The promontory.

Back at the Lower Falls footbridge. I have taken many photographs of this promontory jutting out into the Genesee River, maybe even enough for a kaleidoscope.

Several weeks ago at Letchworth State Park. Walked down to the Lower Falls footbridge then up and around on the loop on the east side. It was a bit breezy and the sun was in and out.

Hollandrad = German for Dutch bicycle, or what the Dutch use to call Omafiets. This sounds like Granny-bike in an other language.

Recognizable by the bend in the frame and the firm handlebar. People tend to sit up straight on this bicycle, facing the heavy headwinds.

Another day, another hike. I followed the Letchworth east rim trail past the Middle and Upper Falls. Just upriver from the Upper Falls is railroad bridge across the gorge. This portion of the rim trail is part of the Letchworth branch of the Finger Lakes Trail that runs east-west across upstate New York.

A significant chunk of the east rim trail between where I started on the park road and the railroad bridge was lost some decades ago when that part of the gorge wall collapsed into the valley below. The unofficial detour winds up and around the collapse area until it can pick up the old route a few hundred yards before the bridge. It can be tricky walking with a pack. The newer and official FLT detour follows the park round, a gravel public road, and a gravel and old dirt road until it can rejoin the original trail. From there one can continue southbound or backtrack along the rim trail to the railroad bridge. This detour avoids the nasty highway roadwalk followed by an earlier official detour.

I followed the unofficial detour south past the bridge then back up and around along the rerouted official detour. The public road begins where the detour crosses the railroad east of the bridge. Photographs were called for.

Milady and I were at Letchworth State Park last Friday. We hiked on of the trails from the Nature Center. The trails there are less demanding and gentler on her hips.

We found these old steps by Trout Pond. There wasn't anything above other than an open space where one could sit on a mat and let the mind rest, perhaps on this view.

SP-ultra 4LF film Developer works great on 35mm as well. HP5 developed for 8 minutes, shot a box speed.

Pictober day 10 - Morning

You know those mornings when you step outside and you can't see your hand in front of your face? Aviation and weather-reporting folks have a name for that. W0X0F - indefinite ceiling zero, sky obscured, visibility 0 in fog.

It is pronounced "woxxoff", as if the zeroes were Os. No flying out of here this morning, and certainly no getting back in safely.

We'll call this an accidental abstract. It really was intended to be a couple photographs, but the winding got really balky on my Ondu 135 and I managed to overlap shots and, I think, mangle the emulsion on the film. This is what I got when I scanned the negatives.

I think this is the last of my Appalachian Trail photographs. It feels strange to be back home after being so immersed in the trail. I miss it.

Brother Chuck (aka Bilbo) and I drove from Fayetteville to Above the Clouds Hostel on Monday, March 7. From there Lucky (not the Lucky1 in this photograph) shuttled us to the Springer Mountain parking lot. We hit the trail about 2:00. Given the mid-afternoon start, we were only planning to go to the Stover Creek Shelter, less than two miles north.

We arrived at the shelter about 3:15, before the heavy rain moved in. There was still plenty of room. We set up in the loft and watched the deluge move through. After the rain, the stoves came out and dinner was served. The dedicated fire sitters got the fire going again. We slept warm and dry in the shelter, though I did put my puffy on sometime during the night.

I enjoyed the Stover Creek Shelter. The roof over the picnic tables was wonderful.

I plan to see this place again.

(It appears that my Cinestill developer had had too many rolls of film developed with it. Both this and the previous roll were significantly under-developed. Cinestill one-step developer has its advantages, but I plan to go back to my Kodak D76.)

I had my two-year followup appointment for my 2019 back surgery. The surgeon said the x-rays looked exactly the way he wanted. Clean bill of health.

I stepped out into the parking lot. It was a beautiful day.

First roll of film produced a mixed bag as I learn how the camera exposes, but I did like this one where I used a Sekonic light meter. I also bought a Kaiser FilmCopy stand and Negative Lab Pro on the weekend so I could take control of my own scans. Surprising how much was missed off from the lab scans. Can't see much difference with a macro set up, but I certainly have more control over my process now.

We got down to Stony Brook State Park last month. The gorge trail was still closed off. I walked up(!) and along the east rim trail.

There are two sets of abandoned railroad bridge piers and footings, the old ones of concrete and the really old ones of cut stone.

A southeast extension of Letchworth follows the path of the old Genesee Valley Canal. This series of small locks was abandoned close to 150 years ago and was replaced by a railroad line.

Friday, June 3 I hiked the Letchworth State Park trail 1 along the west side of the Genesee River gorge end-to-end with a loop back. It was a beautiful day for hiking - a few clouds and high about 75F. I took lots of photographs with the Olympus OM2 and Ilford HP5. Gaia GPS said 15.1 miles for the entire trip, which makes me think trail 1 is longer than the published 7 miles.

I followed the east rim trail south to the railroad bridge over the gorge.

For this photograph I put the light meter away and simply set the Argus to f/16 and 1/350, which is as tight and fast as it will go. I was shooting with a yellow filter which cut the effective ASA to about 200.

February 20 according to my Instagram posts. I parked at the east side Hogsback overlook at Letchworth, hiked north on the Finger Lakes Trail to the Mount Morris Dam, then back past the car and south until I decided it was time to turn around and head home.

I was in the upper 20s F, so not overly cold except that the west wind was howling across the gorge. I was happy for the snowshoes; in some places I was breaking trail in both direction and the blowing snow covered over my tracks.

I have not shot with the Holga for a couple years. I had forgotten how much fun the miserable thing is.

For our anniversary a month ago, we decided to check out some brews and wines west of Rochester. We ended the day with dinner and a brew at Stoneyard Brewing Company in Brockport, New York. One could get there via the Barge Canal if one so desired. stoneyardbrewingcompany.com/

There is a lift bridge over the canal. We watched it go up to let a boat through and back down to reconnect the highway.

This is the horizontal complement to a vertical I posted some time back. I like this one, too.

The powerline trail is pretty enough, and has a good overlook at the end. Mostly easy walking. The trail meanders back and forth along the powerline right-of-way from River Road to the east rim.right-of-way from River Road to the east rim.

I stopped by one of my old haunts in Ellison Park on the way back from church a week or so ago. In times of higher water I have both launched and recovered canoes at this landing on Irondequoit Creek. The creek meanders through the park on its way to Irondequoit Bay further north.
