Why do I keep taking pictures of places I have photographed before?

Because they are never quite the same.

The Finger Lakes Trail fingerlakestrail.org/ runs east-west through the southern Finger Lakes region in New York. The Letchworth branch of about 23 miles runs north-south along the east side of the gorge. The north end of the branch enters the park from the highway just west of the river, quickly crossing to the east side via a foot bridge. I did an up-and-back hike a week ago from the little dam to the big dam.

Two weeks ago in Durand Eastman Park on a beautiful day. I was clearly not the first to pass this way.

I parked by the start of the yellow ski trail, followed it all the way around then down the west side of Durand Lake and over the ridge to the start of the Eastman Lake trail. I followed it along the east side of Eastman Lake then back along the west side to return to the car in the deepening dusk.

A few days before Labor Day I walked down to the Irondequoit Bay outlet. We had high clouds and bright sun. The Irondequoit Bay Marine Park begins near the top of the hill and stretches from the highway right-of-way on the left across to the treeline on the right and down to the bay. I was in the mood for taking pictures.

I shorted the development time by a minute to keep from blowing out the highlights.

This was the last frame on the previous roll. I loaded another and shot most of it.

My son @Spielorjh plays Tuesday Tunes with an Irish group at one Irish tavern and sometimes elsewhere. This was a Sunday afternoon at Johnny's Irish Pub. Lanse played his banjo while one of his cohorts was on the hammered dulcimer. I could listen to them for hours.

Just upriver from the Mount Morris flood control dam. This area is in a constant state of cleanup. In the lower right you can see the log boom that stretches across the valley. Especially during spring melt-off it catches a lot of the fallen trees and other debris that gets swept down the river.

Milady dropped me off at the dam overlook then drove down to Hogsback to read a book.

Another day, another hike. I followed the Letchworth east rim trail past the Middle and Upper Falls. On the other side of the gorge the park road crosses a stream just before the Middle Falls area.

I was rather pushing the limits of what could be done with a hand-held shot.

I took this photograph from the Tea Table area, looking across the Wolf Creek valley to the opposite overlook.

Friday, June 3 I hiked the Letchworth State Park trail 1 along the west side of the Genesee River gorge end-to-end with a loop back. It was a beautiful day for hiking - a few clouds and high about 75F. I took lots of photographs with the Olympus OM2 and Ilford HP5. Gaia GPS said 15.1 miles for the entire trip, which makes me think trail 1 is longer than the published 7 miles. See the map trace below.

After walking down to the Saint Helena bridge site in Letchworth State Park from the west side, I decided I needed to do the same from the east. The east trail begins by following the abandoned Saint Helena road but due to washouts and hillier terrain soon has to find its own way.

Thanks to recent trail maintenance by the Friends of Letchworth, it is possible to get both to the east bridge pier (where I am standing) and the bed of the river (where they are standing). Last shot on the roll.

February 26. I stopped at Heroes Brewing Company for a brew and a book (bring your own book). This delightful crew was having a grand time taking pictures of themselves with their phones. I put on my mask, wandered over and asked if they would like a shot of the whole group. I ended up taking several on a couple or three of their phones. Karen posted one on Instagram.

I had the Yashica-D with me. Of course had to show it to them. They loved it. And, of course, I had to use it to take a photograph of them. Given the low light and 400 speed film and no tripod, I had to open the aperture wide. I couldn't get the whole crew in focus, but I did get Karen.

Then he put the camera away.

The re-opened trail meets the park road a good way north of where I was parked. The road-walk took me past a bog.

There is a pull-off at the head of the trail along the east rim and down to the Lower Falls footbridge. I followed the trail down to and across the footbridge, up and around the short loop on the west rim, then back down and up the car.
