Poppies grew in a crack in asphalt while we were gone. I like it.
Asphalt cracks and heaves during freezing and warming temperatures in Alaska. Many people routinely have driveways redone. Think we need to redo ours before trying to sell the house?

Last fall I took my last good fall photo from this location. It's always been a tough nut for me to crack, unpredictable weather patters creating dense cloud cover over the scene, heavy haze obscuring the peaks in the distance, trying to find a composition within the chaos. There's an angle I hadn't attempt before. The high vantage. There is a large boulder at this location, 20 foot tall form the road. From that boulder you're above the foreground clutter, you have an unobstructed view, which is really great... If you're fine with heights, I am not. Yesterday, golden hour had set in, and while I wasn't insistent on getting a shot, I did have a few locations in mind. This was one of them. Upon getting here there was another photographer on the ground snapping hand held, he was trying to find a deep composition, so as he had arrived first he had the run of the areas he wanted. Really, it's etiquette, but he was having the same problems I always have here. My friend who was with me told me about the view from the boulder.... So up I went despite my legs being like jelly and not knowing how to get back down there I was, snapping photos from the top of a boulder on the side of the road, trying not to think of the nearly 200 foot drop inches from where my tripod sat....

I set out this month to turn in one photo, every single day. I know full well I’ve turned in some seriously sub par shots. That’s not the point though, the point is to get out, enjoy the scenery, and come across jewels before the leaves drop, leaving me waiting one the next project to come along. This view, while lacking in the typical mood I love to shoot with, still offered something interesting to me. Something eye catching, the road following the mountain with the washed out fall colors painting the mountain side, a little sunlight playing on the opposite side of the ridge.

If you look carefully there is a man sitting on the bottom of the slipway...I only noticed when processing the shot. Maybe a crew member - he didn't look in need of a Lifeboat but so many people do. I pay tribute to Lifeboat crews everywhere...
Padstow Lifeboat Station is located on the east side of Trevose Head, to the west of the Cornish town of Padstow. This RNLI station and slipway was completed in 2006. It was purpose built for their then newest vessel, ‘The Spirit of Padstow’. JGP has carried out stability inspections of the cliff, as well as inspections of the stations piled supporting structure.
The station was constructed at the base of Upper Devonian Slate cliffs (Trevose Slate Formation). Immediately south of the station are the ‘Merope Rocks’, a rocky promontory comprising a Dolerite intrusion. These rocky outcrops provide the station with a degree of protection from the sea. However, the lifeboat station is subject to considerable wave energy dissipated by the beach beneath.
I took this shot back on Oct 19th. A lovely area, with beautiful glow through a valley. The sun had JUST dipped behind the ridge way in the back. I spent months looking at these images and unable to decide whether I liked them or not. Finally, with my new editing equipment I finally adjusted the colors to a point that I felt confident with posting them. I did have to cut these down a bit, there was some vignette on the corners caused by the filters. This particular area is a just a pull off on the Blue Ridge Parkway, not an overlook. I do hope you enjoy.

So, I'm waiting for sunset, focused in on my scene... The Fog started to break, but only for a breath, and nothing else shown through the mist. I did what any responsible photographer would do, and recomposed the scene. I went from grand scale, to local environment. This boulder was around 20, or 25 feet tall, right on the edge of the road. I did my best to try different focal lengths, perspectives, and decided at last to shoot it in portrait orientation. Focus stacked, and switched to B&W to help really show the contrast. I don't often use B&W but sometimes a scene looks better this way.

The Toren van Goedereede (Goederede Tower) is a gray square brick tower in Goedereede, Netherlands, 39.5 metres (130 ft) high, belonging to the Catharina church. It was built in 1512. From 1552 to 1912 the tower served as a lighthouse, and went through various changes during this period. Today it has been restored and is a museum, housing a carillon.
Church tower
The original tower was part of a large parish church in the then-prosperous fishing and trading port. Adriaan Florenszoon Boeyens (1459–1523), the future Pope Adrian VI, was pastor of the church. During a great fire in Goedereede in 1482 the old "Katharina Church" and its tower were destroyed. A new church was erected in 1512 beside a giant new tower, which still stands today.[3] A large bell that sounded the hours was cast in 1519, with the Latin inscription, Est mea vox grata, quia sum Maria vocata et Georgius Waghevens Me fecit Anno Domini MCCCCCXVIII (My voice is welcome, because I am called Maria and George Waghevens made Me in the year of our Lord 1518.) A second bell was added in 1647.
Lighthouse
The tower and the windmill in 1910
Although at first unlit, the tower served as a landmark to help ships navigate. From 1552 the tower served as a lighthouse. The light originally came from an open coal fire.
Goederede went into a long decline, losing trade to better-sited ports. There were insufficient funds to maintain the church. In 1706 the dilapidated building was pulled down, but the tower was preserved. In 1823, the spire of the church was removed to improve use of the tower as a lighthouse. On 26 February 1834 a 45 metres (148 ft) high light with optics was installed. The optics were replaced in 1879. In 1908 the tower was equipped with rotating optics with a light intensity of 180,000 candlepower. In 1912 the lighthouse was extinguished when the West Head Lighthouse in Ouddorp came into use.

I spent some time running around looking for moody clouds, and light painted mountains. I saw this particular scene but wasn't certain I would be able to capture it. The foreground was being blown around in high winds, the cloud layer kept dropping and obscuring the scene, but I made my best attempt. This was taken off the Blue Ridge Parkway a few miles from Water Rock Knob. These mountains were originally going to be my final composition for the day, and you can get a sense as to why, the layers, textures and streaks of light giving you a lovely contrast of weather right after a storm. I get a few different angles, but this was hte one I finally settled on, I wished I had brought my 100-400 lens for this, or even my teleconverter, but in the end I think this captured well.
