For this shot, I wedged the stem of a fallen maple leaf into a ventilation grate in a remote corner of Chicago's Millennium Park. I then laid down on the grate and snapped away into the backlight with my telephoto. I was glad the grate didn't collapse since beneath it was an underground railroad yard with moving trains :)

The Western Grebe

Setting off crisp black-and-white plumage with a yellow bill and red eye, the slender Western Grebe is an elegant presence on lakes and ocean coasts of western North America. Along with its close relative, the Clark’s Grebe, it’s renowned for a ballet-like courtship display in which male and female “run” across the water in synchrony, their long necks curved in an S-shape. These water birds rarely come ashore, instead taking long dives to catch fish and other aquatic animals.

Two shots, one for the moon and another for the clouds. Moon shot @ f/7.1, Exp /1/125 sec, ISO 160.

With my new photo editing monitor and tools I've begun going back over some of my earlier shots. Editing others that at the time I didn't believe were up to snuff, finding new points of interest. It gives me new perspective on photos from before, allowing me to avoid those previous over saturation issues I was having. This is one such shot, the original shot I chose was called the Finale of the Leaves, this one is much more the colors and vibe on the day. I hope you enjoy it!

Sorry... probably shouldn’t be listening to The Beach Boys this time of year. But, when this guy hopped to the roof after snatching a fish, it was the first song that came to mind.

"Catch a Wave" is a song written by Beach Boys, Brian Wilson and Mike Love. It was released on their 1963 album, Surfer Girl.

In between several overlooks along the Blue Ridge Parkway, these huge wide open areas sit. It's sometimes difficult to get into them and see the sights. I got lucky the day I was up there, many of the annual leafers showed up a bit early and therefore left early giving far more area open to see the leaves. The haze and minimal clouds allowed for some corpuscular rays over the valley. I'm pretty sure Double Top is on the left of this image.

I visited this spot for 15 years at least, from hot summer to freezing winter seasons. In this early winter shot I was lucky to see some snow on the hillside and a few patches of cloud with sunset color. What a joy! 20211118-7K1_5467-NikB

The Coathanger is the name by which Sydneysiders affectionately refer to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This is a second zoom burst photo of the bridge when it was lit up during the Vivid Festival. It is a longer exposure and I stopped zooming during some of the exposure. I was surprised by the detail in the face and ferris wheel at Luna Park, an amusement park.

Sometimes you find yourself looking for a place to turn around, start heading home. Sometimes it's just past golden hour, and something unexpected happens. Sometimes the Light decides it's going to go nuts.

This is a re edit of a shot I took back in may of 2020, a cove off Lake Glennville, where the light began to work along the clouds and gave me one last shot for the day.

Mash Potatoes. There's a reference here, and the answer is closer than you think. It's not the same mountain of course. Not nearly as famous for certain, but the way the mountain formed reminded me so much of it I had to shoot it. I had been there for sunrise, but I wasn't as thrilled with those shots, the sky was perfectly cloudless, formless, no mood, no emotion. Flat bright light, I could of made it work, but I have learned to stop forcing things into a narrative I don't enjoy. So I hiked to one of the overlooks and shot it higher. This is Pilot Mountain North of Greensboro.

No Filters, Just some hiking and a few shots

'Last Sun' and 'First Light' is a series of photos taken on Dec. 31, 2022 and Jan. 1st, 2023.

On both days, I used a fixed camera setting to take the photos, resulting sometimes in over- or underexposure.

It is interesting how the fixed settings (aperture, exposure time and iso) reflect the mood, lightness or dimness of the respective days.

'Last Sun' was taken with a 35mm lens, iso 100, f.8 and 1/60.

'First Light' was taken with a 70-200mm lens, iso 160 (400 for the darkest shades), f.4 and 1/200.

No cropping (3x2) except occasional 4x3.

This is a telephoto of the previous image, I prefer it. Originally I thought all my landscape photography needed to be shot much wider. I find some scenes really benefits from the narrower focus. Bringing you further into the image, showing you more detail. I really do enjoy the telephoto side of photography more than I thought I would. It of course will be a learning experience to figure out when to use each lens, and where... always learning when I go out, always trying to improve every aspect of my photography, and take my viewers on a journey.

So, todays clouds were perfect, an epic sunset was going to swing through the mountains, shine light and shadows all over the ridges after some light rain. I was excited. I drive, and drive through the mountains over the Blue Ridge Parkway looking for a new place to shoot, and I happen upon these lumbering boulders on the side of the road. Occupied. Couldn't get in, but I had plenty of time before sunset. I drive down the road, sun is on the wrong side the the mountains with no overlooks.... I turn back and the place I had seen was empty, I climb up a boulder get setup, set my exposures, get a few test shots in to find my composition.... Fog rolls in. I did managed to salvage this shot before the fog reduced visibility to nothing, so I hope I did the scene some justice.

Used the Haida m10 CPL here, though it wasn't dialed in before the fog rolled over and cut the scene.

Today I wasn't sure where I wanted to take photos. I contemplated several areas along the parkway, but eventually settled on a waterfall on the backside of Devils Courthouse. The hike all the way down was easy...right up until the last tenth of a mile, dropping down the side of a ridge, very steep, and not at all friendly. I climbed down, steep stairs and setup my camera along a huge fallen tree. I tried several focal lengths, and framing, finally I settled on this composition. I was originally going to shoot this at 1/10th of a second but wanted to experiment a bit more. So here it is.
