Off of junction 215 near the Devils Courthouse on the Blue Ridge parkway you can find some waterfalls. This shot was taken Oct 24th, and I finally sat down and re edited it. The CPL wasn;t set correctly as you can see, there's quite a bit of glare I didn't see on the small screen. Regardless I prefer this version of the shot.

Taken yesterday inside my conservatory and bought for the purpose but will be a nice addition on my patio when I have finished having a play with a few vintage lenses...this was taken using a Sony A7RM2 with a Pentacon 1.8 attached but to get so close a Viltrox NEX to Nik adapter then a Nikon to M42 adapter - both taking the glass further away and acting like tele converters. A tiny bit of diffusion added in Photoshop...

I had hoped for an epic vista for sunset today, but unfortunately a storm rolled through killing the dramatic light. I had gotten on the scene about an hour and a half early to really lock in my composition, and prepare the first exposure settings. Once I realized the storm was rolling through and sunset was a bust I decided to try something I have never done properly before... A full panorama. I wasn't sure it would work out, but here is my very first fully stitched pano.

A marshy swamp in the mountains? I know, crazy right? This sits at around 3,800ft in elevation between Clay and Macon County in Western North Carolina. I had considered doing a big impressive sunset over the swamp here, but found this composition by the lakeside as the light was waning a bit. So I scuttled my plans to try and get some decent light shooting from the road and hunkered down on the soft wet ground shooting across the swamp into this mountain top in the distance. Found this log in the foreground, unfortunately I ignored my own advice and didn't bend this sapling back and it sits prominently in the bottom right. Otherwise I enjoy this shot, the colors, contrast, light reflections.

Recently, when I rubbed my head in Chicago, a genie appeared and began swirling around the Willis Tower. The genie granted me three wishes. My first wish was for Flickr to be fully functioning smoothly without bad pandas. Clearly annoyed, the genie told me this was impossible and unreasonable and that, as a result, all my wishes were denied. So the point is ... don't rub genie the wrong way :) Thanks for viewing! Wishing you a (reasonably) great week :)

'Last Sun' and 'First Light' is a series of photos taken on Dec. 31, 2022 and Jan. 1st, 2023.
On both days, I used a fixed camera setting to take the photos, resulting sometimes in over- or underexposure.
It is interesting how the fixed settings (aperture, exposure time and iso) reflect the mood, lightness or dimness of the respective days.
'Last Sun' was taken with a 35mm lens, iso 100, f.8 and 1/60.
'First Light' was taken with a 70-200mm lens, iso 160 (400 for the darkest shades), f.4 and 1/200.
No cropping (3x2) except occasional 4x3.

Once again, stepping back into the past, this is one of my favorite images from 2020 brought to life with a new editing technique. I spent some time working on bringing out the colors, and the details of the image to show one of the more majestic views right alongside the Blue Ridge parkway. This scenic vista stretches out before you form the Mile High Campground on the southern most end of the parkway, giving you a glimpse into the magical world that awaits visitors, or long time residents. Sometimes it pays to stop what you’re doing, leave the hustle and bustle for a while, and just look off into sunset from atop a mountain.

A few miles down the road from my previous waterfall shot, this epic scene unfolds in the curve of the road. This is the upper portion of Sunburst falls. The lower portion of this waterfall is truly epic, however, I didn't trust myself to get down the bank, and back up, and still have time to shoot my second failed sunset in two days. I decided to go for the easy, obvious shot. With a little editing, some color manipulation I think I managed to get a decent composition together, the water flowing through the rocks, the moss, the leaves. I love photography, but man.... finding great light is such a pain.

Before I headed to Looking Glass Falls I stopped because I saw this particular scene. Well, not precisely. The clouds had just begun cresting the mountain tops, for around ten minutes I spent some time trying a few compositions, nothing was really working for me. Finally, as the clouds began to descend and eventually framed this. So, like any photographer presented with an opportunity, I shot it. I'm not completely pleased with the outcome, the mist makes it appear as though some areas are out of focus. Despite that, the light is nice, the framing is interesting, leads to some intrigue. Give me your thoughts.

So, much like I recently acquired a 10-24mm lens, I also squired a 50-140 Telephoto. I have a Teleconverter for it, but I wanted a bit more reach for some of the Elk in the area. This is the sun dropping down at Cowee Mountain Overlook on the Blue Ridge parkway in North Carolina. It was a pleasure to be up there in the chilly fall air, first day of October getting some new shots, and trying out the techniques with these new lenses.

