Just for Halloween...
These two Jack-o-Lanterns were designed and carved by my daughter. The one with the big teeth is supposed to be some kind of carnivorous fish thing.
I photographed them in the dark with my camera controls set to full manual. Then I modified them a little in post using ACDSee 5 Pro exclusively. Some of the modifications included adding a water reflection effect to emphasize the sense that they are water creatures. Then, since I have fallen in love with ACDSee's Orton Effect, I added that as well, but increased the transparency to reduce the contrast and retain more detail. Overall, I think it gave the image a bit of a painterly feel without completely divorcing it from the photograph that it really is.

I used to photograph, graphically, such 'finds' in the sands of Wrightsville Beach.
This one has been desaturated to black and white,
and then toned this tint in Photoshop.

Pukamani poles:
Ceremonial performances involving song and dance are at the core of Indigenous Australian life. Pukamani poles from the Tiwi islands north of Darwin in the Northern Territory are grave posts which refer to life, death and rebirth. Pukamani designs are to make posts like people. Once the funerary ceremonies are complete, they are left to disintegrate. Posts with shapes like heads are believed to be female, whilst the projecting "arms" of others indicate the male gender.

The girl who inspired Cristofano Allori's Judith with the Head of Holofernes was known as La Mazzafirra … she was Maria de Giovanni Mazzafirri and for a time Allori's lover. When she left him, his heart broke, and what better story than Judith's to illustrate the intensity of his loss.
The apocryphal Book of Judith tells that the brave widow spent three chaste evenings with the invading Babylonian general, Holofernes. On the third, Judith managed to get Holofernes utterly drunk. She took his sword, cut off his head, and returned with both to her jubilant Bethulian people. Threat of invasion over.
In Allori's painting, La Mazza is Judith, La Mazza's interfering mother is Judith's maid, and poor disconsolate Allori is Holofernes.
Allori painted many versions of the concept. The original is at the Palazzo Pitti. An infinitely better one is in the British Royal Collection and is on public view from time to time, in the Queen's Gallery.
Looking at a reproduction of the Queen's version, I felt La Mazza's mother seemed somehow an afterthought, added for the sake of the original story in which Judith's maid accompanied her during her visits to the Babylonian camp. Some amateurish retouching of an image and the result is shown below. Click on through, please!
Two prints of my version exist: neither is in the Queen's hands, but both take pride of place on their owners' walls. Where? Not even EIIR knows ...
