I drove to Ocean City, NJ, the other night to observe and photograph the planting moon which occurs three days after the harvest moon. The ancients thought the moon was an omen as to how good next year's crops would be - the bigger and bluer the moon appeared over the ocean the better the crops. Looks like next year will be a big one. :o)
I thought it might be educational to see what my Red Kelly Manga Batlesuit costume would look like riding a scale Bolo sentient A.I robot tank....which of course feature in Keith Laumer's (and others!) futuristic Science Fiction stories.
This particular Bolo, Unit N.E.D-1880 of the Line, is a Mark XXXX Bolo “Titanus” Stellar Siege Engine assigned to the 1st Armoured Regiment of the Dinochrome Brigade.
He’s 100 metres long and weighs a modest 49,000 metric tonnes sitting on his four wee tracks.
The main gun is a 105 centimetre Hellmouth anti-proton beam. Secondary armament consists of two restricted elevation Hellrail anti-starship rail-guns. Tertiary weapons are four 95 cm independently turreted Hellbore hydrogen plasma cannon. All in all, frightfully Apocalyptic..
Well, I did say I was a fan of Keith Laumer's books!
I keep a larger photograph of the hull badge which I designed in the "Fantastique Badge Cloak" Photoset, on my Flickr page, it's picture 11.
For the composite photo Adrian Maiolli's picture contributed the costume element, a photo which he took of me wearing the costume at a convention. The sky background comes from a piccy I took at the beach one day. Funny, never noticed the two moons!
The planetscape is built out of texture slabs I lifted from a picture I took of a housebrick found in the backyard. Good old NED is tooled up from a picture I took many years ago of a tank I found parked outside the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Reasonably sure it's an old Centurian Mk5 Main Battle Tank that saw service with the Aussie army in the 1950s,60s and 70s, until they were replaced with Leopard AS1s in the 70s. Vickers would probably be bemused by the upgrade!
Oh....assume I'm wearing seriously magnetic boots. Wouldn't want to fall under those churning tracks!

some simple picture therapy from my walk this morning. dang, it's been a while since i've taken a self portrait! i've been feelin' all turned around and backwards lately, but i know once all the dust settles, i'll come out of the storm stronger and more sure of myself than ever. until then, i've got the trees to keep my head on straight!
happy monday, folks!

LeCount Hollow Beach, sometimes called mcGuire's Landing, faces east onto unfettered ocean, so the surf here can be pretty impressive compared to the Cape Cod Bay or Nantucket Sound. It is administered by the Town of Wellfleet rather than the National Seashore, so it is not much affected by the idiocy that's going on in Congress right now. Quite expansive but with a small parking lot, it may not get as crowded as neighboring National Seashore beaches.
But don't be too quick to jump in the water. Look closely at the wave where it is about to crest on the right of the image. A shadow seems to lurk within it. A shark? Perhaps. For the last few summers they have gathered in vast shivers off the Atlantic shore of Cape Cod, to languish in the warming waters there and feast on the seals that colonize the Monomoy Islands. There have been at least two shark bite injuries here in the past few years, though no one has died.
This is a relook at a previous photo which I had actually vandalized even more severely once before. Close observers of the original photo will note the angle of the light on the clouds and on the surf don't align perfectly. That is because I shot the sky over the parking lot at the Stop 'n Shop on an entirely different day and pasted it over the surf way back in the original iteration of this image, and it has lived there ever since.

I very nearly deleted this one as I wasn't convinced it was working. I'd put in couple of hours on it so I thought 'what the heck'. So here you go. Seems like a fairy tale vibe to this one :)
My model Sarah-Jane is shot against a neutral grey background and composited into the scene.
All backgrounds are themselves composites of various elements to create a 'hopefully' dramatic theatrical quality.

Proud to present the cover art that I created for Silver; a story by author Talia Vance: taliavance.com/books.php#silver
Published by Flux.
The book will be in stores later this year; available from September 2012
I have full permission to show the cover at my profiles; I will show the actual cover with text also pretty soon.
It was a wonderful collaboration with Llewelyn Worldwide, I hope you like the result.
Brianna Paxton has been invisible to guys since the eighth grade. She's pretty enough, it's just that no one bothers to look. There's almost nothing that can't be explained with science, and Brianna has a theory: she's missing the pheromone that attracts people to one another. Brianna's theory is shot to hell in one frozen, silver moment, when time stops and Blake Williams not only sees her, he recognizes something inside her that she's been hiding from even herself.
Before Brianna fully understands who and what she is, she accidentally binds her soul to Blake. Forced to find a way to reconcile forbidden love and her bloody heritage, Brianna discovers that there's nothing pointless about her, and Blake may be in the most danger of all.

This illustration started out as a way to help visualize what the deck on the back of our house is going to look like when it is finally done. It ended up being a piece for an Illustration Friday theme too. Why use 3D software when you can do it all with pixels and Photoshop? Yes, this was done pixel by pixel and then some raster art frames and shadows were added to m ake the piece look a bit nostalgic and antique.
Far out man. Got carried to a plane of higher consciousness with this vividly expressive flashback. What a trip man. Make love not war. Peace.
Seriously though... this cube was made from scratch using the Gimp. I used PhotoMasterGreg's excellent tutorial
Personal work.
I'm very happy with the outcome;simply because it's exactly what I imagined in my dreams.
To Hana: I hope this is in any way an inspiration/help to you. Good luck! ;-)

All Bokeh.. actually two 'all bokeh' images sandwiched together.. one is obvious, but the yellows in this came from a closer bokeh shot of a few backlit fading bamboo leaves.
from a fresh visit in my Mom's basically winterized and cleared garden plots.. this one blossom at the base of a trellis appeared to be the last of its kind for 2006.
Light was from light from electronic flash... bounced off a small reflector about 3 times the size of the flash bube area, and placed low at left.. so low that much of the light is coming from beneath the petals. Probably about 2/3rds the look of this image is due to that lighting, while the rest is due to some judicious noise reduction, augmented by "smartsharpening" of the central portion in Photoshop CS2.
Before and after comparison of a nostalgic revisit and re-imagining of my first ever composite I posted on Flickr over a year ago.
The finished version is HERE
This set of four images of the saucer magnolia in my driveway were done by the light of my off-camera flash, softened with a semi-inflated plastic Walmart shopping bag. I gathered the opening around the flash while encouraging the bag to stay as air-filled as possible.. like a big pillow/bubble... which I would hold wherever I wanted the soft light to come from. All educated guesswork, since I couldn't see the results before the shot, but could adapt by checking the review screen on the camera. I used the 18-55mm kit lens set toward the wider-angled end to get a more intimate perspective.
Some tonal tweaking, selective sharpening, and background suppression done in Photoshop.

Oh and got one of those as seen on TV Iron Gym's for the hubs to do pull ups with. I couldnt do one pull up! BUT it is extra fabulous for doing situps without someone to hold your feet.
