Interior of Saigonese Restaurant, at 11232 Grandview Avenue in Wheaton, MD. We had lunch there on Sunday. It was pretty good, but there was only one other person dining in there so that was a little weird.
Interior of the McKenzie House at Old Cowtown Museum. The house was built in about the 1880s and moved to Cowtown in 1961. For many years it was occupied by the Girl Scouts and known as the Kirby House. The house was reinterpreted in 2013 as a home for a single woman thus becoming the 40th exhibit building opened at Cowtown.

Description: Balnagowan Station is located on the northern side of the Pioneer River and was taken up by John Cook in 1862. Not to be confused with Balnagowan Station in the district of Port Curtis, 25km east of Rockhampton which was owned by Robert Stair Graham MacDonald.

At the Boven-Digul camp I met a local Papuan who spoke excellent English. When I told him I was heading north to find Korowai or Kombai tribes he said I was lucky to meet him, he would help me (and I was too trusting, as I can be). He prepared to leave with me to head north to Ko (or 'Kauwage' [with the Kau pron. Koh] according to google maps) where he has 'a brother' (a cousin). I'd pay for his transport. The cost of fuel for travel by speed-boat's the major expense in West Papua. He was inclined to come along he said b/c he couldn't afford the trip himself. He'd done some work with UNDP and was proud of some camera and video equipment the agency gave him which he was wanting to use north of Ko. This was taken en route to Ko. (West Papua is one of many hotbeds of intrigue, a bit like Belfast insofar as you might arouse suspicion by just walking around, or breathing. It has a profile as a place of injustice and oppression of the native Papuans by the Indonesian administration and by an element of the 'Transmigraci' Indonesian population, and I'm sure tourists and visitors are profiled for their politics [i.e. whether they give a shit about things like that.] I now think that this man was a spook, a spy.)
- We slept in Ko (or 'Kauwage') at the home of his "cousin" and then waited by the river for his brother to arrive heading further north with a longboat. (A Ko local with a speedboat gave him a price quote for a 5 or so hr. ride north and back, $1000. lol. [With a sizable kickback for my 'friend'?] So we waited for his 'brother'.) I was on a schedule with flights to catch from Merauke, etc. to Toronto for Xmas. But in Ko I was close to an interesting part of the island (although 'close' is relative) and I'd been hoping to meet some Korowai or Kombai and see their treehouses with any luck. My 'friend' said the area he wanted to take me to was very anthropological, near the end of one of the routes tourists trek along for weeks from Wamena (in the Balieem valley where Papuans wear traditional garb [for the tourists]), but he said NOBODY heads there from the south, from Tanah-Merah (probably because they're all smarter than I am). But by mid-afternoon there was still no sign of a boat heading north. We'd probably stay in Ko another night and then head back south. Then 3 guys arrived by boat to be taken a little further up to the head of a trail to Boma. These were Kombai, the first members of their tribe to ever go to high school he said, and were returning home from school to 'Uni' for the holidays (I was told by a man in Ewer that to find Kombai I should head to Ko, then Boma, then to their home at Uni [Oo-nee], a 3 day trip). I asked my 'friend' how long the trail was, he asked and was told @ 30 clicks (nope, over 50). Was it fairly level? Yes. Hmmmm. It was getting late, no boat, and I was in Papua to look around, so I said I'd like to follow along if I could. My friend spoke with these 3, they said Ok, we'd go together, my friend suddenly realized there was something he had to do back in Tanah-Merah and couldn't join us (why do I ignore bad signs like that?), I bought rice, sardines, and plenty of water, and was taken just a few clicks further in a boat to the trailhead. - This man I traveled with from Tanah-Merah to Kauwage was suffering from a horrible dental affliction which caused his teeth to go black and break apart or wear down to stubs. He said he was told or suspected that the cause was that he helped dig a new grave in a cemetery but didn't wash his hands afterwards in a banana peel like he was supposed to do (a traditional ritual). Sadly, his condition is pretty common both here and in Nagaland in India www.flickr.com/photos/97924400@N00/6284897879/ and which results from chewing Betel nut, a narcotic, with powdered or 'slaked' lime, very popular in West Papua. (According to the BBC, it's used by close to 10% of the world's population, and it's the 4th most commonly used psychoactive substance after caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine. So it beats out qat in Yemen and Somaliland. www.bbc.com/news/health-31921207 )

Interior Design Shoot - The objective of the shoot was to capture how the arrangement of the objects worked together in each space to create an interior design. I used lights but balanced this with the existing interior light plus the exterior light to create as natural but fully lit scene as possible in each shot.

someone recently, I can't remember who, expressed an interest in seeing my boat Mouette's interior -- well, here it is, while sailing yesterday, with late-afternoon sun making the mahogany glow...
the yellow bag on the left is the brand-new sail -- and a friend built the storage bins on each side for me this spring, there used to be just cushions & not enough storage space... the rectangular thing on the bulkhead, just behind the sail, is a folding table, with a 1961 chart of the San Francisco Bay varnished to its top -- behind it is a Tina Modotti poster. behind the bulkhead is a small hanging locker on the right, the head is on the left -- and the v-berth up front is where I sleep.
