So, spring is slowly rolling back through my mountains. At this elevation the trees aren't really budding yet, but at sunset with the sun in the background it hides that to an extent. This is Cowee Mountain Overlook along the blue ridge parkway, one of my favorite places to shoot sunset, that's both accessible, and gives a stunning view. Of course I knew what the weather conditions were before I went, and had planned to hit Craggy visitor center. I wasn't even going to stop here, but I noticed that the rays were really clear at this overlook, so I took a chance. This was an hour and a half before sunset. After taking this shot I drove on, only to discover that the rays were behind me, and the clouds ahead were not as energetic. So, in the interest of saving the drive, and not missing a shot I went back to ride out sunset on hopes and dreams.

So, I was in a BAD mood today. Had been told off for attempting to fix a situation. So, I did what comes natural, grabbed my photo gear, ran up into the mountains and captured some interesting photos. This one has been cropped, I used a program to layer three images on top of one another for a decent bracketed exposure and I think those crepuscular rays look pretty decent :D

It never ceases to amaze me how a little light changes a view. This of course is Looking Glass Rock once more, instead of sunset, or afternoon light I opted to travel down here at 4 in the morning, setup a composition slowly, painstakingly... and not to mention in frigid temperatures. Not that it was very cold as far as the ambient temperature's were concerned, no it was only 37f, not awful... No the real problem was the wind, chill you to the bone in moments. If you want shots like this, you have to wait, be patient, not let the weather dissuade you. Photography takes setup, concentration, and the forethought to bring gloves. [No, seriously, I desperately need to get some dedicated gloves for this.] I watched other photographers come, give up because the clouds were blocking the first rays of light from the sun, and that to me is tragic. Wait a bit longer, salvage the shot, and plan for next time. I presently am waiting for a thermal inversion at this location, but that is all about patience, and a bit of luck.

I was set on taking a sunset shot today, but wasn't sure where I wanted the photo at. I recalled an area out past Cherokee, towards Clingmans dome that had a few picturesque valleys that had potential. Neither panned out, on the way back out, I was taking note of the waterfalls, the textures, the moss, the lay of the land. So, not admitting defeat I stopped at the urging of a friend and began composing a shot at one of the more relaxing creeks/waterfalls. Of course, me being me, I wanted to shoot from the middle of the creek, without waders, in water still too cold to dunk my less that water resistant boots in, I opted to balance o na few rocks in the middle. This is the result of roaming, and working to find my composition. Enjoy.

A few days ago while riding along the Blue Ridge Parkway I saw this waterfall next to the road. I didn't have my camera with me at the time, and more over the falls weren't even slightly illuminated. I made a note in my head, and re focused on trying to find the controlled burns the park service was conducting, but I never did find them. So, today on my birthday I decided to make a day of returning to the falls and seeing how a good photo would look, I'm glad I did, this waterfall has no name. So, my roomate has decided this will now be known as "Fox Falls". It's a tributary of the Woodfin Cascades between Waynesville and Cherokee. It's only visible during the late fall and early spring.

Spring is gearing up here in the mountains. It wont be long before the full bloom occurs. Green leaves everywhere. A nice uniform color through these hills. I'm looking forward to it, there are places I want to go, spots I want to photograph. This particular photo is a stitched panorama of the entire Cowee Mountain overlook. Seven images across, each image made up of 3 images stacked together. While I have other images of this sunset, I wanted to share a pano that I was proud of.

Last year during fall I traveled with a friend to a place called Cliffside Lake. I found several compositions I wanted to use, but this was a composition I worked out quickly in the moment. A friend walking out over the lake on a fallen log, surrounded by the fall colors and fading glow, a little backlight on his face and head. These small moments in time don’t afford us a lot of wiggle room most of the time. I was shooting a 10-24mm lens for a different composition, and just went with it here. I sat on this photo for a year, and earlier today I pulled it out and went to work on the edit. Sometimes it’s worth the wait.

This is my very first focus stack attempt and also the first time I have ever found one of these amazing moths. I found it in a very dense area with lots of broken wood on the floor from the pine trees, there was also hundreds of really tall ferns and that is what it´s holding on to, the stalk of a fern close to the ground. A good enough shelter from sun and wind helping it rest during the day and me to get a still enough photo of it : )
Technically, this was made of 33 images stacked in Zerene stacker, at f2.8 / ISO 160 / 200th of sec
Zooooom for super detail !!
Thankyou all for the support, it´s VERY appreciated : )
I was meant to be at Looking Glass Falls when I took this photo. Getting the moody sky over the mountains, and the granite face as my main subject. That didn't happen, I was out and about doing laundry, talking with friends, getting food. Ran out of time. This shot was composed in the parking lot of the restaurant we went to after chores, much to the chagrin of my friends. I was just chatting, watching the sky, seeing this interesting play on light. The mountains in the background getting clobbered by the rain, creating a natural contrast to play on. This of course is an HDR image, I wanted to pull some more color from the sky, and still I muted the blues down substantially to get a clean composition.

Yeah, I was getting some dirty looks in the parking lot. Not my fault the best place to get the photo is where you want to drive :p

The squall on the right of the frame was rapidly approaching the moorland plateau where i was hiking. We had some strong winds on Exmoor today, so i had to work fast to find a composition and take a couple of shots before the rain hit. Had to compromise on ISO and aperture in these conditions but had something to show for the soggy trip! (f/6.3, 24 mm, 1/60th sec at ISO 160).

So, I had actually given up hope in finding a suitable location to shoot sunrise. my first pick was inside a cloud. washed out, so I went to a backup location that I just KNEW was perfect.... sun was rising behind me. Tried three other locations with similar results. I was defeated, so on my way back home from much further than I wanted to try I pulled over onto the shoulder of the road, and checked my sun tracker app one last time.... Low and behold there it was, with ten minutes to get set up before rise I pulled everything out and hoped the mist I was sitting in would clear enough for the sun to shine through. I wasn't disappointed, and I hope I managed to do it some justice as the light just exploded around me.
