Here's a close approximation of what the interior of the camp huts looked like at Valley Forge. Bedding would have been set up on the wooden framework to the right and left, providing space for about 12 bunks. There wouldn't have been much in the way of blankets, though, as most of the soldiers didn't have any. They would have spent the cold winter days hoping to get whatever warmth they could from huddling together. When they could, they'd eat cakes made from a paste of flour and water. On rare occasions, they might have the luxury of a soup made of broth and tripe. They tried to stay dry, but it was a damp winter, and disease festered in the mold. Typhoid, small pox, pneumonia, dysentery, all were common in these cabins.
But as bad as things were in Valley Forge, this is also where things started turning around. Washington had been begging the Continental Congress for funding for months, but a Congressman typically finds raising an army a lot more fun than raising a tax to pay for an army. The whole fight had started from people not wanting to pay taxes to fund an army in the first place. But in late January, five members of the Continental Congress made a visit to Valley Forge, and Washington showed them first-hand the condition of the army the Congress was hoping would reclaim Philadelphia. After that, the distribution of supplies was rejiggered, and somebody found some money so that by the middle of February, supplies were flowing into the camp.

My friend Cristina Hadzi is an interior designer. Each year she sends out an example of her work as a christmas card to her clients and this year we collaborated with her on this project.
The chair and table were in the living room of one of her clients who was gracious enough to let us photograph there. The room was high up overlooking the Hudson River in Manhattan with light coming in from three sides. The direct light from the west facing windows was pure skylight, but then bounced around the walls and carpet and provided a perfect warm fill light to subtly contrast the cool direct light.
We moved the table and dressed it with flowers. Cristina was quite pleased with the results and this photo was used for her card

Publix may be all over the Richmond area, but in Hampton Roads they still just have this one location in Williamsburg (and the Outer Banks has a location too, if you wanna include them). I guess with Food Lion and Kroger dominating the region they don't feel the need to aggressively expand, though they have stated that new Suffolk and Norfolk locations may open this year. For now though Williamsburg is it! I don't think I've been in this store since their opening day in October 2018, and I wanted to come back and get some cleaner shots than what I took during that busy time. The store has changed very little since then, still using the same warm color scheme and simple department signage. Things that I noticed have changed include the addition of the mobile ordering station in this entryway and the removal of the coffee café and a "Publix Aprons Simple Meals" kiosk next to produce- all most likely COVID-era things.
