects of daily use from the historical period when people lived in these caves.

The large metal grate with chains hanging on the wall is likely a historical tool or a representation of one, possibly for agricultural or domestic purposes, such as a large pot hanger or part of a system for processing materials.

Other tools, such as the curved implements on the left and the small buckets hanging below, further illustrate the practical nature of life in the Sassi area.

The high bed, a common feature in these homes, was designed to protect people from humidity, allowing air to circulate beneath it.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) gave Peru 18 months to implement recommendations from its World Heritage Committee, the InfoturPeru website wrote.

During the committee's recent 39th session in Bonn, Germany, UNESCO decided not to include the majestic Inca citadel in its list of endangered world heritage list, pointing to the Peruvian state's efforts to tackling a series of problems through multi-sector cooperation.

Peruvian culture officials had said that there was fear prior to the meeting that UNESCO would include Machu Picchu on the list due to issues like overcrowding, poor tourist infrastructure and lack of waste management.

The number of tourists that visit Machu Picchu has almost doubled over the past decade from less than 600,000 in 2004 to over a million last year, according to government figures posted by Fertur travel agency. Since 2011, the average daily number of visitors to Machu Picchu has far exceeded the daily limit of 2,500 agreed to by Peru and UNESCO.

Earlier this year, the government approved a US$43.7 million Master Plan for Machu Picchu that called for a dramatic “reconceptualization” of the site. The plan involves creating a visitor and orientation center in the gorge below the mountain-top ruins that will serve as the entry point into Machu Picchu, as well as the creation of new routes up to and through the site.

The government's 2015-2019 plan also calls for building a new exit ramp, a help center and installing toilets within the ruins.

Along the routes within the citadel, visitors will face time limits at specific points to prevent bottlenecks, while they will also be joined by certified guides to prevent tourists from roaming around Machu Picchu on their own.

Many people who visited Machu Picchu before the heyday of large tour groups have lamented the changed, but UNESCO's chief, Kishore Rao, recently praised Peruvian officials for their management of the Inca site during a recent visit.

“Their labor reflects the perfect state of conservation and maintenance of the site, which is admired by the whole world,” Rao was reported saying. “To be in Machu Picchu signifies the realization of a personal dream.”

To tackle the triple planetary crisis, the world needs

up-to-date science on the state of the environment.

But numbers alone are not enough, scientific findings must be accessible to policymakers if they are to spark change.

The Dialogue explores how UNEP and a series of international accords, known as Multilateral Environmental Agreements, can re-enforce the links between science and policymaking.