Go shoot sunrise they said, it'll be amazing they said... Lemmie tell you, I officially hate sunrise. There were peoples everywhere, this one guy on a boat who saw the camera and decided he needed to be in the shot. For nearly 30 minutes just moving his boat to where ever I looked like I was shooting... .Which to be fair was mostly the little island. Absolutely annoying, then, the spot i had scouted turned out to be not spectacular. I had these crazy visions of the sun coming up right in the middle here, creating a bit of a light show, but it was off to the left, WAY off to the left. So I majorly miscalculated. Learning curve, I'll figure it out. So, before I head to bed, this is a stack of three images, so despite this being primarily long exposure, the shortest one was 1/15 the longest 8 secs.

After a heavy rain, every stream, brook, and run off can turn into a spectacular sight here in Western North Carolina. Off of 441 on the way to Clingmans Dome leaving Cherokee you will begin seeing water features along the side of the road, and if you’re lucky you may yet see something truly magical. This is a small brook most of the time, a small fall off the side of the bank to a culvert under the road. On the days leading up to this photo it rained non stop, several inches dumped down onto our mountains, until eventually it broke, and I decided to go seeking out this little features. Out of all the places I visited through the day, this one really captured my imagination, trees, roots, rocks, and a soft diffused light through the canopy.

On a rainy day in Arizona there is nothing better than going back and reviewing some old favorites to see if you can improve them with the new processing engines in Lightroom. I made this at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park outside Moab in 2019. 1/15 sec @f8 iso 160. The rising sun lights the bottom of the cliffs below and reflects on the arch for a few minutes. Special place to be when it happens.
This was a heavy lump of driftwood that had washed up on the edge of the beach, which I dragged out to this area of textured sand. Proceeded to wait for the cold to set in as the sunset at the end of the day to get my shot. Then dragged the driftwood back to where I found it. Reflections on the sandy beach was the rule for this image.

THANKS FOR VIEWING!
Standing atop the overlooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway is some of the most relaxing moments of my life. Just standing against the cool breezes, the summer winds, and those night time gusts. Listening to the sounds of birds, or oncoming storms, looking out over these vast mountain ranges. The haze capturing and painting with light, it's a joy to just sit back and watch the world turn. Sometimes you may loose yourself in a view, maybe forget to head back before the modern world has to shut down for a while... That's ok, taking a break from the day to day, the rolling freight train of life today is just what you need. Like Bob Seager once said, Roll Me Away.

So, the controlled burn the forest service was undertaking created a massive plume of smoke. I spent as much time trying to find the fires, as I tried to find a place where it would look best with the lighting. I tried doing this shot as segments, but I found in this case a Panorama was the best. I spent over an hour up here trying different compositions, but what i settled on was the full valley. This is about four miles from Devils Courthouse. I did scout some new, and interesting locations for future shots.

During my stay on the side of the road, capturing the sunset, taking in the color, breathing that fresh mountain air I slipped past Golden Hour... well past sunset... right into Blue hour. This was taken about twenty minutes after the sun had set, right around the time I was about to pack up, but I couldn't be bothered to step away from my tripod. Rarely do I get to see the sky turn such brilliant shades, so I stayed, transfixed between my camera, and this luminous sky ahead. I had to snap out of it for a moment to remember to shoot a nice panorama of the scene, to truly bring the entirety of the sky to you... Watching this sunset brought me back to my childhood, standing atop the ridge with my grandparents, mother, and other members of the family. To think, I was going to simply stay home.... No camera trickery here, no exposure bracketing... a little photo editing to bring the colors back out with the help of my color checker card, and a bit of nostalgia as I stared into the Halls of the Mountain King.

i get asked lots of basic questions by newbies to Flickr and photography about my pictures so this is for those who want to get a little more serious about photography.
it starts with a 3am alarm then i check the weather followed by a 10 minute drive and a 30 minute walk to where the picture was shot, this was my favorite spot for collecting frog spawn when i was a youngster as this is the patch i have lived in all my life (i am in my eighties) i know my way around here even in the dark, sunrise time was 4-50am so i had to be in place for 4am i popped quite a number of shots with different cameras and lens and this is the one i chose, its what i call a down and dirty picture, for all those that like to crunch numbers it was shot with a fixed lens power shot settings RAW F/3.4 ISO 160 3.8MM F.L.WB MANUAL why did i choose this shot because my daughter will probably steal it for a watercolor painting.
