A few more tweaks - changed lens to Nikon 50mm f1.4 but big gain has been arranging some left over York paving stones with gaps between to hide the food snippets and badger & fox nuts. This allowed longer visits to the focus area.
But a new issue has been getting a clearly focussed shot of the cubs because they dart around quickly are pretty small and their fur is very soft anyway.
But I have a limited around 500mm depth of field and have to fix the focus before each session so don't have the luxury of auto-focus.
Gazza kindly pointed this out in the previous shot the cub moved too quickly and as is a bit soft in focus.
Catch 22 is I cannot increase the shutter speed as the Yongnuo triggers for the flash are fine for 1/200 but not so good at 1/250 shutter speed, but it might be worth a try. Do not want to increase the ISO really from 1600 to 2000 but these are both options. Increasing the flash output might disturb the foxes is also not feasible.

Taken in my backyard, this was a high ISO test (1600) on my D40. Shooting insects with clear wings in sunlight can in some cases produce really nice iridescence. If you move the camera around a bit while framing the subject, you can see the colors vary in intensity, going from none at all to brilliant rainbow colors, depending upon the angle of the the sun in relation to your camera. Popping the flash doesn't diminish the level of intensity.
Here I was trying my old 200mm f/4 Micro-Nikkor, focused at infinity, with the objective salvaged from a badly damaged 75-200mm Super Albinar lens reverse mounted on the 200mm. I was shooting at f/32 after racking the ISO up to 1600, which produced a significant amount of "salt & pepper" grain and noise, which isn't present when shooting at ISO 100 to 400. By swapping to a larger bowl diffuser and using an SB20 flash instead of the SB23, I can operate at smaller apertures without having to boost the ISO. This image convinced me that running the ISO on the D40 any higher than 400 probably isn't the way to go.

Jane is in her snuggly, warm bed but I wanted a picture of her. This was the result. I'm happy to report she is back asleep in the time I took to upload this shot.

While driving around downtown Vancouver, we came across an alley that was completely filled with incredible graffiti. After about an hour of checking out hundreds of different pieces, we decided to do some skateboarding and snap a few pics.

Keen for something a bit different Steve and I headed to Wild Horse Mountain to have a crack at the Glass House Mtns.
We were greeted with overcast conditions, and I remember saying to Steve this will either be fantastic or forgettable. Rolling our eyes, we stood in the dark shivering, as the wind gusted straight up to the lookout. We have done this before in similar conditions and come away with nothing. There was a gap in the clouds somewhat above the horizon, and seven minutes after sunrise the sun peeked through, for about 30 seconds and it was gone. The peaks on the right never saw the light.

This was wide angle, to get all the objects in the shot that I wanted, 18mm (on a 18-55), so it's been pinched in photoshop to reign the distortion in. I set it at 800 for some texture, and I think having the lens way out of prime lends to the aged look, otherwise it's wysiwyg off the camera.
I cut the eyes off on the portraits oddly maybe. I plan on returning to this for another take.

The main subject in this picture is the ferry, and the background is composed of the orange color of the sky and the dark blue of the mountains (islands) on the back.i used a pretty low ISO of 100 to take this picture since i liked how the low light ambience gave emphasis to color and the peaceful elements of the picture.
