I ordered this lens before Christmas, intending to have the choice between a moderate wide and a short telephoto from the very start of my 365 Project, but the eight-week delay in its arrival meant that all of January and the first half of February ended up being a one-camera-one-lens challenge – worthwhile, I’m sure, but not what I wanted.
Still, it’s here now, and to list each item in the entire fucking catalogue of staggering incompetence and breathtaking negligence that caused such a delay would seem churlish, wouldn’t it? (I thank them for getting it to me eventually, of course, but I’d still really struggle to recommend... the company in question.)

This’ll probably be gone by tomorrow. And since you never know if you’re going to get any more, it’d be a shame to waste the opportunity to photograph what’s left, even in this state. But then, snow can’t only ever be fresh and pure.

One month in lockdown. I’ve been working shifts for thirteen years, so preparing lunch whilst watching dawn break over the garden isn’t really that remarkable.
(New challenges require new approaches: for the duration of my time off work, and with my horizons severely limited, I’ve decided to experiment with shooting and presenting pairs of images, instead of the usual single frames. The results might not turn out to be anything special, but there’s got to be something worthwhile in the process.)

Seen over somebody’s front wall, a decorative winter scene comprising several quaint ornaments and vast quantities of cotton wool, along with an old Christmas tree which seems to be shedding both needles and tinsel. I’m sure it was once a charming display, but now it’s definitely looking past its best.

Fire station with half moon.
A weak composition, in which none of the key elements align satisfactorily, but I was anxious not to lose the setting moon, nor to gain much more daylight. In the moment, the clear sky, the crisp morning air and the half moon combined to give a magical feeling, and yet this rushed picture does no justice to the experience. A real shame.

Rudolph the No-Nosed Reindeer. I found a squished berry on the pavement immediately in front of him, but if this used to be his sniffer there was no way of telling whether it was deliberately plucked out by a passing vandal or merely fell off as he started to melt.

After yesterday’s reminder that foreign travel won’t be a thing again for the next who-knows-how-long, maybe it’s time I started actually celebrating my home town, instead of just feeling like I’m stuck here because of the pandemic.
I’d already been meaning to photograph this sign for ages anyway, but then it turned out that today would’ve been Alan Sillitoe’s birthday, so...

This is a portrait of my Wife that I took on a See Saw in our local park. This is the first proper portrait that I have tried to take with one of my film cameras and I'm pretty pleased with it, but I am highly bias!

In other news, our television is apparently so infrequently used that I had to retune all the channels before I could actually receive the broadcast.

A response to the art of a friend.
Taken during a visit to Grace Eden’s Glowing Older, a commission from The Renewal Trust, during its exhibition at St Peter’s Church. The models are for the most part local people in their sixties, seventies and eighties, photographed in locations significant to their everyday lives, often with props and/or costumes with a personal resonance, and the resulting portraits are presented in a style reminiscent of the pre-Raphaelite painters, with the intention of celebrating the often-overlooked beauty of the ageing process.
It amused me that the exhibition space itself should happen to reflect some of the themes of the commission: in the stained glass windows can be seen the words, “Remember the dead. Fight for the living.” Or could be, had the too-great contrast between the dim church interior and the bright sky outside not resulted in an area of negative so dense as to scarcely hold any burnable detail... and just where I needed it! Ho-hum.

Listen, I know that Boris is advising us not to look for ways to bend the current rules, but if you really want to meet a friend for a coffee and a chat INDOORS then you CAN do so LEGALLY by booking yourselves contemporaneous appointments to give blood at your local Donor Centre, which is classed as essential travel, and is permitted as often as once every three months.
Fuck the system, give blood.
